The Return of Jumanji?
Given that the latest installment of the decades old franchise known as Jumanji grossed a whopping $800 million in the box office only a few short years ago, it comes as no surprise that we could be seeing the return of this pop culture giant. Hiram Garcia, Dwayne Johnson’s longtime producing partner, shared that while we can certainly look forward to The Rock embodying Black Adam, we can also expect to see him and his Jumanji co-stars together again.
Garcia spoke with Collider and gave fans a little insight on the rumored return to Jumanji, “It’s going to happen. It’s going to happen, for sure. We have a really big vision for that third Jumanji movie,” Garcia shared. “We just were discussing the pitch the other day. We’re bringing it into Sony shortly. But that movie’s going to happen. It’s going to happen after Red One, but that timing actually works out well with all of the actors scheduled anyway. As you can imagine, Kevin [Hart] is super busy doing a million things, just like DJ is. All of the actors are super busy. So the timing is going to work out great, but we have a really great pitch for the movie we’re about to bring into the studio, probably going to get a script written soon. Sometime after Red One, Jumanji’s going to be on deck once it’s ready to go, and we have a really big vision for that movie.”
Garcia continued to say, “We love it, and we love that Jumanji family. That cast, the group of filmmakers, it’s one of our favorite experiences, love that whole team, Matt Tolmach, Jake Kasdan. But then when you’re having Jack [Black] and Karen [Gillan] and Kevin, again, another one of those special movies where you have just a bunch of giant megastar actors, and it’s just all the best. Those sets are one of the most fun sets you could ever be on. Everyone is so kind, so delightful. They all get along so well. It’s such a family that making those movies is just a true joy. Whenever we can do them, we love to come back for it, so that’s always a priority for us. That’s a big one for us that we definitely want to be able to come back and tell that third movie.” There can be no doubt that the resurgence of Jumanji will be yet another moment in cinematic history that we should all start preparing for if its predecessors are any indication.

‘Morbius’ is Met with Delays
Sony has certainly been on a roll with it’s latest comic book films, and ‘Morbius’ was set to add to this streak but we may have to wait a little longer than expected. The Omicron variant continues to make it’s rounds and COVID cases are on the rise, resulting in the delay of several releases scheduled in 2022 and sadly ‘Morbius’ was no exception. Sony Pictures has confirmed that the release date has been pushed back from January 28, 2022 to April 1, 2022. We all wished this to be a cruel April Fool’s joke, given that this is the sixth time ‘Morbius’ has received a delay and by extension, the sixth time fans have had to miss out on Jared Leto embodying the scientist turned vampire.
‘Morbius’ is directed by Daniel Espinosa and written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, and also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. Though this will be his first time leading in a comic book film, he has already made his debut as one of the most iconic villains in history. The actor previously played the role of the Joker in Suicide Squad, and was asked to reprise the part for a brief scene in last year’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. His take on the green haired tyrant was met with mixed reviews, but there can be no doubt that Leto made an impression.
Born in the MCU, ‘Morbius’ follows the story of Doctor Michael Morbius, a scientist who accidentally turns himself into a vampire. Morbius is a comic book character known for being an adversary to Spider-Man, but Sony appears to be making Morbius an antihero in their adaptation. The first trailer featured Vulture as well as Morbius walking by a poster of Spider-Man with the word “murderer” graffitied across it, which gave fans some insight as to what verse we can expect the film to be set in.
Despite the thread of delays, the years of excitement and attention the project has generated will more than likely help it at the box office, whenever it eventually comes out. After receiving paramount success from Spider-Man: No Way Home becoming the 10th highest-grossing movie domestically after reaching $610 million this past weekend so Sony is still perfectly poised to attract the attention of fans waiting for their next move.
