I wanna make another post later to fully articulate how... busy, chaotic, these past few months have been, but right now I'm gonna tell you about Mulch.

So sometimes, I do paid chores and errands for first- and secondhand family, right? Well, this one household's out on the edge of town, and Thursday, I was bringing in bags when I heard these tiny beeps I'd recognize anywhere after years spent in the countryside being chosen by strays and living with parents who never spayed anything.

After some investigation, I found him. The size of an avocado, the age of a radish.

He stopped crying his sad little head off as soon as I picked him up.

Reluctant mothers are known to reject kittens or whole litters, but given that he looked to be about a month old and none of us found any littermates, my guess is that his assumed they're fine to leave behind as soon as they're weaned. Cats have examples of good and bad parenting just like humans.

Anyway, after I gave him a preliminary decontamination bath, I took him to secondhand family's usual clinic to treat him for The Outdoor Orphan Special: fleas, worms, and calicivirus– having lived with parents who'd never keep our cats inside, I was familiar with what makes their eyes so congested, and how they can infect each other back-and-forth indefinitely until kept in quarantine.

QP Wife and I aren't ready for another, but I knew that household wouldn't be able to follow his treatment protocol– they're seniors, and all the cats on their property are habituated strays– so he's staying in our bathroom, closed off from our cats, until he's stable enough and big enough for one of our local friends to take custody.

Two days later, with medication, he already has clear eyes, alertness, and a playful personality.

His first contact with humans could've been two days ago and he already falls asleep when we hold or swaddle him...

...I think he'll make a full recovery.

Edit: I lied. The friend we were gonna adopt him out to was having doubts, and QP Wife got attached.

Guess we have five cats now.

im procrastinating on artfight prep so while my new character stares into my soul from the other monitor- STORIES LOCATIONS WITH MULTIPLE CULTURES BUT A SINGLE COMMON LANGUAGE ARE FINE. BUT I WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE THE CONCEPT OF CULTURES WITH SECONDARY LANGUAGES ON TOP OF THE COMMON ONE. Give me unmatching idioms that don't translate well in common, give me puns that only work in one language (or maybe two or three but not the common one), give me little verbal phrases that are country specific, give me cultural differences, give me characters who only speak their native language and not the common one. Give me people trying to learn each other's languages as a method of more easily understanding and communicating with them. Give me people in one area talking smack about a foreigner in the local language. Bonus points, give me the foreigner turning around and responding in the local language.

Okay; this is a thing I've wanted to write about for some time! It's a concept I came up with. At some point.

Magic mixture...!!!

The main idea of it it's that it's a phenomenon in-verse where, if two or more monsters spend enough time together, their magic eventually mix, so both their color palettes get altered. Temporally! But altered.

It usually looks kind of subtle?? For skeletons, I imagine the main difference is the color of blush, eyelights and tongue, which are the most visible. The color palette change usually fades in some hours, if both monsters stop interacting and/or staying close to each other.

I imagine the magic mix as a whole is. Very common. Friend groups usually end up somewhat rainbowy if they're very close, those who magic-fight for fun are usually very color-palette altered anddd. Healing magic usually leads to unilateral color mixing, where one of the monsters is the only one whose palette is affected.

I imagine it. Also gets affected by Magic Power?? Its harder to "tint" a boss monster as a normal monster, while a boss monster has less difficulties making their color mixing visible in friends. And stuff

There are moments where it's Not as subtle™, which is when the monster in particular uses. Active Magic to cover themselves, like moldsmalls or fire monsters.

It’s interesting how diseases rip through schools at incredible speeds despite being in an arguably modern, clean(ish) environment. I wonder if it has something to do with the whole “you need a doctor’s note to excuse your absence of even one day” combined with the average price of going to a doctor, the lack of education on things like “you’re still contagious even after the fever goes away”, and the overwhelming message of “if you don’t struggle through it, you’re a failure!”

Let's talk about Toriel.

Toriel is a grown woman, a mother of two. She teaches kindergarten at the local school, and volunteers at the local church as part of the choir. She is recently divorced. Her oldest child has recently gone off to college, and her youngest is:

Adopted from a young age

A different species

Known for pulling pranks and otherwise causing trouble, sometimes to great expense (e.g. bath bombs in the toilet)

Despite this, Toriel loves her youngest child as though they were her biological child. She checked out a "how to care for humans" book many, many times over the course of parenting Kris. She drives them to school each day, makes sure they're fed and cared for, and is clearly invested in their social life given how excited she is to learn that they've made a friend. As a newly single mother, she's doing her best.

But let's talk about her being newly single, shall we? She recently divorced her husband, Asgore. Unfortunately, Asgore has not accepted this. Toriel is being stalked by her ex-husband; he keeps giving her unwanted bouquets of flowers, and showing up wherever she goes. He even lampshades this, as though it's funny, when he pops out from hiding in the bushes near the church, after knowing that she would be there. Every time he does this, Toriel responds with obvious discomfort and anxiety, and makes an excuse to get away as quickly as she can. Asgore's behavior seems goofy and "well-meaning," but he is clearly ignoring his ex-wife's boundaries and actively disrupting her living her life by showing up where he knows she'll be, uninvited and unwanted.

So Toriel is recently divorced, with one child off to college, and another child who is clearly not doing well (despite Toriel's best efforts) still at home. She is being stalked by her ex-husband, but in such a way that it comes across as "friendly" or "kind" to everyone else, meaning she can't really make a big fuss about it or she'll look like the bad guy.

Then a new guy moves to town. He's friendly, he's funny, and they hit it off immediately. And unlike everyone else in town, this is a friend that doesn't have a connection to Asgore. (Rudy was Asgore's friend first, after all; it's not as if Toriel can really open up to him about how much his best friend is really putting the ass in Asgore.) This is someone that she can open up to, someone that she can confide in, someone that she can let a little loose with. Because she can't let loose at school, around the children; she can't let loose at church, in front of the wider community; but with a friend, in her own home?

And Sans is non-judgmental. Sans likes her jokes. As mentioned, Sans doesn't know Asgore, so he's not going to be inclined to brush off Toriel's concerns or discomfort because "well he just really loves you" or "he's just being kind." (Not to mention, Asgore also trauma dumped to Sans a bit, making Sans visibly uncomfortable as well, so Sans might even be more inclined to hear Toriel's side.) Sans knows about responsibility, given that this version of Papyrus seems to have issues of his own, and therefore perhaps Sans can relate with Toriel on how it is taking care of someone when you love them, but you don't exactly know how best to help them. Finally, Toriel has someone in her corner, someone who can understand, who she can have fun with.

Toriel isn't one of the main characters, and she's a grown woman and a mother (figure) at that, so I feel like it's easy to dismiss her side of things. Was it great that she was drunk when Kris came home, or that she and Sans continued partying even after Kris tried going to bed? No. But Toriel is a person, a whole entire person with a life outside of being Kris' mother. She's allowed to not always be on her best behavior, and she's allowed to make and spend time with a new friend when she, too, is pretty isolated as a result of her divorce and clearly stressed with the fact that Asgore is stalking her. ("Trying to win her back" is not, it turns out, an excuse for stalker behavior.) Toriel even tells Kris that the house feels lonely now that it's just the two of them, meaning that she, too, has been plagued with loneliness just like the main cast, and that Sans is, perhaps, her Susie.

Toriel is not an awful, uncaring mother because she got a little silly drunk with the first friend that is truly hers since her divorce. She's just a person. And she's allowed to be a person.
