After months of looking, multiple fights that ended with Bucky staring warily at Steve before running off, and an eventful trip to Kiev, Bucky finally lets Steve and Sam find him in an abandoned house in the woods near a village in southern Ukraine. He refused to leave, so Sam and Steve stayed with him while they tried to come up with a plan.

The second night they’re there, Sam asked Bucky if he could help patch up his face; he had scratches and cuts from running and fighting that still hadn’t quite healed yet. Bucky stared at Sam who looked calmly back, posture relaxed, and jerked out a short nod.

Steve got their first aid kit and set everything up at the table. Sam picked up an antiseptic wipe, looked at Bucky and said, “Tell me if it hurts.” Bucky’s eyebrows and the corners of his mouth barely twitch down and he glanced at Steve before he looked back to Sam and hesitantly asked, “Why?” 

Steve had to leave the room while Sam quietly explained that he would stop if Bucky was in pain.
