I find it very interesting how everyone is hating on Fields after that dinner party when the feeling I came away with was sudden incredible dislike of Burt and pity for Fields. They're even blaming Fields, claiming he "convinced Burt he's going to hell and needs severance". ???
What Burt said was, "I was guided". He made the choice. He also made the choice to invite Irving to dinner without discussing it with his husband.
Fields to me came across as someone who is both highly resentful of his spouse's failings but too comfortable with him or too in love with him to let him go. A Gretchen G. a few decades down the line, if you will.
Burt on the other hand is coming across as decidedly sinister. Someone who is obfuscating the truth and someone who is comfortable with pursuing his own interests with no consideration of his partner, which does not strike me as someone who would get experimental brain surgery just to protect his spouse's peace of mind.
