Hayley smiled at Elijah before looking back down at the little girl in her arms. How could something so perfect come from her? She would never say it out loud because she knew what the wonderful man beside her would say. However, it just stayed in her mind as she touched the little cheeks and the little nose. Her heart was so full of love. She would never get this again, but this one perfect little being was worth it all.
She wasn’t one to cry, and tears were starting to line in her eyes. She swallowed as she fought back the tears and she looked back at Elijah after he talked to their little one. She grinned before leaning in and kissing him softly. “I’m sorry if I scared you. I wanted to make sure she made it before me, you know?” She said and bit her lip. “She’s so beautiful.” She sniffled and looked back down. “We made the truly perfect thing in this crazy world we live in.” She grinned and let the tears go down her cheeks.
Elijah wasn’t sure where to focus his attention. The baby in Hayley’s arms was absolute perfection and the interaction between mother and daughter made him watch in awe, not wanting to interrupt such a perfect moment. He brushed the tears that fell onto her cheeks which caused him to be caught off guard when she pressed a kiss to his lips, but he returned the gesture with as much sweetness as he could possibly muster.
The desire was there and he was sure it would always be there, but it was topped with something else, something new. A devotion, mixed with the will to protect what he held in his arms to the ends of the earth. He knew in that moment that he would do anything for her. Anything and everything. “She is and so are you, Hayley. I can’t believe I deserve you. That I deserve this.” He pressed another kiss to her lips. “This is all that matters now. Me, you, her. This is it. Just us. And as soon as you’re healed and you’ve rested. We’re leaving New Orleans and we’re going to start our lives. How does that sound?”

She felt him touching her and staying close as she moved around the room and eventually changed out of the clothes she was wearing; thanks to Rebekah. Hayley knew Elijah was nervous about her being up and about after being out for so long. She wasn’t sure if she should be up herself, but she felt fine. She finished getting into the outfit Rebekah brought, something she really wouldn’t wear herself after giving birth, and could hear Freya coming.
She only had Elijah’s words so far to fill he head with what their daughter was and she got nervous and she moved quickly to the other Mikaelson sister and looked down at her baby girl. Her breath was gone, but the light of her life was in this little girl. She took her instantly as Freya passed Lily and she held her as careful as she could. Her heart was just melting for her.
“Hello, baby girl. I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you for the first hours of your life, but I’m sure everyone took great care of you.” Hayley said softly and she turned to look at Elijah. “She’s so little and perfect.” She told him and moved closer. This was her family and it made her happier than anything ever did in her life.
Hayley never wanted to let Lily go. She rocked her gently and touched the little girl’s cheek. She was so lost into her daughter that she didn’t notice the two Mikaelson sisters leave to give them some time together. She finally looked at Elijah and smiled at him. “Have you held her?” She asked him and held the little one’s hand.
This was an image that was going to be ingrained in his mind for the next thousand years, of that he was sure. Elijah had spent the last few months watching how fierce and strong Hayley was and although the way she held Lily was gentle and soft, he’d never seen her more strong. He nearly cried at the interaction, keeping his hand on her back as a way to support not only her but himself.
In his thousand year existence, he couldn’t remember a time he felt so weak or inadequate, but in the best ways possible. Because now he knew the meaning of unconditional love. There has never been and there never would be someone he would love or want to protect more than that little girl. Which was a far cry from what he felt a few hours ago. And of course, it was Hayley who brought him to that place with one moment.
Her question caught him off guard and he was almost embarrassed. Elijah couldn’t form the words but he did sit on the edge next to where Hayley sat on the bed. “Not yet.” With one arm completely wrapped around her back, he used his other hand to place a finger in the palm of the baby’s - of Lily’s hand. “This is...” he was so overwhelmed. “This is our little girl.” He then turned his attention to the bright eyes that was shining up at him. “Hi baby girl. Hi Lily. Welcome to the world.”

Even before Elijah’s blood entered her body, Hayley had begun healing thanks to her daughter; however, it did seem to help. Her heart restarted, color came back to her skin, and she was breathing. It took some time, but soon she had regained consciousness and could hear Elijah beside her, but also her daughter in the distance.
By coincidence, her eyes opened as Elijah spoke and smiled as she reached up and touched his face. “I’m awake. I’m fine.” She assured him softly before she gave a soft kiss to his lips. It was a quick kiss, though, as she then sat up and looked around her at the blood and mess, but chose not to focus on it. She had other thing she wanted to do first. Someone she wanted to see. She stood up and went to where her clothes were to change into something that didn’t feel disgusting before she looked at Elijah.
“Where’s Lily? I want to see here.”
The hours passed by agonizingly slow but he would have waited there for days for her to come back to him. As if it was on queue, her eyes opened at his request and he rushed forward, touching his hand to her face. He leaned into the kiss, his entire body relaxing at the contact. At her question. Elijah suddenly felt extremely guilty and selfish for not checking in on his little girl with Freya even though she assured him she was fine. He stood up and followed Hayley, keeping his hand on her lower back as she moved around the room.
“Rebekah. Freya.” He called out before turning back to Hayley.
“Lily is fine,” he assured her with a smile. “She’d healthy and alive and so beautiful.” For the first time since Hayley went into labor, he allowed the hope and the happiness take over. Both of his girls were alike and okay.
First came Rebekah with her speed to bring Hayley clothes so she could change. Then a few moments later, Freya came in with the baby bundled up, rocking her and soothing her with melodic humming. Elijah had yet to hold her, but he could wait. He knew Hayley needed to see her first.
“Here’s your perfect little girl,” Freya said with a bright smile before pushing the bundle into the other woman’s arms.

littlewolfhayls:
Something was right; Hayley knew that for sure. She felt weaker than she had since before she turned and cold. She hadn’t been cold in so long, but she felt it. She was shivering here and there between her body tensing up with each contraction. She could tell with the question coming from Elijah and the looks Freya and Rebekah were giving each other that they knew something wasn’t quite right either. Everyone in the room could prepare for a normal human birth, but a vampire-werewolf hybrid was harder to get ready for.
“I have no idea.” Freya’s voice spoke through the room. “She is ready to push if she has the strength.” The girl said as they all tried to focus on helping Hayley through this. She had to do this. She wanted to have her baby and she wanted to hold her. Rebekah gave her a sip of water and she took a deep, long breath in as she looked over at Elijah for any sign that there was a sliver of hope in the middle of this. With him sitting next to her, she would be fine. And if something happened to her, the people in the room would ensure her daughter would be raised with a family.
Hayley swallowed and mustered enough energy to do this; even if it was the last thing she ever did. “I’m ready.” She said in a unnaturally low voice for the little wolf. Rebekah helped get her legs in the right position for Freya to be able to see and girls started coaching Hayley through every contraction and every push. It seemed like this was the part lasting forever now. The hours that passed before this was starting to feel like nothing as she made slow, but steady progress to delivering their child.
The pain through delivery increased for her, but she didn’t fight it. She didn’t try to hide it with screams and groans here and there, but she did not let it get to her. She knew the reward of it and she was ready. The worried looks on Rebekah and Freya’s faces didn’t make her falter either. She wasn’t sure how much time had passed now, but she felt like it had been days. The color of her skin wasn’t coming back to what it should be as she continued to just push their child out of her body. Finally, with one great push, the baby girl was suddenly in Freya’s arms and brought to Hayley’s chest. Happiness filled her as she looked at her daughter and she gently held her in her arms, even as she was filling weaker by the second. A kiss to the baby’s head and a look to Elijah was the last thing she did before her body went limp; her eyes closing and everything stopping.
If Elijah’s heart could beat, it would have been beating out of his chest. He couldn’t remember the last time he was this anxious. Looking to his sisters with a worried expression, he tightened the grip on Hayley’s hand. Her skin lost color with every passing moment and it was as if the very life was being drained from her. For as much as Elijah wanted this child, there was nothing in the world that could replace Hayley. This was a thought that would remain in the darkest places of his mind, that no matter how beautiful and loving his child was, she wasn’t worth losing Hayley over. Elijah pushed the thoughts back into the corners of his mind, letting her words of readiness pull his focus back onto her.
The grasp on his hand intensified and he needed to remind himself to be cautious with his grip. With every scream and push from Hayley, he moved closer to her, until he was standing so that he was practically flush against her. Elijah pressed his forehead against hers, the sweat on her brow dripping down his face, but she still felt cold as ice. His mind went to the worst possible thoughts and while Freya and Rebekah tried their best to make sure the baby was delivered, Elijah focused on supporting Hayley the best he could.
It wasn’t the call from his sisters that got his attention, but one sharp cry from the baby. It was ear piercing and cause him to jerk back and turn his head towards the source of the cry. Elijah was awestruck. There on Hayley’s chest was the vision of perfection. She was covered in blood and still screaming but the second Hayley’s lips touched the baby’s crown, she was soothed and Elijah felt himself falling in love in seconds.
There wasn’t enough time to bask in the happiness and feeling of content that they were blessed with for that moment. Before he knew it, her eyes were closed and her body went limp. He caught the baby before anything could happen, but he handed her off to Freya immediately. “Hayley... HAYLEY!” Elijah was frantic as he tried to shake her awake. Rebekah was right across from him, doing the same and he wouldn’t let up until his sister was checking her pulse and shaking her head. Hayley was bleeding out and he could feel the life leaving her. But he couldn’t lose her. Elijah refused. Without thinking, he ripped a hole into his wrist and held it to Hayley’s mouth. Perhaps this was selfish. Elijah knew how much she hated vampires. But he wasn’t going to just sit there and watch her die. She was probably going to hate him and it was possible she would never forgive him for this, but all of that would be worth just knowing she was still alive.
Hours later, Freya had taken the baby out of the room to take care of her and Rebekah had cleaned up Hayley. But all Elijah could do was sit by her side and wait. He hoped and prayed she would wake up, that he wasn’t too late.
“Hayley.... please wake up.”

Hayley barely had time to start to panic about what was going on before Elijah scooped her up and took off towards their new home. She was on the bed that was supposed to be hers and looked up at Elijah with slight amusement now as she breathed through a contraction. It was a little less painful than the ones she had throughout the day, but still it was pretty consistent length wise. She watched as Rebekah appeared and then Freya too and she was thankful Klaus was no where near the room. Even if she was getting along better with him, she did not want him near her while she was in labor and about to give birth to her daughter.
As Elijah spoke, she looked at him and squeezed his hand. “Elijah, breathe.” She told him as she could tell he was a little more panicked than she was at the moment. “I know I’m fine.” She assured him and smiled happily. “However, I would like to get out of these clothes and to something not wet.” She said and Freya took control of that as she helped her up and took care of her getting into a more comfortable dress Rebekah got her for the moment. It wasn’t something she would’ve chosen, but she let Rebekah do what she wanted. She soon laid back down and tried getting comfortable in the bed.
Hours passed and things seemed to be moving slowly; which was causing her to get a little agitated. Hayley’s pain level was high and she just wanted the baby out of her. Every contraction was intense and painful and she would grip Elijah’s hand as hard as she possibly could between crying to Freya if she was close to the ten centimeters yet. She wanted this over with now.
It wasn’t until Hayley was urging him to breathe and to calm down that he realized how foolish he was reacting. Though he wasn’t going to apologize for being overbearing. He looked up at Rebekah and Freya who were smirking and he returned the Mikaelson smirk with the shake of his head. He released Hayley’s hand and stood back while his sisters went on to make sure Hayley was as comfortable as possible. He could sense his brother leaving the house and thought that it was the best course of action.
Elijah pulled the chair from the desk and moved it so he could sit right next to the mother of his child. He tried to present himself in a more relaxed way, for the sake of the present company, but inside there was a war raging. This was something he’d never encountered before - a vampire procreating, and as far as he knew, there were a plethora of things that could go wrong.
As the hours passed, he remained by her side, holding her hand through every contraction and his sisters did the same, which he appreciated more than he could ever express. Elijah watched Hayley intently and the closer they got to delivery it worried him how the color seemed to be draining from her skin. He didn’t remember reading about this in the books about child birth he’d been consuming over the past few months, but then again there weren’t books available for supernatural child birth. “Is this normal, Freya?” He asked holding up the hand that was a pale gray.

littlewolfhayls:
For Hayley, staying in New Orleans took some getting used to. She wasn’t used to staying in one place once a little trouble found her way, but with Elijah’s family being there and her getting closer and closer to her due date, it seemed logical for them to stay at the compound with them. As time passed, a nursery was designed with Rebekah’s help and suddenly, Hayley felt like she was at home. It was comforting and a new feeling for her to call a place home, but it was nice as well. And, as a shock to herself, she was actually getting along with Klaus for the most part which, in the end, was going to be something good for once the baby was here.
Speaking of, she was bigger than she ever thought she was going to be while pregnant and getting restless. She cleaned the nursery several times and made sure everything was perfect. Then she loved going on walks and even more that Elijah insisted that he go with. Hayley knew he was worried about her, especially because she wasn’t supposed to push it while she was this close to giving birth. That day, though, she felt like she needed it more than anything. She wanted to walk. She needed to walk. She felt pain in her back all morning and it just kept getting worse. She had been trying to hide it from everyone, but as they went through the square, she stopped and gripped Elijah’s hand as she touched her hardening stomach while she held in a groan. She heard her name being spoken and once the pain passed, she looked into his eyes. “I’m fine.” She lied. “It’s just…” She paused as she felt something pop and she looked down as her water broke. “Well, now I guess I’m in labor.” She said as she looked up into his eyes.
Elijah knew better than questioning her, but as soon as the clear liquid drenched the insides of her legs and the concrete below her, he already knew before her words followed. He had gone over what he would need to do in this moment his mind over and over again, but once Hayley said the words, he was stunned for a moment before springing into action. He looked around to make sure they were in the clear before pulling her into his arms and whisking her away to the compound. Adrenaline took over and his heart was beating rapidly against his chest. He took her into her bedroom, a room that was essentially a spare room since she’s been sleeping with him in his room, but was connected to the nursery so it felt like the logical place.
Before he could even call for her Rebekah was by his side, calling Freya who had taken it upon herself to become Hayley’s midwife. Rebekah needed to use all of her strength to move Elijah out of the way so Freya could get to work. But he remained by Hayley’s side, holding her hand and pressing a kiss to her forehead. Klaus was nowhere to be found, but that was to be expected and it was the least of his worries at the moment. “Freya is going to take good care of you. Rebekah is here. I’m here. You’re okay.”

→ It’s Time
It seemed as though things were starting to settle into place. The compound and more importantly, New Orleans, was once again starting to feel like home for the original once again. It had been days since Elijah and Klaus’ last argument and even Rebekah was complaining less than usual. But perhaps that had more to do with the fact that her and Marcel had found another once again. Spring was fast approaching, which meant the weather was starting to become warmer. Not that the cold bothered Elijah, but it was more bearable for Hayley, and that mattered to him more than anything. He worried about her doing too much and the books did say that as she approached her due date, she needed to stay off of her feet, but he could tell that she was starting to become restless so he thought that a walk around the city would do her some good.
The stipulation for letting her go out was that she would allow him to support her by linking their arms together and promising that at the first sign of fatigue she would allow him to whisk her back to the compound. After about an hour of walking in the cool breeze, he decided that perhaps he needed this as much as she did. He sighed contently and lead her through the town square. When he felt a pull on his arm he turned towards her ready to comment about how proud he was that she was being mindful of how much she could take, but the look on her face told him that it was something different. “Hayley?”

Hayley kissed him back and kept herself pressed against him. At his words, she smiled and felt better about what had happened, but also like a fool for thinking he would leave her. She swallowed as she looked into his eyes and touched his cheek softly for a moment. “I’m sorry I doubted you.” The girl said softly to him.
She let Elijah lay her back by him as he laid down and she took hold of his arm to keep him holding her close. She smiled softly as he spoke and nodded. “I’m more than sure. You are my family. I’ve never had that before, and I’m not giving that up now.” She told him and closed her eyes. “I love you, Elijah.”
“Sh sh sh. No apologies needed.” He was ready to move on from this and really start making strides towards the future they were trying to build together. If Elijah’s heart was still beating, it would have sped up immensely at Hayley’s words. He’s always had a family but it never felt this way. He never felt so connected, so attached to one person - or perhaps in this situation, it was two. “I love you, Hayley. More than you will ever know.”

Hayley kissed him back and put more passion and love into the kiss than she initially meant to. She needed this more than words could express and it felt needed out of the exhausting day they both had. They were both coming into this room thinking that it was going to be the end of them, and now it was more assurance that they made it through and were fighting to be with each other. For the first time in her life, she wasn’t being left and she wasn’t doing the leaving.
“I do.” She told him softly. “I should’ve trusted you and I shouldn’t have thought you were going to leave.” She gently touched his cheek and looked into his eyes. “And you’re sure that you want to spend eternity with me?” She smiled softly and gently bit her lip.
Elijah pressed his lips against hers one more. Not only because he needed to feel as much of her as physically possible, but because he wanted to cut off her words of doubt. “I’ve never been more sure than anything in my entire thousand years of walking this earth.” And Elijah meant it. Klaus and New Orleans and all of his exes combined couldn’t change his mind.
While he feared that Aya potentially ruined everything he was trying to build with Hayley, he was starting to realize that perhaps she was the push he needed to really admit his true feelings and for Hayley to do the same. Standing up, he moved to lay in the bed, pulling her back to lay with him as he spooned her from behind. “It’s me and you until the end. Are you sure you’re ready for that?” He asked with a chuckle as he pressed a kiss to her ear.

Even with his hand guiding her to look into his eyes, she focused on anything but his eyes for a moment. Her heart was aching and she almost didn’t want to hear what he was going to say. It was hard enough being like this with him when something inside her was telling her that this was the end. However, she finally looked at him and she felt tears build up in her eyes. Hayley hated crying, but right now she couldn’t help the tears that were now going down her cheeks as he talked to her.
The second their foreheads touched, she closed her eyes and let herself calm with his touch and just focusing on what he said. Her fears and hormones made all of this seem so extreme and she hated what it was doing to herself and her relationship. “And I’m yours.” She said softly before opening her eyes and focusing on his again. “You took so long. I didn’t know if you were coming back. And if you did, I didn’t know what you were going to say. I prepared myself for the worst and for the first time I waited to see if you would prove me wrong unlike everyone who didn’t in the past.” She took a deep breath and touched his cheek. “I’m sorry, Elijah. I should’ve known better.”
As he fought to captivate her attention, he could hear the panic inside of her, how her heart was racing rapidly against her chest and how her blood was racing through her veins. As he said the words he could feel the skipped heart beat and he wondered if he was entirely too late, that she’d decided she was better off without him and she was probably right. But Elijah was a selfish man and he wouldn’t let her go that easily. Still clutching her hands in his, he waited for the response and even though he didn’t need to breathe, he held his breath until she returned his words.
Physically relaxing, he pressed his lips against hers, hand moving from her stomach to cup the back of her neck as he pulled her towards him. When he finally pulled back, a smile had visibly spread across his face. “You don’t have anything to apologize for, Hayley.” He shook his head, standing up to sit next to her on the bed before pressing his forehead against hers once more. “You have to understand, no one has or ever will ever mean to me what you do. I’m a man of my word, Hayley, and when I say always and forever, I mean it.”

littlewolfhayls:
Night had come and Hayley watched the streets of the Quarter on the balcony. She wondered, while she soothed the kicking child inside her, if he had left with Aya. Maybe that’s what was going to be for the best for them and their baby. She could go off somewhere safe and raise her better than how she was raised. She sighed as she turned around and was going to go inside when Elijah came bursting in the room and called her name.
She took a moment before going in, turning on the light, and looking at him. “Have a good time? You’re back late.” She said calmly before going the bed and sitting down. “I thought you left. I thought she convinced you I’m nothing to you. That we are.” She looked down at her baby bump before back up at him. She was hurting and she was worried about why he was there.
“If she has convinced you to go with her, or whatever, can you please not drag out a goodbye. I knew this was all going to be too good to be true. And it’s better now than when our child gets here. It’ll be easier for her.” She couldn’t look at him anymore. She was nervous about what was going to happen when he started talking.
His anxiety was just short of turning into a full-fledged panic attack when he was met with an empty bedroom, but it subsided as soon as she moved back into the room. The sudden brightness didn’t phase him as he moved forward, falling to his knees on the floor and wrapping both of her hands in his, searching her face for any sign of emotion. The pain was there and it struck him like a sharp knife. When she wouldn’t lock eyes with him, he moved one hand up to guide her chin so that he could catch her eyes, the other hand still steady on her hands.
“I could- would never leave you, Hayley. Once her gaze was secure, he moved his free hand down to sit on top of her belly. “There is nothing in the world, not an old ex, not my brother, that could keep me away from you.” Elijah had said these words before, but he needed her to believe him and he would continue saying them with both his words and actions until she believed him. Pushing himself up, his hands found purchase on either side of her face as he touched his forehead to hers. “I’m yours, Hayley Marshall. Always and forever.”

littlewolfhayls:
Hayley nodded as he spoke and turned around quickly to leave. She hated feeling like she was missing out on information, hated that she felt anger against him. Her heart was beating hard against her chest and the anger was getting the baby inside to kick and she rubbed the spot as she headed down the Quarter and back towards the Mikaelsons. She kept to herself as she finally got there and made her way to the kitchen.
She found no peace as she waited for Elijah to get home. After eating and settling their child, she went to her room to escape questions for Klaus and Rebekah and kept the door closed. Her thoughts were eating at her and she wasn’t sure what to do. The part of her that felt like this was where it ended for them was telling her that he was going to come back and end things. She was preparing for that. She couldn’t see anything else and the pregnancy hormones were making her start to cry.
Elijah watched as she stormed off. He knew what he needed to do, but it was so far from what he wanted to do, it was hard for him to pull his gaze away from where Hayley disappeared in the distance so he could refocus his attention on the woman that held his heart almost a thousand years ago. Still, he remained cordial, knowing that it was the only way to get out of this situation as fast as he possibly could.
The conversation took longer than he thought and by the time he was leaving the coffee shop, it was nightfall already. The walk down memory lane was a long one and he didn’t realize he’d forgotten so much over the years. He’d forgotten his promise to her and the way he abandoned her. He’d forgotten the bond they formed and the notions of forever they established. It was the reason he turned her in the first place. Aya tried to convince him that he was making the same mistakes all over again and that a baby wouldn’t change that, but he couldn’t believe that. He wouldn’t believe that.
He practically sprinted home, panic washing over him at the thought that he wouldn’t find her there by the time he for back. And it showed in the way he busted into her room. It was entirely out of character for him to enter without knocking, but he couldn’t stop the anxiety that flooded through him at Aya’s words. It scared him thinking that he and Hayley could end up like him and his ex, but he wouldn’t give into the fear. “Hayley?” He called out into the dark.

She didn’t know what was going on between the two of them, but she didn’t like it one bit. She was getting angry that he seemed to be lying to her again that there was nothing to catch up on. After all, they had been away from each other for a hundreds of years. And they weren’t exactly just friends either. That much she knew.
Hayley looked into Elijah’s eyes and took her hand from his. The anger inside her was boiling up and she wanted to go. “There is.” She ignored Aya and just focused on the father of her child. “It’s been 800 years.” She echoed the other girl. “Maybe you can tell her what I actually am to you, instead of you stumbling over trying to find the words. She seems to be able to say it just fine.” She took a stab at him with her words and she took a step back.
“Stay. Talk. Me and our child will be at the house with Klaus. I’d like to hear the story behind Aya from someone who won’t try to lie about details.”
The anger was evident in Hayley’s voice. He could hear the elevation in her heart beat and the adrenaline as her blood rushed through her veins. He really didn’t have anything to say to Aya, he wanted nothing more than to follow Hayley home. But he also knew her and there would be no peace until he closed the chapter of his life that was Aya, even if he hadn’t even spared a thought to her in the past 800 years. Her words insinuating that he would lie to her stung but he felt like he deserved it.
“I won’t be long.” He wanted desperately to kiss her or grab her hand before she left, but he refrained, sensing the state of anger the mother of his child was in. “And know that I was not nor will I ever lie to you again. I will tell you everything myself when I get back home, I promise.”

littlewolfhayls:
Hayley was suddenly aware of how long Elijah had been alive. Of course she knew, but it didn’t feel as significant as it did now seeing someone he had known longer than anyone she knew. She stood straighter as she watched him as he dropped her hand to hug the girl before them. She felt a bit awkward standing there and lonely as well. A flight response was growing upon her, but she fought it as she stood next to Elijah.
As he introduced her to Aya, she focused on his words and it stung as he didn’t clarify what she was to him. Maybe she was nothing more than the woman having his child. It made her heart ache in a way she hadn’t felt in a long time and she didn’t like it. The thoughts escaped her as the woman took her hand and she shook it before taking it back.
“Well, it was nice to meet you. I’m sure you both have a lot to catch up on.” She looked up at Elijah. “Should I meet you at the house? Or are you going to be a while?” She tried to be polite, but the hurt inside her was there and it was coming out as anger.
There was a sense of disbelief that clouded Elijah’s mind. He never thought he’d see this woman again and to be running into her in a city thousands of miles away from he last seen her while he was walking hand in hand with the mother of his child was preposterous. He was still in shock, but that shock was quickly remedied at the sound of Hayley’s voice. He wrapped his hand around hers once more to show where his priorities were and shook his head.
“There’s absolutely nothing we need to catch up on.” He wasn’t lying completely. There were some unresolved issues there, but nothing that needed to be rehashed after 800 years and certainly nothing that was more important than Hayley. The anger in Hayley’s voice was evident and he wondered how much of it was actually hurt. One thing he was learning about Hayley was that she was headstrong and refused to let anyone see her as week or emotional.
“Oh, Elijah come now. After 800 years there’s certainly a lot for us discuss. Like your girlfriend said, she can meet you back at the house...”

Hayley had to admit that she was really liking New Orleans. The area they were residing in seemed to be a great place, and Elijah seemed really happy there; which was all that mattered to her. Besides, he was spending a lot of time doting on her and she was loving the time they re spending with each other. Plus, she was all about hearing how Elijah was when he was younger. The stories made her feel like he knew him better, which caused her to fall even more for him.
It was a different place for them here. They were holding hands and showing their love for each other. As her stomach grew, it seemed like they were all growing together more as a family. While she wouldn’t say she was close to Klaus, she appreciated how he was treating her. Everything was bright and cheery, but something inside Hayley was telling her that it was going to end.
She didn’t realize, however, that it would be one particular person that would take her happiness away. It was a nice morning as the couple made their wait to a coffee place Elijah wanted to take her to. She had her hand on her stomach as the little one inside moved about and a smile was on her face. Hearing Elijah’s name being said by some girl threw her off and she turned to look at him then the woman behind them. The fact he knew her made Hayley’s smile falter and she looked up at him; waiting to see if he’d introduce her. She was trying to not make assumptions of how they knew each other, but ideas were growing in her head.
Living as long as he has made it easy to Elijah to forget things that happened in the past. He’d met so many people in his life time and been through so much that it was impossible for him to remember everything or everybody. But this woman, standing there in all her pride was someone he would never forget. He offered her a smile, more genuine than the one she was giving him and for a moment, he was 200 years old again, in a small village in Europe.
The hand in his brought him back to the present and he released it to wrap his arms around the woman who interrupted his morning. It was an odd feeling, being reminded of something that once consumed your life completely, something that you’d forgotten about for hundreds of years that came rushing back with a simple smile and a hug. He brought their attention to the woman at his side, gesturing between the two women. “Aya, this is my... Hayley. Hayley, this is an old friend of mine. Aya.”
The older woman, took Hayley’s hand in hers, giving it a firm shake. “Don’t be so humble, Elijah. We were far more than friends.”

It seemed as though things were finally starting to fall in place. Elijah spent a lot of time tending to Hayley, not only because of her growing belly, but because after everything he’d put her through, he at least owed her that. The day after she first met Niklaus, he gave her a detailed tour of the compound, then of the French Quarter. She seemed to like the city he once resided in just fine which was a relief to him. Elijah didn’t realize how much he missed New Orleans until he was walking the streets again, telling Hayley the stories about him as a younger man.
It was like a weight had been lifted off of his shoulders. Elijah could walk with Hayley hand in hand down the street and not have to worry about hiding or worry about someone seeing him and that news getting back to his brother. Niklaus was being the perfect host and while Elijah still remained on guard, he was almost convinced that his brother had turned a new leaf. He wanted nothing more than to believe that they could finally have their happily ever after. And in what better city than New Orleans.
A few weeks of bliss just seemed like it was too good to be true. Elijah should have known better by now. It just seemed like another perfect morning, Elijah had taken Hayley to one of his favorite coffee shops but what they met there left Elijah speechless. As soon as he heard his name from behind, there was no need to turn around to see who was calling after him, even if it had been over 800 years since he’d heard that voice. With Hayley’s hand still in his, he turned his gaze to the woman behind him.
“Aya.”
