Many people know about Cabrini-Green outside of Chicago, but the Robert Taylor Homes were a massive stretch of high rises along the State Street Corridor from 39th - 54th Streets. Densely packed, the housing project held around 27,000 families in 4349 units at its height in 1965. “Verge” is the tale of Shakerleg, a disenchanted New York City subway drummer with a unique style, who is discovered by two gifted and comedically charismatic Aussie brothers to form the rock trio, “The Kin.” Documenting Shakerleg’s rise from an out of work actor, to a subway musician, to becoming the drummer for “The Kin, and landing a deal with Interscope Records; “Verge” takes an irreverent look at a band forming and “breaking” in the cut throat music industry - all seen through Shakerleg’s humorously jaded and sardonic point-of-view.

Barbara Moore, public housing activist, mother and dear friend to many, passed away yesterday surrounded by her family. We will miss Ms. Moore's kindness and humor, but we will miss her generous, yet willful spirit the most. Chicago will miss you. The residents of the Robert Taylor Homes will miss you. 5266 will miss you. Thank you for your fight.

“We’ve got a gang issue, specific to parts of the city, and we have a responsibility to bring a quality of life to those residents, and we are going to do it,” Mayor Emanuel, visibly vexed, said in an interview on Friday.

“My bigger issue is not only the homicides and shootings,” he added. “It’s what it does to all the legitimate citizens in that community and the kids.”

Gangs in this city have changed over the decades, splintering from a small set of well-established bands into hundreds of tinier groups with alliances so disparate and shifting that even a former Gangster Disciple member from the West Side, who refused to be named but revealed bullet scars during an interview as proof of his rougher days, said he could not begin to keep them all straight. In just the last two years, the police say, 500 monitored gang factions have fractured into more than 600, many of them with stunningly ready access to guns.
