Lmao you鈥檙e an adult, you shouldn鈥檛 be using the word squick. Use trigger. Use your grown up adult words to explain how you feel instead of leaning on a cutesy uwu term that no one outside of tumblr uses. It鈥檚 embarrassing.
Idek if this is serious or ironic honestly

Someone I know not well enough to voice my opinion on the subject said something like why didn鈥檛 God make potatoes a low-calorie food so I am here to say: God made them like that because their nutrition density IS what makes them healthy. By God I mean Andean agricultural technicians. Potato is healthy BECAUSE potato holds calories and vitamins. Do not malign potato

hold on sorry you're telling me the name of the boat was "the terror"?? i always assumed that was a retroactive name! did they WANT things to go horrifically awry???
obsessed with the implication that nominative determinism could have saved them

Introduced my friends' two kids (and their mom, glorious) to TTRPG a couple weeks ago. My session 0 ended with this:
The POINT to this game is to have fun. Its for EVERYONE to have fun, including [the DM] me. The point isn't to win, you arguably can't "win". The point isn't to kill monsters, although that is fun for some. The point isn't to survive, although that can also be fun, but sometimes your character dying is really satisfying too. The point is to HAVE FUN, and everybody has fun a little differently. So we have to pay attention to everybody we're playing with, and make sure we're doing what we can to help everybody have as much fun as possible. But! You have to tell me if you're not having fun, so that I can help you. I'm not here to play against you, I want to have fun too, and I am not having fun if you're not having fun.
*
You can use TTRPG to teach kids empathy and teamwork and compromise. The problem is, a lot of adults never learned.
it's always so alarming looking at the notes on posts about people's cool experiences with ttrpgs and seeing the sheer number of people saying something along the lines "unfortunately this relies on the assumption that the players aren't huge shithead assholes who are actively trying to fuck each other over and make sure their gm has a bad time."
like. yeah, it sure does. that's kind of a baseline assumption for me, the same way that when I invite friends to a potluck I feel perfectly safe assuming that no one is going to spit in the food. do you guys actually like the people you're doing recreational activities with? blink if you need help.

"We call it vff," said the alien. "It's - it's hard to describe to a species without vffsense. Imagine trying to describe light to a species that never evolved eyes. But there are forms of life that are only perceptible with vffsense, and they've visited Earth and fed on life as long as it's existed here."
There was a pause.
Then the human said, "That's the worst thing you've ever said."
"Don't worry about it."
"I think I have to, now."
"No, because - well - you have a species of spider which pretends to be an ant, correct? It's not capable of understanding the fact that it's mimicking an ant, but it instinctually mimics an ant in order to deter predators."
"Sure?"
"Humans produce a vff to mimic varths, predators only perceptible through vffsense. The organisms that would like to feed on you are terrified of varths, and so they leave you alone. You aren't aware you do it, you don't have the capacity to understand you're doing it, but you evolved to instinctually do it to deter predators you can't see."
There was a pause.
Then the human said in a very soft and thoughtful voice, "And are there varths on Earth?"
"Yes," said the alien. "Everywhere. But don't worry about it."
