Getting Ready
They’re here! Springers are starting to get caught on the Upper Rogue, and now I’m chomping at the bit to get out. Next week I’ll start my usual tradition of waking up at 3am to get to the river early. The early bird gets the worm, especially when it comes to Rogue River spring salmon. I’ve got a couple bobber rods already set up, eggs defrosting, and just have to pick up some sandshrimp. It’s literally salmon candy, and they can’t resist.
Here’s to hoping I can connect with a fish or two right away. It’s been way to long since I’ve felt the tug on the end of my line!

Rogue River Fishing Guides
One of the best investments I think someone can make is to hire a guide. When it comes to salmon fishing the Rogue River there can be a huge learning curve. By hiring a guide you can cut that time down considerably. My personal recommendation for a Rogue River fishing guide is S.O. Chrome Guide Service. I’ve been out with Steven Theel a few times, and he’s always been a class act, and made the day very enjoyable. His knowledge of the Rogue River, and how to catch salmon is amazing. He’s taught me so much info that has really increased my success. Whether you’re looking to learn, or just get out and have a fun day, I’d definitely recommend booking a trip with him.
You can see him in action in this great video with Team Pautzke:

Day Dreaming about Springers
The weather is starting to get warmer, and I’ve been finding myself day dreaming about springers a lot lately. The guys over at Southern Oregon Fishing use to make some of the best videos around, and this one has always been one of my favorites:

The Rogue River offers some great fishing from May through June for these awesome tasting salmon. Only a couple months to go before I’m finally wetting a line.

Tips for Catching Spring Salmon
I recently came across a great article with some very helpful tips for catching Rogue River Salmon. I couldn’t agree more with what they recommend. Here’s my breakdown of the best tips:
Get Up Early!
Get Away from the crowd
Use eggs, especially scented with canned tuna.
Make a shrimp cocktail
Tumblr media
If you follow those easy steps along with what they recommend in the article you’ll see a huge increase in your catch rates. Springers can seem daunting, and unfortunately it leads a lot of people to snagging them. Snagging salmon is illegal, and highly unethical. If you put in your time to learn how to catch them the right way it’s a lot more rewarding. There’s no better feeling than going home with a Rogue River salmon after getting him to bite.

Rogue River springers are my true passion. There isn't a harder, pound for pound, fighting King salmon in the Northwest. Luckily they've started to be caught on the Lower Rogue, and it won't be long before they're sitting in my favorite holes near Shady Cove. Springers can be one of the toughest salmon to catch, as they typically aren't very aggressive. When fishing off the bank my go-to is fishing eggs with a sandshrimp under a bobber, and away from the crowds that like to snag. I also love to get out in a drift boat occasionally, and back bounce one up. There's nothing quite like the bite of a springer. Hopefully our hatchery run will be better this year, so I can actually have some fresh salmon for the bbq.
