I was at a romance novel convention last week and one of the big takeaways that I think we should talk about more is how pretty much all authors have low self-esteem? And we should all be working on that?

Like, I was meeting authors whose work I really admire, who are doing cool stuff in this genre, and they were like, "oh but you're a REAL author, not like me, who is nothing." And as incorrect as I thought that was I would turn around and be faced with a really REALLY important-to-me author and go "well, they're a real author, unlike me, a loser" and this has got to stop.

From now on I am a KING. I am the ruler of my small but mighty backlist and I am greeting the other leaders with hearty guffaws and backslaps. We are metaphorically wearing ermine-trimmed cloaks and quaffing mead from goblets. Look at my fellow champions of art and magic!! We make books!!!!

Dark Water AU: softboi dad Harry and little drowned ghost Tom 🩷

The demonic child held him in a surprisingly tight grip, pulling backwards. Damp hair tickled his cheek and he caught a whiff of stagnant pond and rusty metal as he turned to look at Tom.

Harry still felt discomfort in his presence, even though the tiny ghost almost radiated absence of any malicious intent.

Wasn't he a malevolent spirit?

Most of the time Tom looked half-drowned and sullen, his eyes glistening in the shadows like two razor-sharp edges. But not once had he failed to smile at Harry or talk to him in a soft wondering voice.

Aside the disturbing appearance, he was a rather well-behaved and endearing child.

Especially at the moments when he clung to him, seeking either human warmth or parental approval, just like now.

You'll be my dad, right, Harry?

Erm, y-yeah,Tom. If you'll have me.

The child only tightened his grip on Harry, his face seeming nearly angelic, despite the dark veins running under the bluish skin. Tom nuzzled his neck and made a little whistly-hissy sound, making Harry grin at him.

Sometimes he could feel the anger rolling off the boy, tightly packed and controlled in his presence.

Harry wondered how such a small body could house an endless bitter blackhole of rage and spite.

Tom's character concept

Didn't manage to finish the comic in time for the Daddymort festival 2024 ( @daddymortfest ), but still working on the Dark Water AU (JP horror movie of 2002), where little Jamie moves in with his loner of a father (Harry), who's in danger of being stolen by a ghost 🥹🐍

These are Tom's key points:

✨ intense red eyes;

✨ pale skin with green-blue tint;

✨ sometimes soaked dripping hair sticking to forehead; dark veins showing through the skin (when agitated, angry, jealous);

✨ snake plushie as signature item mysteriously appearing here and there;

✨ has rbf syndrome (???) smug lil bean

✨ big Harry simp on the inside, giving him his plushie no matter if he wants it or not cut him some slack he's a little kid ghost with attachment issues

✨ has ghost form (creeping darkness, also white shape, inspired by Ito Junji's pretty boy ghost)

✨ taking Jamie as a rival
