The Market
Last weekend I spent that day with Ari and we walked around Lusaka taking photos of this beautiful city. It's hard to share experiences and what life is like the way that we see it. So we decided to spend a day trying to capture what the city looks like to us - not just in one area, but all over the city. I believe we tracked about 17,000 steps that day. And from what Aunty Rachel says, an active day for any person is about 9,000 steps. So think about that for a second. LOL. It doesn't include the taxi rides that we needed to take to get to the locations that we wanted to capture...
Ok... moving on.
So when we went to the market. I didn't think it was appropriate to just pull out the camera and start taking some shots. I think it would be best to visit it a couple times, shop, enjoy the people and the vibes of such a diverse place. I think if I go there often enough for some to recognize me, I wouldn't feel like a total tourist ass coming and thinking I have a right to take photos. It's not fair to the people or the place... Quick side note though, I bought a beautiful pink Chitenge fabric that I am going to use to make my moms something. I have to get their sizes and measurements though before I follow through with that idea. I would love to get them some beautiful dresses made. I honestly love the way that they make traditional clothing. I am looking forward to that, too.
It's nearly impossible to walk around the market with out people on your tail convincing you to go to their pop-up. But, I understand it and I'm okay with it. For some people, they just want to make an honest day's pay. Some day's its better than others and you do what you have to. So, I kindly decline unless I find something that I want to gift someone back home, or something I want to have for myself. Which also can be hard, because you go to one pop-up and you've seen them all.. So how do you decide to pick and choose. I try to buy a little thing here, and a little thing there when I do plan on spending.
This one gentleman was trying to convince me to go buy some dress pants - which I really do NOT need at this moment.... He was quite funny and charming. He called the pants "slacks," which I can honestly say I've never heard anyone refer to dress pants like that. So it was funny trying to understand what he was talking about - because he just kind of followed me as I walked through the market trying to get me to go back to where his items we're. We talked back and forth for about 2 solid minutes trying to understand each other. hahaa... He was persistent and I just told him, 'They don't make dress pants here big enough for someone like me,' to which we both laughed. He comes back with, "Madame, I promise you that I have exactly what you're looking for ** looks at me from head to toe, then looks at my waist** Madame, you look like your curves fit a 14." hahahahahahaha I laughed so hard, it was awesome. I have never had someone look at me like that and then guess my size. (although, I am not a 14.. lol I was an 16/18 coming to Zambia, but my clothes are fitting a little baggy right now.. so possible. LOL).. I love this place. I love Zambia.

I had the absolute pleasure of going to Lilayi Lodge - Elephant Nursery... Lilayi dedicates their time to rehabilitate these amazing and beautiful creatures so that they are able to go back into the wild when they are mature and old enough. Second to humans, they have the longest “childhood.” It takes them about 10-15 years to mature... I am so in love with elephants and so thankful I had this amazing experience to learn more about my favourite animal! ♥️

Mama Hilary
While I was away in Petauke, Mama Hilary was in Lusaka the entire time with the rest of the interns. Although, I only got to spend a week with her in Lusaka before she left back to Canada it was lovely.. She is truly something else. I believe that she works way too hard - my personal opinion. BUT, It's nice having her around and even when she is not around. She is STILL managing to control our lives in Lusaka being all the way in Canada.. Daily text reminders to drink water and eat veggies.. Daily reminders no headphones while walking to and from work. You would think, "as if you'd need reminders"... weeelllll.. apparently some of us actually do need them.. haha... She'll give us things to read and do while bored. She just knows-all... Which is why I call her mama Hilary.. I think the other interns have a inside joke and call her BIG mama Hilary... It's funny to me, because she is the cutest, shortest and most petite person in our whole group.. hahaha and to have earned such a name as Big Mama Hilary. Its pretty comical..  Her presence throughout this journey in Zambia has become necessary.. I am thankful for her, she is an ear when I need it.. Because sometimes, even though I want nothing more than to vent to the people back home and talk to them about how I am feeling out here. Its just not the same.. They can not relate to anything here, and that's fair. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to that understand the emotions that you are going through. And that my friends, is why I am so thankful to have Hilary around... Because even though I try to relate the things I may be feeling here. My relatives back home just don't get it... It's hard to talk them about life here... Talking about whether these bites on my legs are weird mosquito bites or bed bugs (rest assured, they are NOT bed bugs, but in fact devil mosquito bites LOL that bruise). Or do's and don't's according to the culture. For this, and many other things. I am grateful to have Hilary around...
PS. While on her way back to Canada, there were other interns (NOT with VIDEA), that she had met on the flight... By the end of their time with her, they start calling her Mama Hilary too. In that short time, she was ALSO bossing them around to drink more water... hahah She admitted she has a problem & I am genuinely happy for her, because that is the first step to recovery. #walkingtheredroad hahah I think the term is "red road" ...
