I stumbled across the village of Mézin when I made contact with a member of their Bridge Club. Not far from Nerac, Mezin sits on the far South West of Lot et Garonne, almost kissing the Gers, and is part of Gascony territory. The central square is dominated by the Church of Saint John the Baptist, a fortified church built in the roman style from the 11th to the 14th century. Mezin is also home to the Musee du Liege et du Bouchon, and in times gone by, Mezin produced 4-5 million corks each week, and the museum is dedicated to the cork making industry. Sadly I had very little time to explore this unspoilt village, but hope to revisit soon. My road trips, although long, are a great pleasure. Not only do I get the opportunity to meet some of our readers, but I also get to revisit some beautiful towns along the way. There are far too many to list, but Friday’s route (a bad start owing to a shattered rear windscreen), included Issigeac, Monpazier, and Villereal. Issigeac, a medieval village in the Dordogne, is probably best known for it’s Sunday market. And although quieter during the week, it allows time to explore the narrow winding streets and ancient buildings. There are also many artisans, boutique shops, Tea shops and of course a number of fabulous restaurants to choose from. Monpazier, also in the Dordogne, is a well-known Bastide town and another great tourist favorite. Founded in 1284 by the English King Edward I, it has remained virtually intact. In addition to the amazing history there are plenty of artisans, including a brewery where you can take a refreshing pit stop (obviously not whilst on a road trip!). Villeral, just a short skip into the Lot et Garonne, was also founded in the 13th century as a Bastide town. Another town full of history and winding streets to explore. Originally surrounded by a deep moat, since filled in and now the ring road circling the town. The 14th century market hall dominates the central square, and markets are held here every Saturday morning. (I also clocked a cheese shop which I shall make time for next time I’m there!) Next week I’ll be heading into Gascony territory…. Nestling in the Gélise river valley, the pretty village of POUDENAS in Lot et Garonne is overlooked by its elegant château. Built in the 13th-century and remodelled into an Italian palace four hundred years later, the Château de Poudenas is surrounded by a stunning 10-hectare park containing around 100 different tree species. Stone arcades are a feature by the river and the original Roman bridge was rebuilt in 1777. Don’t miss the Romanesque style 12th-century Eglise Saint-Christophe d’Arbussan with its single nave extended by a semi-circular apse. The Battle of Britain was the first major military campaign to be fought entirely in the air and saw the RAF defend Britain against large-scale attacks by Germany's Luftwaffe in World War II. It’s coming up to the time when the shops will be full of all types and colours of chrysanthemums. An ideal gift you might think? Think again! Whatever you do, you don’t want to be giving them, regardless of how beautiful they are, as a present. Why? The French traditionally buy these plants to decorate family tombs and graves at the cemetery.
