Tissot PRX: Channeling The 70s In Style With An Ice Blue Dial
Tissot has announced several new versions of their popular PRX watch line, offering fresh colors, materials, and movements to suit different styles. The PRX first made waves when relaunched in 2021 with its cool 1970s styling and slender, integrated bracelet. Now Tissot is expanding the selection while retaining the collection's distinctive DNA.
The icy tone pops against the watch's polished, tapered steel case
The most eye-catching addition is a new ice blue dial color for the automatic PRX Powermatic 80 model. The icy tone pops against the watch's polished, tapered steel case and chequered dial pattern. This signature embossed texture is only found on Tissot's automatic PRX watches, setting them apart from the quartz models. Powering the watch is Tissot's Powermatic 80 movement which provides an ample 80-hour power reserve.
Available in two sizes offering versatality
For even more wrist presence, the PRX Automatic Chronograph combines the collection's vintage vibe with modern Swiss watchmaking. The 42mm chronograph features contrasting silver and blue dials, a Valjoux movement, and crisp chronograph pushers flanking the crown. World Oceans Day Special: The Watch Industry’s Call-To-Action For Ocean Conservation
Our planet, Earth, brims with secrets waiting to be unraveled. Humanity's insatiable curiosity has driven us to explore the cosmos, reaching for the unknown beyond the horizon. We've ascended to dizzying heights and even left footprints on the dusty lunar surface. Yet, one vast realm remains largely untouched: the ocean. Covering a staggering more than 70% of Earth's surface, the ocean presents a seemingly familiar expanse. However, beneath the sunlit waves lies a forgotten world shrouded in darkness. Nearly 95% of the ocean's depths remain unexplored, a hidden universe teeming with life yet to be documented. Mankind’s understanding of the Martian landscape surpasses its knowledge of what lies mere meters from the coastlines.
Although 50% of all life forms on our planet exist in oceans, scientific estimates suggest that the ocean's depths harbor a million more species, a hidden biodiversity exceeding that found on land. So, is there a possibility that a yellow talking sponge and his starfish friend trudge the Pacific floor inviting all kinds of trouble? Well, it could be!
With millions of underwater species yet to be discovered, can Spongebob Squarepants be for real?
However, a concerning reality casts a shadow over the magnificent oceanic realm. We pollute the very source of life with reckless abandon. Plastic debris chokes vibrant coral reefs and toxic waste taints the waters. Millions of marine creatures perish annually, victims of our carelessness. The situation in China exemplifies this global catastrophe: a staggering 90% of the water near its major cities is now contaminated. Every single day, an additional 60,000,000 tons of waste are dumped into the ocean, creating a silent and ever-growing tide of destruction. More than 11 million metric tons of plastic go into the ocean every year. We are, in essence, poisoning the very cradle of life.
Our oceans are drowning in plastic. Every year, another 11 million tons pile on top of the estimated 200 million tons already swirling around, source - Ocean Conservancy.
Painting The Planet Blue
The ocean’s presence touches every living thing, no matter where it lives. The air we breathe and the water we consume are ultimately linked to the seas. The ocean drives our weather and stabilizes our climate. Nowhere is more powerful and unforgiving, yet more beautiful and endlessly fascinating. Yet for too long, we have taken the ocean for granted. In an initiative to inspire people with the wonders of the ocean and also help them understand the threats it is facing, watch brands partner with ocean conservation programs to empower the research and efforts to protect marine life and preserve the seas.
The historical link between horology and oceans has not only facilitated the invention of diving-necessary instruments, but also a collaborative endeavor to support ocean conservation initiatives. As watchmakers are doing their bit for preserving maritime ecology and ecosystem, let's see how the horological forefront is invested in these efforts and devising solutions to mitigate the crisis.
Watchmaking With an Attention to The Oceans
June 8 marks the World Oceans Day - an official recognition by the United Nations since 2008. Synonymous with the ethos of the day, watch manufacturers have been perpetually invested in raising awareness about the ocean, its conservation, sustainability and preservation of oceanic life. While the incentive for certain organizations and programs dedicated to the efforts for ocean preservation is understood, the impetus that links watch brands to the initiative needs to be learned. It's all got to do with the intrinsic essence of a tool watch, particularly the dive watch. A special segment of the horological creations is designed and manufactured to support the need for professional diving. Just like many inventions necessitated by WWII, professional dive timers and air-tight watches of the inceptive era bore a utilitarian essence. A commercialization of the dive watch concept was observed in the early 1950s when Blancpain and Rolex gave us the Fifty Fathoms and Submariner respectively. These would grow to be the category’s most iconic watches.
Early dive watches like the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms were pivotal for promotional recreational diving while also aiding professional marine exploration.
The dive watches popularized recreational diving as well as professional ocean exploration as well. With much unknown about the ocean, the yearning to explore and venture deep has been mankind’s premier desire since the invention of proper diving equipment. You must know that the immense scale of the ocean depths is almost unimaginable. Let this sink in: the Challenger Deep, the ocean's deepest known point, plunges 10,916 meters - a distance dwarfing even Mount Everest (8,848 meters). Remarkably, humanity has ventured to this abyssal realm. In 1960, a manned submersible touched the bottom of the Challenger Deep, showcasing our enduring spirit of exploration. Decades later, in 2012, James Cameron undertook another daring descent, reminding us of the ocean's profound allure. Rolex partnered with James on the expedition and rushed to produce a bespoke dive watch, the Rolex Deepsea Challenge for the endeavor. Since then, Rolex and many other brands have been perpetually invested in efforts to sponsor and promote ocean research and conservation efforts.
Here’s a dissection of the same.
Supporting Scientific Exploration and Research
A growing number of luxury watch brands are demonstrating a commendable commitment to ocean conservation. This engagement extends beyond product design, with some brands establishing dedicated foundations and others forging deep partnerships with scientific research initiatives.
Leveraging its rich heritage of supporting groundbreaking exploration, Rolex launched the Perpetual Planet initiative in 2019. This program empowers a new generation of environmental - scientists, entrepreneurs and engaged citizens. By fostering strategic partnerships and impactful programs, the initiative champions their dedication to safeguarding our planet's future. In celebration of the 2021 World Oceans Day, Rolex released a 52-minute documentary titled, “Perpetual Planet: Heroes of the Oceans.” The film convenes Dr. Sylvia Earle, a preeminent oceanographer and Rolex Testimonee, alongside a distinguished consortium of marine science pioneers. Through their collaborative narrative, the initiative showcases global endeavors to safeguard the ocean's vulnerable ecosystems. You can watch it here. Rolex also sponsors the “Our World Underwater Scholarship Society” which annually selects a promising student to enter the field of marine conservation. This program emphasizes education as a key tool in ocean preservation efforts.
The renowned oceanographer and explorer, Sylvia Earle has been linked with Rolex since 1970. She was cast in the Rolex documentary: Perpetual Planet: Heroes of the Oceans.
Blancpain is another brand with ocean preservation as a core incentive. Blancpain's dive into ocean conservation began with the Blancpain Ocean Commitment, which pays homage to the brand’s deep connection with the oceans. This relationship found agenesis with the introduction of the Fifty Fathoms, the first modern diving watch in 1953. Since then, they've championed exploration alongside scientists and environmentalists. Their efforts include supporting expeditions, raising awareness through media and founding the World Ocean Summit for global leadership discussions.
Blancpain actively aids research by collaborating with ocean experts. They've partnered on projects like the Tamataroa Project studying sharks in French Polynesia. They also support innovative restoration efforts like the Great Barrier Reef project with the Biopixel Oceans Foundation. Additionally, Blancpain champions PADI's Adopt the Blue program, empowering divers to protect our oceans. Blancpain's commitment sure ensures a brighter future for the underwater world.
Partnering With Foundations
Watch brands partnering with foundations with an ambition to raise public awareness and reinforce the imperative of ocean sustainability has been a long-observed trend. In this regard, Omega has cultivated a profound commitment to ocean exploration and conservation. This dedication transcends timekeeping excellence, as they actively partner with individuals and organizations at the forefront of unlocking the secrets of the world's oceans and safeguarding their vital ecosystems. Omega demonstrates a profound dedication to ocean conservation through its partnership with the GoodPlanet Foundation. The brand's commitment was vividly showcased in the documentary “Planet Ocean,” which aimed to raise awareness about underwater environmental issues. In further support of marine conservation, Omega donates a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the Seamaster Planet Ocean GoodPlanet watch. These funds are allocated to various initiatives, including the preservation of seagrasses and coral reefs in Southeast Asia. Omega's continuous efforts include the creation of the Planet Ocean watch, with sales proceeds contributing to the protection of mangroves and seagrass, reinforcing their unwavering commitment to safeguarding our oceans.

Another brand with a deep-found affinity for the oceans, Doxa, has been the official timekeeper for Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society’s Expedition Team. Its aim is to explore the global oceans, inspiring and educating people to derive responsible actions for ocean preservation at a large scale.
Watchmaking With Recycled Ocean Materials
Unlike the many opportunistic entities with unfortunately contaminated mission statements, the watchmaking industry’s faithful endeavors towards ocean conservation are truly commendable. For the champions that carve the perpetual tale of time, sustainability isn’t a mere buzzword. In addition to the actions discussed above, sometimes the core fabrics of watchmaking get weaved with impactful efforts aimed towards understanding and countering the threats our oceans are facing. This is when watchmaking adopts sustainability at a higher epoch.
The dial of the Oris Aquis Date Upcycle is made from recycled PET bottles.
Oris has time and now demonstrated the craft of manufacturing its watches from recycled ocean plastic and materials at a higher level. Its dive watch collection, the Aquis series has been a perfect bed top brew this commitment. In 2023, Oris introduced the Aquis Date Upcycle. Its vividly multi-colored dial is made from recycled PET plastic bottles, scavenged from oceans. For the creation, Oris partnered with a Swiss recycled-materials specialist #tide. Oris also partners with Bracenet to create special edition watches with unique dials crafted from recycled fishing nets. Another Swiss manufacturer, Maurice Lacroix has a collaboration with #tide on creating a timepiece out of ocean-bound upscaled waste. The brand in this initiative has committed to recover 10 million plastic bottles from the coast of Thailand which would have ended up in the ocean. The recycled material is meticulously worked to create the Aikon #tide watches as part of the brand's popular urban timepiece collection. Luminox ECO series watches also feature cases crafted from #tide recycled ocean plastic. Titoni and Norqain have also partnered with #tide for creating the straps of their Seascoper and Freedom collection watches. The Breitling Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 ‘Ocean Conservancy’ Limited Edition too features recycled fishing-net sourced materials for the strap construction.
In just 1.5 years, Maurice Lacroix has gathered over 7 million bottles from the seas as part of its sustainability initiative for upcycling ocean plastic.
Upcycled fishing net material recovered from the oceans forms one of the case material ingredients for the Ulysse Nardin Diver Net Azure and Diver X Skeleton Azure watches. These haute horlogerie divers pieces execute composite construction with ocean recycled materials aimed at attaining not only better aesthetics or ergonomics, but a sincere commitment to ocean conservation as well. Alpina’s Seastrong Diver also utilizes recycled fishing net material for constructing its composite case. Many iterations of Seiko’s limited edition “Save the Ocean” pieces from the Prospex collection feature NATO straps crafted from recycled plastic bottles.
Consistent with the efforts of sustainability in watchmaking, Panerai has recently introduced three iterations of the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM. Recognising the efforts of sustainability in horological crafts, Panerai constructed the cases of these timepieces with recycled materials corresponding to more than half of the total weight of the watches. Watchmaking and clockmaking share a deep, intrinsic connection that spans centuries of horological history. At their core, both disciplines revolve around the precise measurement and display of time through intricate mechanical movements. The fundamental principles and technical challenges faced by watchmakers and clockmakers are strikingly similar.
We caught up with Vianney Halter to understand more about his relics of the future, a fascination for vintage items and more!
THM: You started at the young age of 14, and then worked as a pendulum clock repairman. Tell us about your journey so far.

Vianney Halter at his workshop
Initially, my interest was not in creating new watches but rather in repairing and understanding the workings of antique and vintage timepieces. I was drawn to discovering the different constructions, complications, and ingenious solutions employed in their design. Creating my own watches came later, almost by chance. Although watchmaking was in decline in the late 1970s when I began studying it at 14, I was undeterred, lured by the intrigue of antique horology more than any prospects of commercial success. My motivations were rooted in a childhood fascination with the inner workings of timekeepers.
THM: Has there been any watchmaker that has inspired you on this journey?

Workshop (copyright-Ed.Nguyen)
I spent hours studying the impressive antique clocks, particularly the works of Antide Janvier from the late 18th/early 19th century. His innovative mechanisms and technical architecture for displaying time mesmerized me — the golden age of watchmaking. Janvier’s pieces deeply inspired my perspective on this art. I also admired the work of contemporary Paul Garnier, whose intricate machine constructions behind the dials were engineering marvels. The astronomical devices by clockmakers like Le Roy & Modele families, with their precise complications, further stoked my fascination.
THM: As an independent watchmaker, what were the challenges you faced to establish your brand?

Anitqua

Unexpectedly, I transitioned from just being a supplier to an independent watchmaker with my own designs. As my customer base grew, my distinctive style combining historical inspiration with modern, almost science-fiction elements became recognized. While still a bench watchmaker at heart, I’ve become more — using my experience and skills to create unique pieces that inspire new generations with a free perspective different from the industry. Chance allowed me to avoid being confined to a single company, instead forging my own independent path in watchmaking.
THM: You’re known to produce watches in a limited number. Is there an ideology behind that?

Classic Janvier
Occasionally I deliberately restrict a model to a very small limited number, like only 12 pieces for the Classic Janvier or Anniversary of Liberty editions. This is not to artificially market it as “limited”, but because making just 12 examples is an immense workload representing potentially half of what I can produce in a year. Capping the number allows me to move on and explore new designs and complications, rather than being consumed by one popular model’s success.
Money provides freedom to invest in exploring new horizons, “to seek out new life and new civilizations”, as they say. But wealth itself is not the end goal, to die the richest person in the cemetery. I prefer spending my money during my lifetime than hoarding it.
THM: What is your team like at the workshop?

La Resonance (Credits: The Horophile)
THM: Your latest Art Deco Metropolis watch pays homage to the 1920s industrial design movement. How did you translate those design principles into a modern wristwatch?

Art Deco Metropolis

As for the Resonance, I had dreamed of creating that technical solution 25 years ago, and finally brought it to life when the right conditions aligned — my motivation, the team’s enthusiasm, and a suitable design direction. My creative process isn’t formulaic or driven by rigid targets. It flows naturally as we discuss ideas, get inspired by each other’s work, experiment at the workbench, and gravitate towards concepts that resonate.
THM: How has India been as a market for you and are you looking to explore further?
Vianney: While India has historically been a challenging market for my unconventional designs, I’m hopeful the younger generation there and elsewhere will connect with the deeper meaning behind my work — the spirit of sharing unique perspectives, human experiences and emotions transcending pure timekeeping. My pieces are an expression of the time and passion invested in creating something extraordinary.
THM: You’ve done some interesting collaborations. If there was a dream collaboration which one would it be?

Deep Space Tourbillon
From my early days creating pieces to the design explorations with Harry Winston, collaborations open up possibilities that might never have materialized working independently. It takes a company’s advertising power and reach to truly share your work globally. Collaborations require finding a balance between your vision and compromising on aspects you may dislike. But that friction pushes you out of your comfort zone, adapting to different business perspectives. It’s a way to connect with broader audiences who may not have access to your mainline pieces. I enjoy meeting people from different fields — movies, art, science — as collaborations expose you to new circles you’d never encounter alone.
THM: What can we expect from Vianney Halter in the future?
Vianney: Ultimately, we are highly motivated to create watches. The Art Deco Metropolis was an important step for me, as it transformed industrial 19th century design into a contemporary 20th century style that I found fascinating. Going forward, I plan to develop complications for different models stemming from this original design. On another front, I’m working on a complicated piece with a futuristic space and science fiction inspired perspective. This contrasts with another watch design I first drew 25 years ago, which serendipitously resurfaced recently for us to develop further.
I hope to launch these contrasting pieces encapsulating my roots and future vision within the next 2–4 years. It will be an intriguing blend of where I came from and where I see myself going. Additionally, I have ongoing collaborations where I meld my viewpoints with others. Considering the production schedule, many exciting developments lie ahead over the next decade!

Tudor Black Bay vs Pelagos: A Dive Watch Face-Off
Among Tudor’s impressive roster of dive watches, two collections stand out for their popularity and distinctive personalities – the vintage-inspired Black Bay and the modern performance-driven Pelagos. They represent divergent interpretations of the ultimate tool watch, each with its own rich heritage.
Origins and History
The first Tudor dive watch, the Oyster Prince Submariner reference 7922, debuted in 1952 as a more affordable alternative to Rolex’s submarine watch. This set the blueprint for Tudor’s future diving instruments, which continued to evolve through models like the ranger-inspired 7924 and the iconic 7928 with signature snowflake hands.
Drawing inspiration from these mid-20th century classics, the Black Bay burst onto the scene in 2012 as a revival of Tudor’s rich diving roots. With its domed dial, gold detailing, engraved bezel, and snowflake hands, the original Black Bay 79220 encapsulated the retro charm of vintage Tudor divers. Its 41mm steel case was powered by a Swiss ETA movement and rated to 200m.
The Pelagos also debuted in 2012 but as an entirely new diver engineered for maximum capabilities. Its angular 42mm titanium case, snowflake hands, and conspicuous helium escape valve gave the Pelagos a decisively functional personality. The in-house MT5612 movement, 500m depth rating, and ceramic bezel marked it as a true modern diving instrument.
Evolving Collections
While both lines launched in 2012, the years since have seen their collections greatly expand in different directions. The Black Bay branched out into an entire family embracing various facets of Tudor’s past. This includes versions with different case materials (steel, bronze, two-tone), sizes (41mm, 39mm, 36mm, 32mm), and complications (GMT, chronograph).
The Black Bay 58, introduced in 2018, was another retro-inspired model, this time based on Tudor’s 7924 from 1958. It featured vintage styling cues like a 39mm case, domed crystal and bezel, riveted bracelet, and gold “gilt” dial.
In contrast, the Pelagos series has stuck firmly to its minimalist tool watch roots, offering mainly size options rather than stylistic variations. In addition to the original 42mm, there is a 39mm midsize model and the new FXD version with fixed strap bars. A limited edition left-hand model was also introduced.
Technical Specifications and Performance
In keeping with the vintage personality of the Black Bay, most models use Tudor’s workhorse MT5402 automatic movement. Some newer chronograph versions have upgraded to the MT5813 manufacture caliber that offer water resistance ranging from 200m to 300m.
The Pelagos is equipped with Tudor’s MT5612 movement featuring a variable inertia balance and silicon hairspring. COSC-certified for precision, this automatic calibre is engineered specifically for diving reliability.
The 500m depth rating, helium escape valve, and titanium case make the Pelagos suitable for intense underwater activity. Other technical advantages include the spring-loaded bracelet clasp and the luminous ceramic bezel which lacks embellishments, enhancing legibility.
Design Philosophy and Aesthetics
With their different inspirations, the design philosophies of the Black Bay and Pelagos diverge as well. The myriad Black Bay models celebrate different eras and aesthetics from Tudor’s past including 1950s rivet bracelets and gilt dials, 1960s rounded cases and bezel inserts, 1970s burgundy and blue bezels, and more.
This variety translates into a handsome but decidedly vintage-flavored style often with domed dials, gold embellishments, engraved bezels, and two-tone color schemes. Even modern materials are given a retro look, as with the Black Bay Bronze model styled after ancient bronze diving helmets.
In contrast, the Pelagos is informed first and foremost by utility and performance. Its sleek engineer aesthetic features an angular titanium case, a notched unidirectional bezel, a minimalist dial with rectangular indices, and a rubber strap. Splashes of color are rare, limited to blue and black dials and matching ceramic bezels.
The high-tech matt ceramic bezel and lumed sapphire crystal make the Pelagos incredibly legible underwater. The titanium case and bracelet clasp are both engineered for lightweight durability, reducing fatigue during prolonged dives.
Purpose and Value Proposition
With vintage diving heritage at its core yet also a readiness for leisure, the Black Bay presents a versatile retro-flavored style that transitions effortlessly from diving to daily wear. The Pelagos is focused squarely on delivering pragmatic functionality without compromise, making no concessions to aesthetics for the sake of pure diving performance.
Both families offer tremendous value, with prices ranging from around INR 250,000 to INR 3,80,000 onwards. Tudor’s attention to detail, in-house manufacturing, proven durability, and performance capabilities are present, at costs 30-50% lower than equivalent Rolex divers.
For buyers who favor a modern and robust technical diver, Pelagos is hard to beat. But those enamored with heritage and a dash of vintage flair will be drawn to the Black Bay’s enduring retro elegance. While their designs are philosophically different, the Black Bay and Pelagos epitomize Tudor’s mastery of diving watches.
Although the Black Bay and Pelagos share Tudor’s renowned build quality and capabilities, they differ substantially in design ethos and stylistic execution. The vintage-leaning Black Bay channels Tudor’s mid-century heyday through contemporized models diverse in size, material, and style. The form-follows-function Pelagos pioneers a resolutely modern and high-tech dive watch optimized for undersea utility.
Yet with shared snowflake hands and superb Swiss watchmaking at an accessible price, both the nostalgic Black Bay and cutting-edge Pelagos uphold Tudor’s reputation for exceptional dive watches. For those seeking a top-tier diving instrument rich in heritage or futuristic functionality, these Tudor divers present compelling and complementary options showcasing the brand’s mastery of underwater timekeeping.

A Comprehensive Guide For Calculating Customs Duty On Watches Imported In India
The world of watches, adorned with craftsmanship and precision, often finds itself traversing the boundaries of nations, unveiling a fascinating interplay of customs duties. The allure of a finely crafted timepiece is met with an intricate web of customs regulations. Across countries, a different plethora of duties awaits those who seek horological treasures.
Introduction to Customs Duty
Customs duty on imported goods, including watches, plays a pivotal role in regulating trade and protecting domestic markets. For importers, an accurate calculation of the customs duty is imperative. It directly influences the total expense of importing goods thereby affecting overall profitability.
We will offer an all-encompassing guide on the intricacies of computing customs duty for imported watches in India. It will elucidate the various categories of customs duty, delve into the influencing factors of the calculation and furnish practical tips and examples to enhance your understanding of the procedure.
Luxury watches imports in India grew over 21% in the first half of 2023 reaching $100 million, reported by Mint
Types of Custom Duties Applicable on Watches
In India, imported watches are subject to customs duty in accordance with the Customs Act of 1962 and its associated regulations. This encompasses a spectrum of duties, including but not limited to the following:
Basic Customs Duty (BCD):
The BCD is a percentage-based duty applied to the assessable value of the watch. The assessable value of the goods is determined by summing the cost of the item/s along with the incurred expenses for insurance and freight during the transportation to India.
Customs AIDC:
The Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC) is imposed on certain goods including wristwatches when imported in India.Top of Form
Additional Customs Duty (ACD):
Additional Customs Duty or Countervailing Duty (CD) is imposed at a rate equivalent to the applicable excise duty on similar goods manufactured in India. It is calculated on BCD.
Social Welfare Surcharge (SWC):
SWC is imposed at 10% of the combined amount of duties, taxes and cesses. This surcharge is intended to bolster the Government's dedication to enhancing education, healthcare and social security initiatives.
Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST):
IGST is a tax levied on the total value of the imported watch. It is calculated as 18% of the assessable value plus the duties, taxes and cesses.
Swiss luxury timepieces have captured the interest of enthusiasts across India and esteemed brands seize the flourishing market prospects to attract sales with exclusive timepieces, such as this Vacheron Constantin Overseas Timepiece for India
Calculating Customs Duty for Watch Imports
To compute customs duty for imported watches in India, importers must furnish essential documents, including the bill of entry, invoice, packing list and insurance records. Subsequently, customs authorities assess the value of the goods, such as the assessable value and CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight), to determine the applicable customs duty.
Similar to various asset classes, Indians are presently making substantial investments in luxury watches. Timepieces like the Patek Philippe 5236P with an in-line display perpetual calendar offer attractive ROI. Despite a 25% price increase for luxury watches in India, the demands face a consistent surge
Similar to various asset classes, Indians are presently making substantial investments in luxury watches. Timepieces like the Patek Philippe 5236P with an in-line display perpetual calendar offer attractive ROI. Despite a 25% price increase for luxury watches in India, the demands face a consistent surge
Factors Influencing Calculation of Customs Duty
The calculation of customs duty is a nuanced process influenced by a myriad of the following factors:
Value of the Item:
The value of the imported item is ascertained by combining the expenses related to the goods, encompassing the cost of the item, insurance charges and the freight charges associated with its transportation to India.
Country of Origin:
As certain nations hold distinct trade agreements and tariff rates with India, the country of origin influences the customs duty calculation.
Classification of Items:
The Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) codes are used to classify goods imported in India. Wristwatches are specifically categorized under clocks and watches and parts thereof.
Their classification as Tariff Item HSN codes 9101 / 9102 and standard rates of duty are defined as under:
Source, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs
Steps for Calculation of Customs Duty for Watches Imported in India
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to calculate the applicable custom duty levied on wristwatch imports:
Determine the Assessable Value of the wristwatch or its CIF:
This is derived by summing the cost of the items, along with the incurred insurance and freight charges.
Identify Applicable Customs Duty Rates and GST Duty:
Identify the applicable Basic Custom Duty (BCD), Customs AIDC, Social Welfare Surcharge (SWC) and IGST Levy based upon classification as per HSN codes.
Calculate Duty:
Calculate the Total Duty percentage by adding all applicable custom duty rates.
The Indian Customs Electronic Gateway (ICEGATE) portal offers a calculator for determining the structure of duty for wristwatches.
Here is a sample calculation of customs duty of a wristwatch imported in India from Switzerland with an assessable value of Rs. 2,00,000:
Total Duty Amount on a wristwatch import with Assessable Value of Rs. 2,00,000:
Source, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs
Basic Customs Duty (BCD) + Customs AIDC + Social Welfare Surcharge (SWC) + IGST Levy
20% (of assessable value) + 20% (of BCD) + 20% (of BCD + AIDC) + 18% (of assessable value + BCD + AIDC + SWC)
40,000 + 8,000 + 4,800 + 45,504 = 98,304 or 49.152% (of assessable value)
Import Duty Exemptions
There might be exemptions or reduced duties for certain categories of watches, based on trade agreements or specific government policies.
Influence on the Watch Market
The imposition of customs duty holds the power to steer the direction of the watch market. Whether it prompts a surge in the demand for domestic alternatives or continues to drive the pursuit of international luxury timepieces is a fascinating aspect to observe.
In 2021, luxury watch imports experienced a notable 19% growth, propelling India beyond nations like Kuwait, Ireland, Bahrain, Belgium, Portugal, Greece and Malaysia. However, waiting periods for sought-after brands such as A. Lange & Söhne persist, extending into periods of months or even years
Impact on Collectors and Enthusiasts
For those passionate about horology, customs duty becomes a pivotal consideration in the pursuit of their coveted timepieces. Some might explore avenues to acquire their desired watches within the confines of duty regulations, while others may weigh the options differently.
The pursuit of an exquisite timepiece isn’t merely about its mechanics or brand - it’s a narrative woven with passion, regulations and the essence of time itself.

Limited to just 20 pieces, this exquisite timepiece is a testament to the skills of the Manufacture's in-house Métiers Rares™ atelier, where ancestral crafts are meticulously preserved and elevated to new artistic heights.

With its breathtaking dial that transforms the very concept of time into a masterpiece of artistic expression, this extraordinary timepiece is a testament to the Manufacture's unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Encased in an 18-carat pink gold case, the Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948 is a true embodiment of horological artistry. Its multi-layered dial, measuring a mere 25.5mm in diameter, is a remarkable work of art in miniature. The continents are intricately cut from a fine plate of 18-carat gold and adorned with champlevé enamel, displaying a level of precision that defies imagination. Beneath this domed structure, representing the oceans, lies a dial plate decorated with a blue-green translucent lacquer applied over a wavy guilloché pattern, subtly suggesting the movement of the sea. Adding to the visual depth and complexity, a green opaline ring encircles the central dial, denoting the time zones with the names of cities.
A Celestial Dance of Time At the heart of this horological marvel beats Calibre 948, a masterpiece of engineering and innovation. This automatic movement, comprising 388 components, is an eloquent expression of Jaeger-LeCoultre's technical expertise, having been conceived, developed, and entirely produced within the Manufacture.

As the tourbillon makes a complete 360-degree revolution of the dial in 24 hours, the domed map and the city ring turn in unison, mimicking the rotation of Earth on its axis, ensuring that the right time in every city is always indicated by the hour marked adjacent to the city name.
A Harmonious Blend of Innovation and Tradition
The Master Grande Tradition Calibre 948 is a true embodiment of Jaeger-LeCoultre's commitment to uniting artistic creativity with sophisticated mechanics. With its magnificent green dial and exceptional technical prowess, this timepiece stands as a testament to the Maison's unwavering dedication to maintaining the fine balance between the spirit of innovation and a profound respect for tradition.

MB&F’s HM8 Mark 2 Supercar For The Wrist Get A Racy Sapphire Blue Bodywork
The enthusiasm for cars and watches is often a shared affinity for mechanical marvels. Be it the growling roar of a naturally-aspirated V8 or the meticulously precise oscillation of a balance wheel, the allure of a perfectly choreographed motion of components is a fascination for many. Among the ones inspired, is a dreamer, a watch designer, an irresistibly adorable personality and none other than the founder of MB&F - Maximilian Büsser. As a blossoming child, Max always dreamt about being a car designer. While the universe had a parallel plan for him, his realized career path never restricted his creative and magnificent exhibition of automotive affinity. This got metamorphized as a wrist adornment in the form of HM5 launched in 2012. The dream peaked when Max introduced the HM8 in 2016 which refined further to yield the HM8 Mark 2 in 2023. Now the supercar inspired design gets wheeled off as a limited edition of 33 timepieces featuring titanium chassis and a sapphire blue bodywork.

A Watch Built Like a Car
Tracing the automotive inspired design cues for the HM8 Mark 2 won’t be a hassle for true petrolheads. The aesthetic boasts significant design cues hinting towards the trademark aesthetic of the Porsche 918 Spyder. Just like an automobile, only this time fit for the wrist, we get a 30 meters water-resistant chassis which houses its powerhouse, a three-dimensional engine featuring jumping hour and trailing minutes displays, evoking the speedometer aesthetic of the 70s. The movement is based on a Girard-Perregaux caliber packing in a mileage of 42 hours from a full tank. It revs, beats harmonically, at a rate of 28,800 vph and is constructed from a total of 247 components with a 22k gold rotor being the true masterstroke in its construction.
Although this 2024 iteration of the HM8 Mark 2 features updates limited to cosmetic nuances, they sure let the timepiece express its automotive roots even better. The bodywork gets a metallic pigment paintwork, just like we see in supercars. It’s constructed from MB&F exclusive CarbonMacrolon composite material for added strength and rigidity. The metallic sapphire blue hues evoke a deep automotive allure and surely strike all the right chords, for horology aficionados and car lovers alike. Paired with a sporty and white calfskin strap, the overall package feels very racy.
The translation of automotive essence isn’t limited to aesthetic inspiration but mechanical nuances and nomenclature as well. Its crown is a one-of-a-kind system featuring a ‘double de-clutch’ system for engagement or activation. Positioned at its posterior side, the crown required a push-twist motion for extraction.

Our Thoughts
The metallic sapphire blue hue is a welcome addition to the HM8 Mark 2 series. It further accentuates its automotive essence and makes it appear even sportier. Just like the Porsche 918 Spyder on which it's aesthetically based, the timepiece feels and appears to be racing away at 200 mph even while being still on the wrist. The glossy aesthetic makes it feel even more aerodynamic, a true secret in gaining on the last few notches of speed which make all the difference between being the first to cross the checkered flag or the one among losers. After all, Ayrton Senna poetically expressed the notion as, “Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose.”

Among Cartier's iconoclastic early designs, the Tortue watch unveiled in 1912 stood out for its audacious tortoise-inspired shape. While the Santos-Dumont and Tonneau models preceded it, the Tortue's curvaceous case marked a bold departure from the era's round watches. Often overlooked next to Cartier's legendary Tank, the Tortue remains one of the Maison's most brilliant and enduring creations. With the 2024 Cartier Privé release featuring the Tortue, this unhurried horological hero reaffirms its lasting appeal at Watches & Wonders 2024.
The Revamped Tortue:
For the 8th edition of the prestigious Cartier Privé collection, the brand unveils contemporary interpretations of the Tortue across simple time-only and premium chronograph versions. While retaining the archetypal tortoise silhouette, the new models feature refined proportions. Elongated lugs seamlessly flow into the straps, while slimmer cases lend an elegant lightness.
The hours/minutes versions demonstrate incredible attention to detail. On the yellow gold pieces, the finely-grained golden dials are quintessential Cartier, complemented by sapphire cabochon crowns and iconic blue alligator straps. The platinum models are exercises in chromatic harmony - opaline silvered dials, ruby cabochon crowns, and cartier diamond watches-pavé buckles create a regal aesthetic. All models, including a 50-piece diamond-set platinum cartier limited edition watches, are powered by Cartier's ultra-thin manual-wind Calibre 430 MC, optimized for the iconic curved case.
The Monopoussoir Chronograph
However, the pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the Tortue Monopoussoir Chronograph driven by the Manufacture Calibre 1928 MC. Remarkably, the original 1928 Tortue Monopoussoir was Cartier's very first chronograph. This diminutive 25mm by 35mm watch pioneered the innovative single-pusher concept – with the start, stop, and reset functions all controlled by one pusher integrated into the crown.

It housed a traditional column-wheel chronograph movement with a horizontal clutch, yet stood out with distinctive 1920s design elements. These included a slim hand-carved bezel, matte dial with blocky Roman numerals, chemin de fer minute track and exquisite flame-blued Breguet hands. Produced in extremely limited numbers, an original 1928 Tortue Monopoussoir is an exceedingly rare sight at modern auctions.
The 2024 revival captures the essence of this groundbreaking chronograph in a superbly refined modern form. The legible dial layout prioritizes the monopusher concept, with the rail-track chapter ring on the periphery leaving ample room for the two snailed chronograph counters. Signature flourishes like blued-steel hands, hollowed central chronograph hand, and triangular quarter markers enrich the already scintillating visuals. Yet the real magic reveals itself through the open caseback - the superbly decorated column-wheel choreographing the high-precision levers and springs in a mechanical dance.
At just 4.3mm, the 1928 MC is Cartier's thinnest chronograph calibre ever, a remarkable feat condensed into a curved asymmetric case only 10.2mm thick. The finissage combines age-old decorations like Geneva striping with immaculate hand-bevelling, brushing and circular graining. The monochrome platinum model juxtaposes rhodium-plating against blued counters, while the yellow gold variant radiates warmth through its honeyed dials and counters.
Final Thoughts!
Limited to 200 pieces each in platinum and yellow gold, the Tortue Monopusher is, in my opinion, one of the haute horlogerie world's most underrated gems. By combining centuries of high-watchmaking craft with a unique curved signature design tracing back to 1928, it achieves a level of aesthetic and mechanical coherence few can match. While the exorbitant pricing limits access, these are ultimately peerless examples of the sheer innovation and avant-garde spirit that defines cartier watches at its best.
With this sublime new Privé collection, the iconic Tortue regains its rightful place alongside the Maison's most legendary designs. For the true connoisseur, these creations represent slow, steady genius finally recognized as the timeless classics they are. The race for horological perfection has a new front-runner - unhurried, uncompromising, and entirely unforgettable.
