π Dive into action this #EarthDay with @WeWard! π± Did you know? More than half of the world's #seagrass cover has vanished since 1977, with 7% disappearing annually - that's like losing a football field every 30 minutes! π± That's why we're leading the charge in fostering natural regeneration by restoring 100m2 of vital seagrass in Bagamoyo, Tanzania! Our collaboration with WeWard and @SOATanzania aims to combat #seagrassloss, a dire threat to marine ecosystems. π Seagrasses play a pivotal role in #carbonstorage, #oceanregulation, and #mitigatingacidification - it's time to revive them! π Through WeWard, your collected wards can ignite real change. π Every contribution counts towards revitalizing these underwater forests, securing a healthier planet for all. πΏπ§ #RestoreOurSeagrass #EarthDay2024 #WeWardForChange

Sharks are particularly vulnerable to fishing because they reproduce slowly. π¦ They: β’ Grow slowly and reach a very late maturity β for example the Greenland Shark can live ~400 years and reach sexual maturity at ~150 years! Many are killed before theyβve produced offspring. We are pleased to join over 200 local and international stakeholders in supporting to uphold the existing shark fishing ban in the Maldives. Sharks are fundamental key predators keeping the marine environment healthy. Sharks are example of natural perfection; they have existed for more than 450 million years, whereas the earliest tree, lived around 350 million years ago. Not only sharks are older than trees, but they are also one of the only animals to have survived four of the five mass extinctions β now, THIS IS IMPRESSIVE, considering also that humans existed for just 2 million years, and that we are currently destroying the Planet. Letβs learn the lesson, letβs save the sharks! Follow us in our Sharky Week, every day a post and a story. Share, comment and like to make our voice viral! What a stunning colors, donβt you think? π β Tridacnia or clams are bivalve mollusks with a secret. They do filter the seawater for catching plankton, but they also farm their own algae. The stunning colors are due to the unicellular algae mixed in their flesh. As clams expose the algae to the sun, the alge gives in return nutrients created from the photosintetic activity. What ifβ¦. we were able to do the same? Hey mum, I go sunbathing for a snacks! β A huge thanks to our guest photographer Roel Jansen @coldfrogcountry for this stunning picture. β β ====================== FOLLOW π @theoceancy π FOLLOW π @theoceancy π FOLLOW π @theoceancy π ====================== β π Turn On Post Notification π β #theoceancy ππ . . . . #savetheplanet #savetheocean #clam #clams (Γ Worldwide) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMwwd7NhxMw/?igshid=rxqtp69rzbh7

Dancing with mantas! π β One of the best show to be seen underwater is the feeding barrel rolling technique of manta rays (Mobula alfredi) They use to barrel roll to maximize the intake of plankton filtered from the seawater ππ A huge thanks to our guest photographer Eric de Vicente @ericdevicente for this stunning picture. β β ====================== FOLLOW π @theoceancy π FOLLOW π @theoceancy π FOLLOW π @theoceancy π ====================== β π Turn On Post Notification π β #theoceancy ππ . . . #mantaray #mantarays #mantarayphotography (Γ Worldwide) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMpGuUVB7PX/?igshid=10hbthlpfew3x

Taxi-Shark π¦ β This is when a predator has become a means of transportation. Here, the Remora (or Suckerfish, genus: Echeneis) is attached to the belly of a shark. They have found the way to be transported effortless, to be protected (I mean, thatβs a shark) and to eventually eat (well, food scraps, parasites or skin from their host). How does it work? They have a sucker on their head which is used to be comfortably attached to their preferred taxi. ππ A huge thanks to our guest photographer Eric de Vicente @ericdevicente for this wonderful picture. β β ====================== FOLLOW π @theoceancy π FOLLOW π @theoceancy π FOLLOW π @theoceancy π ====================== β π Turn On Post Notification π β #theoceancy ππ #shark #sharkdiving #savetheocean (Γ Worldwide) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMhMWKiBiTR/?igshid=fjch9zswq38t

Make the difference in 90 seconds! πͺ Read this! π Local communities are at the forefront of the fight against climate change and they are the first to suffer from its consequences. Thatβs why we are starting a collaboration with @baokalo, a community by the local residents of Velidhoo Island, in the Maldives π²π», who have recently started a long-term project for the restoration of their reef. In order to achieve this, they need materials, equipment, as well as training in marine sciences. Their dream became our dream, and our common journey has started. πͺ π We have created a video to rise donations and support our activities. We need your help! It will take 5-10min of your time on the day of the event, the 9th of March at 13h40 CET time. The istructions are simple and will be shared the day of the event on a whatsapp group. You can join this group by using the following link: πhttps://chat.whatsapp.com/BBcboKwuoR5FvdfuABvBO0 The group will be silenced (so you don't risk to be spammed), only the admin will be able to write in. One sea turtle every two π β A recent study from Queensland University highlighted how more than 50% of all sea turtles eat marine debris, and especially plastics, at least once in their life. Turtles who plastics can immediately die of suffocation, but sometimes plastic bags fill their stomach causing a long death for starvation. Abandoned fishing lines, ropes and nets are also a serious threat as they can trap andΒ harm sea turtles long after having been lost by fishermen.Β β We need to change our lifestyle and we cannot wait anymore. We all need to do our part.
