EDUCATION: Raised in Brooklyn - one of the epicentres of the initial outbreak - and formally educated until the age of approximately 8 years old, when the city collapsed. Everything else was learned from his older sister, and then from the others in the laboratory.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

RELIGION: Shows hints of being Christian. It is unknown as to whether he actually is or not, or if this is the belief he held prior to becoming an experiment (and he just remembers brief parts of it).

NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS: Actually shockingly stable, for a member of the Five. He has noted PTSD, but doesn’t seem to have been afflicted with anything else.

SCARS: Like the others, a lot. His most known is an injury to his right ear, that took a small chunk out of the tip of the shell - making him look almost like a reverse elf, in a way.

FATHER: His name is not recorded, but his files state that his father was a scientist at the time of the initial outbreak - making Caballo a nepo baby in the worst possible way. His father is recorded as having died in 3077.

MOTHER: Unknown (more than likely deceased)

SIBLINGS: Two sisters are recorded, but their names are not. An older sister, born in 3060 and died in 3083 as one of the Nameless Ones; and a younger sister born in 3070, with no date of death on record. She is presumed deceased.

SIGNIFICANT OTHER(S): Lux / Number 11 (boyfriend)

CHILDREN: None (that he or I am aware of)

PREDOMINANT PERSONALITY TRAITS

- Like the other members of the Eighteen, he was abducted from his home by the government, forced to become an experiment, survived and was forced to become a government assassin, at some point losing his memory along the way. He seems to have handled it better than the rest, being remarkably stable in comparison. He of course still has his moments, but is on the whole more capable of dealing with everything than most of the others are.

- He is responsible for the rebellion and the Five’s freedom. Having a spirit described as free and rebellious as a wild stallion - with the speed to match - he was more inclined to finally attempt freedom, rather than accepting his fate and dying alongside the other thirteen fallen. It is believed that the death of Greyhound / Number 2 was the catalyst to his decision to start working on a plan of escape.

- He is actually one of the younger members of the Eighteen - his birth year was mistakenly originally recorded as 3055, which made him one of the oldest. While the error was rectified, his number was not, but the members were informed by the scientists - and Alastor (the actual oldest of the Five) is their de-facto leader, as opposed to Caballo.

- Like Ignacio, he is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico. However, if they have ever met, Caballo does not remember it - though, intriguingly, Ignacio refused to kill him during their only meeting in the Badlands.

- Caballo is less inclined towards physical violence than the others, making him a target to some factions in the Coldlands, as he is seen as an easy victory. This lower inclination doesn’t mean he isn’t at all inclined, however, and he is certainly capable of holding his own when he needs to. He has ‘liberated’ several faction members of supplies through their mistaken perception of him as weak.

- While his loyalty can occasionally be questionable, as he is the most morally grey member of the Five, he is firmly loyal to Lux, and has ensured that none of his stupid decisions have ever fallen back on his beloved. This genuine love and sincere attempt at protection have become the envy of the scientists still in the laboratory.

If this means nothin’, so be it. But ya can’t say I didn’t try.

OTHER NOTES

INTERESTS: He’s fascinated by plants. He has entire notebooks on observations of plants and different plant life / plant matter. It may have helped keep him grounded in the laboratory, and helped him to suffer less negative consequences as a result.

HOBBIES: He spends most of his time reading. If not reading, or running to nowhere, he can sometimes be found attempting to grow some small plants in small pots looted from various places.

SKILLS: His nickname, Caballo (meaning ‘horse’), comes from his almost concerning speed. He is capable of an unnerving level of speed and endurance over short periods of time, and can keep a relatively fast pace for a prolonged period of time - though doing the latter will exhaust him far quicker.

SLEEPING HABITS: Either just straight-up passes out somewhere, or actually sleeps at a normal time, like a normal person. There is no in-between.

GENDER: Debatable. AMAB, but thanks to his time as a government experiment, it has resulted in a disconnected sense of identity - so he isn’t really sure how he identifies.

PRONOUNS: He / she / they / ze / xe / it / any you’d like. Anything goes. Just don’t call him late for dinner. (‘he’ is used here for ease of recording information)

SEXUALITY: Lord knows. Among other confused parts of his identity are his sexuality, which may take him a while to properly understand.

RESIDENCY: The Coldlands (the completely lawless and mostly destroyed parts of the United States of America, almost specifically in the North. They are opposed by the Badlands to the South)

BIRTHPLACE: His records say Baton Rouge (Louisiana, USA), but he sounds like he walked out of Pennsylvania (USA).

EDUCATION: Completed all education up to 11 years old, at which point the virus broke out and it became very much a guessing game as to when society would fall and he would be forced out of education. He dropped out aged 16, having held out longer than most before calling it quits.

SCARS: A good few, but his most known are the thin line running down the bottom of his right cheekbone (seeming to follow the bone), the small cut to the left side of his upper lip, and a small line running through the left side of his hairline, into his forehead. His right thumb pad has a line running through the brunt of it, invalidating his fingerprint. Of these scars, he already had the one on his hairline before becoming an experiment.

FATHER: A ‘William Montserrat’ was found in his files, but no date of birth or viable link to Alastor could be identified. It’s possible this is Alastor himself. His father is presumed deceased.

SIGNIFICANT OTHER(S): N / A - though he does seem to vaguely remember someone from before he became an experiment. This may be a significant other, a sibling, a parent, a friend or even a child, though the other members of the Five believe them to have been a significant other. They are presumed deceased.

PREDOMINANT PERSONALITY TRAITS

- Like the other members of the Eighteen, Alastor was abducted from his home, forced into a shady government drug experimentation programme, survived, and was forced to become a government assassin. Years under this abusive imprisonment have damaged his psyche, along with that of the other members of the Five, hardening him and causing emotional disregulation issues - alongside a disconnected and disorientated sense of identity.

- Like the other members of the Five, Alastor’s memory was wiped at some point in the laboratory. This is believed to be a side-effect of surviving the experiments. Not remembering anything has damaged his sense of environment and understanding, causing severe confusion and undue stress in the early stages of his forced assassin days.

- Alastor is responsible for the execution of Proxy, one of the Five’s former bosses. He shot her after realising she intended on killing the remaining members of the Eighteen (twelve of them were still alive at the time) in order to prevent an uprising, and to tie up any loose ends. Hadrian / Number 1 was the only one slain by Proxy before her execution, and Alastor still feels responsible for his death.

- Due to surviving a bullet wound to the shoulder that did not correctly heal, he has been left with chronic pain and wears a shoulder brace to lessen it - which has only served to make him grumpier.

- Despite his evident anger and emotional volatility, he is the de-facto leader of the Five, and frequently disassociates out of sheer stress. He’s notably terrified when he comes back to himself, but will never admit it, for fear of causing stress amongst the others. He acts as their guardian, taking most of the weight so that they don’t have to.

- The way he cares about the others proves that he does have a heart, and that ultimately he is a good man, but has lost most of his sense of identity over the years and cannot remember his gentler nature.

Mercy doesn’t find people like us. We killed it a long time ago.

OTHER NOTES

INTERESTS: Like Lux / Number 11, he seems to have a fascination with the night sky. It may well be something he finds calming, trying to pick out the constellations and remember their names for next time. He has occasionally been known to try and follow the North Star to a new safehouse.

HOBBIES: Stargazing, mostly. Very rarely, he’ll take up reading a book, or painting something using only the pads of his thumbs.

SKILLS: Alastor possesses extremely fast reflexes - on occasion appearing to look instant - and has not been known to tremble when holding a weapon. He can also hold his breath for up to seven minutes, or up to three if suffering with an illness affecting his lungs.

SLEEPING HABITS: He is constantly sleep-deprived from the unwillingness to sleep - because when he sleeps, he is plagued with nightmares. He’s taken to randomly passing out whenever he isn’t immediately needed (or required to be alert and conscious), to try and prevent the nightmares. If his conscious brain is too tired to think, surely his unconscious one must be the same, no?

EDUCATION: Formally educated in school from the age of 5 to 11, when society collapsed in 3075. His parents managed to homeschool him until he turned 14, and he picked the rest up from there. While it isn’t known what became of his parents, it’s assumed they either succumbed to the virus or became members of the Nameless Ones.

NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS: Some sort of paranoid disorder, PTSD, and general distrust of most people outside of the Five.

SCARS: Several, but his most-known scar is the ‘cracked glass’ scar on the right side of his jawbone, at the back, right (ha) as it curves up towards his ear. He received this scar after being shot by Bliss (who was then executed by Pliny / Number 18), the Five’s former boss. He narrowly survived this ordeal, though Caballo merely just tells him that it makes him look more distinguished - something he frequently refutes.

PREDOMINANT PERSONALITY TRAITS

- Having been abducted from his home in Southampton, forced into a shady government drug experiment programme, had his memory wiped and then forced to become a government assassin, he’s understandably extremely wary of most people outside of the Five.

- Lux is one of eighteen survivors of the drug experiments that produced the ‘Faceless Ones’, and only one of five survivors of the government assassins (who those eighteen survivors became). As a result, he is extremely paranoid, and very lonely.

- Since escaping the laboratory, he has had time to think, and has come to the unpleasant realisation that most of what they’d all endured was not done willingly - in other words, that they had been stripped of their autonomy and forced to obey to survive.

- Lux is responsible for the mercy-killing of the infected Ronin / Number 15, ending his suffering after he began displaying virus symptoms. While it was a compassionate act and something Ronin had asked for, he still feels guilty and horrified that he had killed a fellow member of the Eighteen.

- He’s understandably extremely angry about everything they all endured, but, like Pliny, his exhaustion overrides his anger, and he just wants peace. He’s too tired to really continue fighting.

- While he may have forgotten almost everything he’s ever known, and everyone he’s ever loved, he very clearly holds a deep respect and love for Caballo. The two are eachothers’ greatest comforts, and first ports of call after anything. Lux’s genuine love and commitment to his fellow Five member is something envied by many scientists trying to track them back down - having seen it when they were still in the laboratory.

They stole my life from me. Like hell am I letting them have any more of it.

INTERESTS: He seems fascinated by things like rockpools, the stars, and things frozen in ice. His name, Lux, was given to him by fallen fellow survivor Trixie / Number 5, who said his bright silver hair reminded her of a star - leading to his fledgling interest and then fascination with the night sky.

HOBBIES: Stargazing is one of his greatest loves.

SKILLS: A highly-trained government assassin, he is a skilled marksman, with a concerning degree of stealth and evasion, and has survived numerous attempts by his former bosses to kill him.

EDUCATION: Educated primarily in San Juan (Puerto Rico), before attending university in Detroit (Michigan, US). He graduated with a 2:1 degree in Political Sciences.

PREDOMINANT PERSONALITY TRAITS

- He’s a hardened, jaded old man, having lost both parents to the outbreak, his only sibling to government drug experiments resulting in ‘the Faceless Ones’, and his wife to the virus after over a decade since the outbreak. Those kinds of losses change a person, sometimes irreparably.

- He’s quite blunt. If you’re an outsider and you’re about to get screwed over by a rival faction, he’ll let you know. He’ll also question why the hell you’re even in the Badlands, and he won’t make any move to save you. If you’re a mercenary, politician, or government-affiliated, you’re already as good as dead.

- While he may be cynical, jaded, and at times quite cruel, he will do his best for the members of his faction - he ensures supplies are relatively evenly distributed, that injuries are seen to (if possible), hunger is dealt with (if possible), and thirst does not go unquenched (if possible).

- He is a former US civil servant, but turned on the government and many of its workers after all assistance was refused to the areas worst-hit by the outbreak. Watching the country unnecessarily crumble radicalised him against the government he once served, and now government officials (or affiliates) have become targets.

- If you’re an outsider and you stumble across his faction during an ill-advised trip to the Badlands (or maybe you got lost on the way out of Dodge), and you’re not government-affiliated or a mercenary, there’s a chance he’ll have mercy on you and welcome you into his faction. Be prepared to run for your life.

- He’ll gladly entertain the prospect of bartering and trading with outsiders, but won’t take kindly to them trying to steal his supplies or scam the faction. Years of survival in a near-wasteland have wisened him against greediness and stupidity, and those trying to pull a fast one on him are likely to receive a bullet between the eyes instead.

INTERESTS: Not dying. He has a fairly impressive array of books looted from various buildings and people, which he reads from time to time when he’s particularly bored. He’s currently halfway through a 2019 print of The Odyssey.

HOBBIES: Sometimes he’ll entertain the idea of kicking a ball around, if there’s no real threat about.

SKILLS: Expert marksman, well-versed in law and politics, fairly manipulative, and can smell a threat from a mile away. There’s a saying that you can’t shit a shitter, and Ignacio will certainly catch someone out if they try.
