Sherlock Holmes Canon Content Analysis

My Holmie @cinny13 and I ran a content analysis on the Sherlock Holmes Canon, running through each "suspicious" description Watson gives of Holmes's hands. So this means "Holmes clapped his hands" does not apply, however "long thin hands", absolutely does. After gathering all the relevant passages (thanks to the author's personal annotated edition of the Canon), we have quantified the qualitative data.

That Watson may have an obsession with Holmes's hands is obvious. In future when I run over the Canon again I think it would be relevant to compare all of the hand descriptions, with all the rest concerning Holmes's body (e.g. "sinewy neck" or "gaunt limbs").

Anyway, I advocate for using science on the Sherlock Holmes Canon. Never stop being insane because this is what the world truly needs at the end of the day.

Holmes is a bit on edge in ‘The Final Problem’ and briefly takes refuge in Watson’s kitchen.  Being chased by assassins will do that to a man.

A guy moves in with you because you're both low on money and nobody else will tolerate your company.

Guy quickly becomes your best friend.

You love having him around, he stimulates your mind, he's kind and smart and brave and noble and he cares about you.

You could tell him this, but you don't know how, because it's been at least a decade since you last had a close friend and you're bad with expressing your feelings.

But you're happy living with him, this is good, this will last.

Except then he goes and does something out of nowhere. He falls in love and he wants to get married, and you can't be mad at him for going against your plan to live together and solve crimes into eternity, because he didn't know the plan, but you're mad anyway.

You're mad and you're bitter and you're jealous, and he's the only person around besides your landlady so all your ugly feelings get thrown at him.

And you hurt him, and he doesn't understand why you're being like this, why can't you be happy for him? You're his friend?

But how can you say that you want to keep him all to yourself because you've discovered you don't like who you are without him and you don't want to go back to that?

And he leaves. And he invites you but you don't go to his wedding. You don't see him for months. You work and get high and work some more.

Then he turns up one evening and you pull out all the stops to keep him in the room, and the client comes and he's royalty and a woman is trying to ruin his life and of course she's the one at fault, of course she is.

But then she isn't.

Your best friend came to see you and you completely embarrassed yourself in front of him. You didn't think past Woman and Marriage and In The Way.

She just wanted to be happy.

Well. Maybe now you get it.

I’ve been watching a lot of Granada Sherlock Holmes. 😅 my dad got me to watch it when it was on telly, cuz he really likes Jeremy Brett….and now I do too-THIS MAN IS A GIFT! ♡ And I’ve already been a big Sherlock Holmes fan, so it was fun to find some other show with him other than….*cough* BBC shitshow *cough*
