RiverClan Celebrations – Stories and Stones
Life as a RiverClan cat is idealized as one full of luxury and relaxation, and in times of peace, it can be just that. It is no secret to any cat or clan that the season RiverClan flourishes in the most is Greenleaf. While the rivers run freely and fish are in abundance, RiverClan rarely finds reason to struggle. Greenleaf moons are those of lounging and sunbathing, grooming each other’s pelts and telling tales.
In fact, RiverClan bears a traditional celebration set to occur at the start of each Greenleaf moon that highlights this lavish lifestyle. Set on Sunningrocks, RiverClan hosts a feast with exquisite spreads of prey. Though they tend to favor fish, RiverClan warriors prepare for this sort of “picnic” by gathering all kinds of food. Voles, frogs, crawfish, lizards, and even occasionally stray forest creatures that dash across the borders can be found among their typical variety of scaled food. Trying new flavors is always encouraged, here, as is eating as much as you possibly can.
From sun-up to sundown, RiverClan gathers across Sunningrocks, surrounded by prey, united in the shared sensation of a full stomach and a deep sense of contentedness. The food is not the only draw to this celebration, of course. For seasons, RiverClan has woven tales of their history, be they truthful or exaggerated, and to commemorate these long standing stories, they have taken to carving etchings onto the very stones that they laze upon. Sunningrocks is marked up and down in RiverClan clawmarks, delicate lines spindling together to convey many, many moons of RiverClan lore.
Of course, this tradition has not been carried out quite so smoothly, at least not consistently. Recent conflict with ThunderClan over the ownership of Sunningrocks has made it near impossible to guarantee the flat stones as a secure place to hold their feast. Although the stones are deeply significant to RiverClan, the water’s path has shifted as time has gone on, and ThunderClan seems sure they have a right to the ownership of the stones that hold records of RiverClan life.
The original dispute that caused debate over RiverClan’s right to the rocks was, in fact, a result of ThunderClan’s very own Greenleaf celebration. In ThunderClan’s Greenleaf Games, warriors are encouraged on the second day of celebration to hunt as much prey as they can manage. Cats who come up with lackluster hauls are sent away from the competition, dismissed to do nothing but cheer from the sidelines. The tale of the very first drop of blood shed upon Sunningrocks is one well recorded, the images woven onto the surface of the stones by RiverClan cats recounting the battle.
In a daring attempt to regain what they believed to be broken pride, a collection of ThunderClan cats who had been sent away from the Greenleaf Games on the second day happened across RiverClan enjoying the final hours of their feast. Eyes growing round at the sight of so much prey in one spot, the ThunderClan cats audaciously invaded, grabbing at and staking claim to RiverClan prey. They dashed away before they could be caught and truly punished, dragging their stolen goods back to their clan in the hopes that they would be hailed as heroes for bringing home such massive quantities of food after being pushed aside by their clan.
RiverClan knows not of what occurred within ThunderClan when the warriors returned with stolen prey. All they know is that before the season had shifted, ThunderClan’s leader had sent another patrol their way. Determined to recover from the potential disgrace of stealing prey directly on RiverClan land, ThunderClan shifted the story, declaring that Sunningrocks ought to belong to them anyway. The fight that followed that day was a brutal one, RiverClan being chased temporarily away from the stones that had housed them and their celebrations for seasons.
Eventually, RiverClan managed to reclaim them, but tensions on both side of the border made it difficult for any feast to be held on Sunningrocks without RiverClan suspecting a repeat of the attacks launched originally by ThunderClan. It was inevitable they would clash again, and when further fights broke out, RiverClan made the unfortunate decision to stop hosting their greenleaf celebrations upon Sunningrocks, sorrowfully settling for carving pebbles rather than massive swathes of stone each time the traditional feast came around.
Nowadays, RiverClan has adapted to feasting only once per greenleaf rather than three times in accordance with each moon. Though they have been searching for a new location that captures the same warmth and sentimentality held by Sunningrocks, they have yet to settle in any permanent spot. Resentment hangs heavy between RiverClan and ThunderClan as a result of this, and some of RiverClan’s most bitter cats have suggested that disturbing ThunderClan’s Greenleaf Games is only fair compensation for what was done to them.
At the beginning of this story, Sunningrocks is in RiverClan’s possession.

WindClan Celebrations – Wishes and Blooms
Celebration in WindClan is, quite simply, a constant sort of thing. WindClan cats announce each new birth with glee, celebrate the passing of a cat’s years with enthusiasm, and when a WindClan cat passes away, they host mourning sessions that are meant to be bright rather than bitter and full of sorrow. Of course, WindClan does not dictate the way a cat may mourn, but rather encourages a celebration of a life lived rather than sulking in misery. Cats who strike out against this are not shamed but may be gently guided back towards what WindClan believes is a more productive way of grieving.
With regards to a notable celebration, though, WindClan practices a unique sort of ceremony meant to center around the clan’s youngest cats. This is held frequently, carried out when a kitten reaches three moons of age, and is often one of the happiest memories in a kit’s life. To acknowledge the growth a kit is making while still imbuing them with a sense of wonder, WindClan queens will gather their litters in the nursery, the single den within camp that is not exposed to the elements, and secretly, the rest of the clan will crowd nearby. As the queens prompt the kittens to whisper wishes into their ears, WindClan warriors lean in close, too. Whatever wish a kit makes, the clan will attempt to grant. Of course, not everything is feasible, especially not overnight. Some kits may wish to become leader of the clan – to fulfil this, WindClan may occasionally let them play at being “leader” for a day, ordering each cat around as they please – while others wish for intangible things.
Still, any wish that can be granted will be. If a kit wishes for the chance to adventure outside of camp, a trusted patrol of warriors will take them on a small journey. If they wish to bear a certain suffix as a warrior, WindClan’s leader will do their best to make it true when the time comes. A great amount of secrecy is invested on behalf of the warriors who grant the wishes, and though kits will grow up and become warriors themselves, aware that the grand experiences of their kithood were orchestrated, WindClan sees this tradition as something every kitten should have the chance to experience and takes it quite seriously.
In the spirit of wishes granted to kittens, warriors will occasionally wish upon stars that dapple Silverpelt. Usually, they do not call upon her for help unless they truly feel that they need it, but a warrior desperate for guidance, help, or a blessing of their own may look to the sky above, remembering the wishes from their kithood, and hope to have them replicated in a more meaningful form.
Another form of celebration occurs in WindClan when newleaf arrives. As the fields and moors bloom with new life, WindClan warriors will work together to gather flowers with which they will decorate their camp. Should excess flowers be gathered, WindClan warriors will dry and press any plants without healing qualities and carry them to the next Gathering to be held, dishing them out among warriors of opposing clans as a way of spreading newleaf cheer. Though this is a far more simple process, it is one that WindClan never neglects.

ShadowClan Celebrations – Palepelt’s Night
In stark contrast with the other clans, ShadowClan’s tendency to celebrate often comes with more subtlety than outright cheer or grand displays of power. For a clan that frequently struggles to make ends meet, resorting to scavenging for food to survive in their difficult home, acknowledging their constant fight for a safe and secure life is something more valuable than gallivanting their most capable cats like ThunderClan does, or coating their camp in a blinding array of flowers like WindClan might. Instead, ShadowClan’s major holiday comes in the form of a clan-wide connection formed on the most difficult night of the year.
During leafbare when the weather is brutal and prey is scarce, the daylight grows brief and ShadowClan is left with even less time to hunt. Although they do not have the same proximity to a twolegplace bearing a wealth of resources as ThunderClan does, these cats are not above crossing borders or skirting around the outside of another clan’s territory for the sake of going to scavenge from whatever location they might find. ShadowClan’s consistent struggle is a part of the reason they bolster the most rogues, loners, and outsiders in their ranks. More paws might mean more mouths to feed, but it also means more cats working toward a shared goal.
Still, even with every attempt made, ShadowClan is no stranger to harsh realities during the coldest season of the year. Instead of bemoaning it, however, they boast a tradition meant to acknowledge how cruel it can be, and in fact, they believe that their tradition helps ward off any further cruelties. If they can come together and survive the night known in twoleg speak as the Winter Solstice, called Palepelt’s Night in clan terms, then they will have appeased the seasons and will survive the duration of leafbare as well as the rest of the year in comfort.
Usually, WindClan are the cats declared superstitious or overtly religious, but kept private within the ranks of ShadowClan are their own unique beliefs and superstitions. They often view figures like Silverpelt or stories of StarClan in a more mysterious sense than WindClan does, however, even going as far as seeing Silverpelt as a trickster. In ShadowClan stories spoken to their young, tales of Silverpelt’s tendencies to take on different coats according to the atmosphere of the world run rampant. In this sense, she becomes Palepelt during leafbare, snow white and ready to prey upon any cats not careful enough to tend to their needs, keep their paws and ears warm, and ward off the chill of the season. Silverpelt may take on many different names in ShadowClan stories and lore, but for the sake of their leafbare celebration, she is a figure of danger, a poor omen, a cat every kit fears they might one day meet.
To preface Palepelt’s Night, the clan prepares prey for the conclusion by hunting and scavenging as much as they can find. Each cat eats before the night begins, and the prey that remains is buried in frozen ground to keep it useable. Then, ShadowClan gathers in the open clearing to acknowledge the hardships they have faced as of late. Any recently deceased have their names spoken into the frosty air, and then ShadowClan huddles close together. Typically, an elder will be responsible for speaking words to ward off Palepelt, usually in the form of a poem. If an elder is not present, the clan’s healer will take over. Once they have concluded, the clan must settle in for a night of immense difficulty.
To begin with, ShadowClan’s most vulnerable lives are placed at the center of the clearing. This often includes kits, cats bearing illnesses, and elders sensitive to the cold. Once they are curled up, the rest of the clan gathers in a circular, radiating formation outside of them, each layer building upon the next. The strongest of the clan, always including its leader, must sleep on the outer ring of the circle, bearing the brunt of leafbare’s icy grasp. Those in the center are the most sheltered, but even they are not immune to the harshness of this night. Together, ShadowClan prepares to sleep through the night.
In the morning when they wake, kittens and queens are sent immediately back to the nursery to be warmed. Elders may retire to their dens, and apprentices are permitted to curl up inside of their own nests. Warriors, however, must continue the night by waking in the daytime and beginning a self imposed fasting period of a singular day. In this time, they are expected to at least attempt to hunt for their clan, though failure of any kind will not lead to a punishment. Once the day concludes, warriors are permitted to break their fast, digging up the remaining frozen prey from the beginning of Palepelt’s Night. Although it is not a pleasant meal, it is enough to allow them to get by, and ShadowClan values survival more than anything. This tradition is meant to drive home their values, showing that a cat can endure quite a bit before they might give up or give in.
After Palepelt’s Night concludes, ShadowClan is more prone to lighthearted behaviors, believing that the worst of the worst is over. Together they may survive and endure, and if they were to separate, they would surely fall apart.

ThunderClan Celebrations – Greenleaf Games
For ThunderClan cats, community is important, but competition is even more so. ThunderClan warriors strive to be the best they can be via frequent and friendly competition with their clanmates, and the culmination of this attitude manifests when the seasons change and Greenleaf is greeted by the forest dwelling clan of cats.
Greenleaf brings with it sweltering heat, a surplus of prey, and days that would be spent by other cats curled up in a sun spot, enjoying hours of relaxation. In ThunderClan, however, Greenleaf offers the perfect opportunity to host their annual series of competitions, titled Greenleaf Games. This series of challenges is set out and organized each year by ThunderClan’s leader. It is a task that brings great joy, and an eager leader might find pleasure in setting up each year’s competition to be even more difficult than the last. Participants, for the most part, are made up of the clan’s warriors. However, a “practice” bracket of competitions does exist for apprentices to hone their skills, sharpening them in preparation for when they will finally be able to join the fray themselves.
Traditionally, Greenleaf Games last for a duration of three full days and three full nights. Nighttime is meant to be spent sleeping, gathering rest for the coming competition time in daylight, but some persistent warriors will stay up through the evening practicing for what is to come. On each day, a different challenge is hosted. By the end of the three days, a “champion” is to be selected. This champion will serve ThunderClan for the remainder of the season cycle, becoming a vital part of clan life as they play a role in the assessment of apprentices and are often decreed as ThunderClan’s hero. Being proclaimed champion is nothing to scoff at, and frequently, a ThunderClan leader may choose to consult their champion in line with their senior warriors, deputy, and healer. It is also quite common for the champion to be named deputy, as ThunderClan deeply values the title.
The first challenge set in front of competitors is a race. Beginning at camp, warriors must race each other to the finish line set at the Tree-Cut Place. The first half of the group to complete the race will move onward, while the second half of the group who places afterwards will be disqualified, becoming a part of the observing crowd. The race is a game of stamina more than it is speed, as the distance travelled is quite considerable. Still, swift footed warriors often boast about how they may breeze past their clanmates in this portion.
The second challenge in the Greenleaf Games is a hunting competition. Although some cats might think it foolish to relentlessly scour the forest for prey, ThunderClan ignores concerns of overhunting for the sake of this competition. Cats are to be scored according to the quantity and quality of prey they bring back. Once decisions are made by the judging leader, another half of the competition group will be cut. Following the hunting competition, a feast is held for the remaining competitors as the sun sinks below the horizon. They will need full stomachs to bolster their strength for what comes next.
As per usual with ThunderClan, the most exciting moment is one that involves a battle. Therefore, the final competition is one in which competitors are stacked against one another, fighting in opposition until only one cat remains as the final and definite winner. The champion is then celebrated by their clan, doused in applause and occasionally décor that is made by the clan’s queens, kits, and elders.
ThunderClan views these games as more than games, of course, given the weight that their champion holds. It is a time of celebration, a time of good cheer, but more than anything it is an opportunity for warriors to show off their skills, clawing their way to the top so that they may be acknowledged as ThunderClan’s most capable warrior.
Currently, ThunderClan’s champion is Tigerclaw.

RiverClan Naming Conventions
RiverClan is a group concerned with beauty, no matter how they try to deny the accusations of vanity thrown at them from across their watery borders. Appearance based prefixes are a priority, and a cat will rarely be named with room for difference in whatever their prefix represents. Color names are common here, especially those that draw comparisons to the hues of the river, and even more so, RiverClan is fond of names tied to their streams. Prefixes honoring weather phenomena, any form of water, shoreline objects, and fish are considered the most “appealing” ones a cat can bear.
In RiverClan, individuality means quite a lot to a cat, and though it is not unheard of for two warriors to share a suffix — there are, after all, only so many a cat can bear — RiverClan leaders do typically attempt to give each cat their own unique name. If two cats do bear the same suffix, they may become enveloped in trying to prove themselves superior to one another, leading to quite a bit of petty bickering that no one finds pleasant. Partially as a result of this, the clan tends to avoid legacy names, reluctant to give a kitten a prefix that already comes with the baggage of a relative or friend who came before them.
The most common names in RiverClan feature suffixes denoting skill in or affinity for water. Attachments such as -stream, -splash, -pool, or -shine are often utilized for RiverClan warriors.
A name that is appealing means more to a RiverClan cat than a name that is brutish and short like the common ThunderClan names meant to get straight to the point of a cat’s skills or the often unsavory ShadowClan names honoring their swampy, muddy territory. Names that are difficult to say, then, are rarely utilized in RiverClan, and they almost never host warriors whose prefix and suffix bear overlapping letters — Something like Mossstream would sound far too harsh for their tastes.
Of all the clans, RiverClan favors scar and injury names the least. In fact, they almost never utilize them. One exception comes in the form of their current leader, Crookedstar, whose name was adopted by the tom in his youth due to his mother’s insistence that his beautiful face had been ruined by an ugly crooked chin. Many cats are still uncomfortable with Crookedstar’s reclamation of his name, wishing he would have remained Stormkit and later Stormstar. Still, he is a pleasant leader, and his rule has been well received otherwise.

WindClan Naming Conventions
In WindClan, a name is quite the subjective thing. Because of WindClan’s connection to their ancestors and the traditional process of exchanging dreams with them before their graduation to warriorhood, many cats bear names given by parents who are honoring a portion of their dreams. If a cat is to chase a wren across the drafty moor in their StarClan given dream, they may choose to name their daughter Wrenkit, or their son Breezekit.
Intangible prefixes are much more common here than in other clans. You may hear prefixes such as wisp, echo, or song emerging from the cats of the fields. Also common are names honoring moorland animals and plant life.
Far less grounded than a clan like ThunderClan, WindClan gives into whimsy, often naming cats simply for the sound of it. Paleshine sounds more pleasant than Palepelt, though WindClan cats do not discriminate against more simplistic suffixes should they feel they properly suit a cat.
Commonly, suffixes denoting a cat’s speed are utilized in WindClan, and it is no rare thing to run into a whole patrol of WindClan cats sharing suffixes such as -foot, -flight, -breeze, -wing, -step, or -leap.
Although names given for the sake of unique conditions or disabilities are not common in WindClan, a queen may elect to name their kitten untraditionally should they be born with something that may impair their capability to flit easily across the moors. Rather than discourage the kit, these names are meant to acknowledge and celebrate their differences, as every WindClan cat must tackle a life of moor running and chasing in pursuit of speedy rabbits and other prey. WindClan does not name for scarring, however, as they do not see any need to acknowledge what are usually superficial marks upon a cat’s body.
Legacy names are common within WindClan as well, prefixes often carried down along generations and frequently repeated. A kitten being named for a grandmother they never had the chance to meet is seen as a way of further honoring their ancestors and carrying on their memory, a tradition that WindClan holds in high regard.

ShadowClan Naming Conventions
Although the other clans see ShadowClan’s territory as quite unsavory, the cats who exist in the marshes find them to be comforting. Because of this, ShadowClan names frequently pay homage to their surroundings. Prefixes for swamp creatures like frogs or names directly taking inspiration from their surroundings, like marsh- or bog-, are very well regarded in ShadowClan.
Overall, though, ShadowClan places little restriction on their names. Some are average, like Blackfur, and others are brutal and sharp, like Tatteredpelt. In fact, ShadowClan favors names given for the sake of scars, injuries, and other struggles. Often as soon as a warrior sustains a significant wound, their name will be altered to signify it. On rare occasions, an apprentice may go from boasting one prefix to immediately having it changed once they are promoted, given a new lease on their life.
Like ThunderClan, ShadowClan is keen on names that appear powerful and resilient. They like to dish out -fang and -claw wherever applicable, and often name their warriors in ways that make them seem far more intimidating than they truly are. As ShadowClan is the most adapted to absorbing loners, rogues, and kittypets into their ranks, they may also occasionally host unusual or untraditional names taken from the original names of such outsiders.
Beyond renaming cats for their wounds, ShadowClan holds tight to a particular tradition that permits any cat who feels their name no longer suits them to request a complete change. This is up to the discretion of ShadowClan’s leader, of course, but most often these requests are readily granted. Renaming ceremonies are a very personal part of ShadowClan life, and sometimes, a cat may choose to keep their new name private from the prying eyes of cats from neighboring clans for moons at a time until they feel ready to reveal it. Some cats never do, going by one name among their clanmates and another among cats of opposing clans.
Because survival is not always easy for this clan of scavengers, kittens tend to be named later in ShadowClan than they do in any other clan. Sometimes, a queen may wait moons before giving their litter any official names. As a result, some ShadowClan warriors bear kithood nicknames that are simple and straight to the point, though these nicknames are usually only spoken by a cat’s direct kin. Occasionally, these nicknames will be settled upon as a kitten’s actual name — for example, Littlepaw was originally just Little, a haphazard nickname given because of his fragile, tiny size upon his birth into the clan.

ThunderClan Naming Conventions
In ThunderClan, a strong name is believed to make for a strong warrior. Though a queen may choose any name for her kit, prefixes associated with power are popular among the forest dwelling clan. Beasts of myth like lions, tigers, and leopards are often utilized in ThunderClan names, as are powerful predators like coyotes, foxes, or badgers.
Prefixes that are valued highly are those that denote a skill. Though striving for a suffix like -claw or -fang is common for ThunderClan cats, most are just as content being named for their capabilities in tracking, agility, hunting, or other useful things. Warriors who are named simplistically after their pelts or appearances may thus feel shunned by their leader, though more often than not, a name of -fur or -pelt simply denotes a cat who is all around reliable rather than a standout in any one regard. Generally, names have less whimsy in ThunderClan and more outright utility, describing just what a cat’s defining feature or talent may be.
For ThunderClan, a powerful name is more than just something to boast about. Sickly kittens are given strong prefixes to encourage survival and ward off danger or bad health. It is a superstition that sometimes a strong name may save a kitten close to death, and on occasion, if a kit originally given a simpler name — say, Brownkit — is to fall unexpectedly ill, their parents may petition the leader for a name change so long as the kitten is under six moons of age. Brownkit may thus become Martenkit, or Hawkkit, or anything of the sort.
As far as other name alterations go, it is rare for any ThunderClan warrior to bear a name echoing an injury, a scar, or a condition that notably sets them apart from their clanmates. Although scars are considered attractive to ThunderClan warriors, they tend not to bear names acknowledging them, as the scar’s mark itself is more than enough to show off. However, when a cat retires to become an elder, it is quite common for this new phase of life to come with a name change. Rather than disrespect the elder, these new names are meant to acknowledge the hardships they have endured or perhaps pay homage to the many injuries sustained during a difficult time serving their clan. ThunderClan elders bear these names with pride, seeing them as a mark of survival.

On a Warrior’s Assessment – RiverClan Risks
For RiverClan, a clan full of cats who prioritize comfort, luxury, and prosperity, the time of an apprentice’s assessment is perhaps one of the most exhilarating moments for any individual cat. Any RiverClan cat who has crossed paths with an opposing border patrol has heard the accusations — they are lazy, vain, and all too assured for cats who rarely lift a paw — and in some sense, a RiverClan apprentice’s assessment has been designed to challenge such conceptions.
The water is a vital part of any RiverClan cat’s life. Nearly from birth, kittens are trained to adapt to the process of staying afloat, their skills refined as they age. Often, a RiverClan cat will be capable of a basic paddle even before they are given their apprentice name. Because of this, the vast majority of RiverClan assessments are tethered to swimming.
Any apprentice who faces a typical training period will be encouraged to attempt their assessment at twelve moons of age, though not every cat immediately makes haste for their chance to become a warrior. Still, most will at least try to pass their assessment at twelve moons, though it is not uncommon for RiverClan apprentices to fail in their first attempt.
After all, the task set out in front of them is monumental. To pass their assessment, a RiverClan apprentice must swim against the current for the entire length of the river. Though they are permitted to slow their pace, they may not stop at any point. It takes endurance, strength, and strong swimming skills to be able to make it to the end of the river, at which point they must complete one final task. To drag any fish from the depths once they climb to the bank of the water is the final feat a RiverClan apprentice must complete, be it a minnow or a trout. Often exhausted from the process of swimming, RiverClan cats may falter at this final step.
Still, RiverClan is a clan made to swim, and they take their assessment very seriously, practicing thoroughly for it. Throughout the seasons of newleaf, greenleaf, and even the first moon or so of leaf-fall, apprentices will set about this assessment with determination. Few cats are at true risk due to a RiverClan cat’s instincts to always stay afloat, though danger is introduced in two forms. First, if the river swells, and second, if an apprentice must be assessed in the coldest moons of the year.
Of course, no cat may swim when the water is covered in a sheet of ice. Rather than avoid assessing apprentices during this time altogether, RiverClan hosts a rather bold challenge for those who come of age when snow coats the ground. To pass a leafbare assessment, an apprentice must follow the same path they would in a warmer time, though they walk along the river rather than swimming it. Still, they do not stay safely on the banks. Instead, they are expected to tread carefully atop the ice that coats the water.
If the ice cracks a touch, the assessment instantly concludes. Many apprentices will request to be held back from warriorhood if they coincidentally hit twelve moons of age during leafbare, though brave cats may take on the challenge, and any cat who passes their assessment during such a season will be regarded by the clan as a truly capable warrior.
Should an apprentice tackle their assessment during the season of ice and frost, a rescue team must accompany them. The clause that any ice cracking or shifting concludes the assessment has, after all, not saved the occasional apprentice from accidentally splashing in to frigid water. Frequently, the healer attends the rescue team, close by in case the worst occurs. Leafbare assessments are a rarity, though, as apprentices again will often avoid them, and prospective parents usually attempt to avoid having litters that will be fated for their assessment to fall during such an unfortunate time of the year.
When a RiverClan apprentice passes their assessment, they will first be gifted either a stone, which is most common, or sometimes a shell that has been carefully carved and engraved with decorations unique to that individual cat. The engravings may be done by any significant figure in the apprentice’s life, though often the duty is taken by mentors, parents, or close friends. This gift will be kept for a lifetime by a RiverClan cat, frequently nestled into their den alongside their nest, valued highly and meant to represent the progress made during their moons of training.
Once the gift has been provided, RiverClan apprentices are named by their leader, and as soon as a name has been given, the clan gathers round with heaps of water soaked moss which they then shake and splatter the newly named warrior with. If the warrior has any close friends or kin, it is somewhat of a tradition for them to later assist the new warrior in grooming their pelt clear and dry of the sprinkling of water as an exchange of intimacy and trust.

On a Warrior’s Assessment – WindClan Whims
Perhaps inspired by the ever moving breezes of their moors, WindClan is a collection of cats whom change comes to quite easily. Within the clan, cats tend to trust and listen to one another and their own instincts, even when it comes to what is offered by the clan’s young cats — apprentices.
Whenever a WindClan apprentice feels capable of breaching the subject of warriorhood, they are required to inform their mentor and their leader of their intent to make their Moonstone Journey. Only in rare cases is such a thing denied, such as an apprentice being too young, as WindClan cats may only make this quest beginning at twelve moons of age. For the most part, though, WindClan trusts each clanmate to understand their own readiness and limitations. This wisdom is displayed in the fact that WindClan apprentices often wait before jumping straight into a warrior assessment. Along with RiverClan apprentices, they average the longest wait time before tackling their warrior assessments.
Once their quest has been declared, a WindClan apprentice will set out alone and make their way to the Moonstone. Spirituality is vital to this clan, and rather than enter with an offering, WindClan cats trust their ancestors to greet them readily, knowing that respect will be exchanged afterwards. Once in the cavern that contains the Moonstone, a WindClan apprentice must settle in and allow their dreams to claim them.
Although some clans consider it taboo to directly discuss the occurrences of StarClan inspired dreams, especially clans which highly value the uniqueness of their healers, WindClan finds peace in openly sharing their ties to Silverpelt and her fallen. The range of dreams that may occur during a WindClan apprentice’s assessment is widely varied. Some cats report direct discussions with fallen friends, while others echo tales of much more elaborate and whimsical dreams with much symbolism to decipher. Whatever the case, an apprentice’s dream is perhaps one of the most special “possessions” a WindClan cat may have. Frequently, a future warrior name may be inspired from such dreams. In other cases, a WindClan cat may remember their dream and later use its most important parts in the naming of their future families and kin.
Once the dream concludes, the next portion of the assessment ensues. For many moons ahead of time, WindClan cats train in the art of how to strip and properly prepare bones, as the conclusion of their assessment calls for such a tactic. To give thanks to StarClan, Silverpelt, and their ancestors above, a WindClan apprentice will leave the Moonstone, hunt and kill a rabbit, and then return the bones of the rabbit to the cavern, scattering them around the stone in gratitude. A rumor exists that the more pristine the bones a cat leaves behind, the more likely they are to be favored by their ancestors for the duration of their life. Returning home, a WindClan apprentice will then aptly be named underneath a night time sky with the stars above them to witness their promotion.
Because of the supposed simplicity of dreaming and the interpretation that all a WindClan cat must do to be named is make a short journey to the Moonstone rather than hunt, fight, or show off other skills, it is common that WindClan is mocked by their neighbors for having an assessment that is “too easy” and “does not properly prepare apprentices for warriorhood.” This belief is a disrespectful one, touted often by cats who see no value in WindClan’s delicate spiritual nature, but it can be found spoken by arrogant ThunderClan cats certain of their strength, bold ShadowClan cats who believe their minds to be the sharpest in all the land, or proud RiverClan warriors who assert that they risk their very lives in the process of their graduation. WindClan warriors do their best to pay no mind to these criticisms for how often they hear them, instead focusing on their own unique bond with their ancestors above even if they are not properly respected by their living companions.

On a Warrior’s Assessment – ShadowClan Secrecy
In many regards, ShadowClan is the most mysterious group of cats. Their reputation for closely guarding their secrets is not unearned, and even within their ranks, they have an inclination towards mysterious behaviors. One such example of this comes in the form of their assessments.
A cat outside of ShadowClan, if asked, could never explain to you just what exactly is required of a ShadowClan apprentice for their graduation. Maybe they hunt, dragging back as much prey as is possible to impress their elders. Perhaps they brawl, showing off honed fighting skills. There might be something to do with sneaking, given how inclined they are to stealth.
The truth of the matter is, ShadowClan assessments vary wildly from individual to individual. One common thread that runs through each, though, is the idea of testing an apprentice’s wit. ShadowClan values clever minds perhaps even more than they value outright imposing auras or sharpened claws, as a smart cat needs not fight any battles — scars and wounds might be avoided if one is quick thinking enough, able to outsmart an opponent rather than overpower them.
That is not to say that fighting is not also held in high regard by ShadowClan cats. However, rather than focusing on the art of overpowering another warrior, ShadowClan trains in tactics of ambushing. Catching a cat by surprise makes for an easier fight to win, and though ThunderClan boasts of being the best fighters in the forest, ShadowClan cats stand a genuine chance in any battle they may be involved in.
Although the process of an individual assessment is usually highly customized to whichever apprentice is tackling it, ShadowClan assessments frequently take the form of an intensified version of kit games like hide and seek or scavenger hunts. Scavenging in particular is of value for the clan, as much of their food comes from the nearby twoleg dump. Knowing what is safe to eat and what may be dangerous is something every apprentice must learn before they may graduate.
Mentors are highly involved in the assessment process for a ShadowClan apprentice as well, and if a mentor makes any assessment too “easy,” they may be mocked by their clan, their apprentice considered a disgrace. Because of this, ShadowClan assessments have evolved over time to become increasingly elaborate, often involving the entirety of the clan in their planning stages. Some cats have murmured stories about waking up to a camp void of clanmates, having been assigned the task of tracking every last one down before the sun was to set. Others might recall a gauntlet set out in front of them through the territory’s most dangerous parts, warriors lined up in shaded areas to ambush them unexpectedly at each turn.
Riddles or word puzzles are also commonly used in the final phases of a cat’s assessment, and if their mind is not capable enough to solve them, they may be denied the chance to ascend to warriorhood. ShadowClan apprentices tend to prepare for the likelihood of riddle solving by quizzing each other on common ones, testing the limits of their thoughts so that they are never completely taken by surprise when their mentor decides to utilize this form of testing.
The promotion of a new warrior in ShadowClan is usually less of a show than it is a quiet moment in which the graduating apprentice is commended, honored, and given their new name. To sit vigil, they must settle outside of camp, watching the darkened territory overnight before they will be considered a full member of their clan. If any danger approaches during the night, the new warrior is expected to fend it off before it reaches the clan to show their dedication and new prowess.

PINNED POST
The Prophecies Rewritten is a Warrior Cats rewrite that aims to revise the first arc of Warriors, The Prophecies Begin. This rewrite will introduce many elements such as a layered plot, in depth character development and relationships, and an all around more cohesive story.
Currently, the rewrite is in a work in progress stage where the worldbuilding and basics are being developed. Though the first chapters have been written, they may take time to be posted as laying down guidelines comes first. Much of the “origins” of the clans have been altered, and ties from the canonical timeline are shifted slightly to account for modifications such as new families, new relationships, and more fleshed out clans. When the chapters themselves are ready, they will likely be posted on Archive of our Own for reading simplicity.
The rewrite is for the most part written and handled by a singular author, though assistance may be taken on for the sake of technical things, such as determining character genetics and appearances, or proofreading chapters.

On a Warrior’s Assessment – ThunderClan Traditions
Within ThunderClan, a warrior who is powerful and sturdy is the most valuable kind of cat. As such, ThunderClan tends to be a clan of battle ready cats, prioritizing physical prowess in battle first and foremost. Although apprentices must learn to complete all sorts of tasks, a ThunderClan assessment is one meant to honor ThunderClan’s fanaticism for fighters.
As soon as a mentor, the most important guiding figure in a young cat’s life, decides that their apprentice is up to the challenge, the apprentice will be thrust forth into a gauntlet of challenging battles. Most mentors are wise when it comes to timing, though it is not unheard of to encounter a ThunderClan mentor who will push a rather young apprentice into completing their assessment early on for the sake of being able to boast about their success in training them.
A ThunderClan apprentice’s assessment is a spectacle, to say the least. The clan will gather round to witness each assessment, eager to see the progress of each apprentice and perhaps more important, there to judge whether the battle is a fair one. As one of the opponents an apprentice must face is fated to be their own mentor, the clan will judge the mentor’s honesty in the fight, and may call out a cat who is being too gentle on their apprentice simply to allow them to slip through the cracks. They cheer on the battling cats, imbued with fighting spirit, and friends and kin alike will gather to give encouragement to those participating in such an assessment.
In a typical assessment, a ThunderClan apprentice put forth by their mentor will first fight in a face off against a peer. This may be a fellow apprentice or a recently graduated warrior, though it must always be a cat within similar bounds of maturity and experience of the apprentice being assessed. The face off between the apprentice and their peer is often considered the simplest step. If the battle is won, the apprentice moves onward.
The next phase of the assessment comes in an apprentice’s duty to battle with their mentor. As the cat who trained them, the mentor is significant to the apprentice, and if the apprentice can make their mentor their equal by defeating them, they move onto the final phase — battling the champion.
As a result of the greenleaf festivities that ThunderClan indulges in, each new season that rolls around means that a champion of the clan is named. A cat may retain this title should they win the games hosted by ThunderClan each year, though it is not uncommon for a champion to be usurped. Proclaimed the most capable cat within their clan, this champion is also an integral part of ThunderClan assessment culture.
To complete their assessment, a ThunderClan apprentice must vanquish the champion in battle. Although it changes depending on which cat holds the title, more often than not the champion is a good natured cat who will go a bit easy on the approaching apprentice, as this phase is more about show than serious skill. In this portion, the clan is at its peak, and should an apprentice succeed here, they will immediately be named afterwards by the clan leader.
Just as important as ThunderClan’s traditional assessment, however, is the likelihood of promotion based on heroics. Involvement in battle or perhaps participation in warding off an offending patrol or predator as an apprentice is often cited as a reason for early promotion, though this is done at the discretion of the clan leader rather than an apprentice’s individual mentor. This clause can occasionally lead to ThunderClan apprentices maintaining a reputation of recklessness, as the most eager may be ready to jump into any battle they can get their paws on in the hopes of an early promotion.
In fact, ThunderClan is the only clan to traditionally allow for the promotion of a warrior before their twelfth moon. All other clans insist on warriors reaching a year of age before being given a name, but ThunderClan may allow the rare ten moon old or eleven moon old to graduate should they show true promise. Because of this, and because of their use of thorough battle for assessments, the other clans occasionally may decree them brutish or overzealous.
