Hi Bat! I was at the Sunday 3pm show of Cyrano de Bergerac at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). It stars James McAvoy. Before the show, I spotted Sam Heughan when he bought a beer from the bar. He was wearing the same jacket that was on the fan pics in NY. I wasn’t sure at first it was him but he removed his mask to drink I knew for sure it was him. He was standing by one of the bar tables very low key. I don’t think anyone noticed him. I wasn’t sure if he was waiting for someone because he was by himself at this time.

I didn’t want to bother him and I was too shy to talk to him and my friend had arrived by then so we went to our seats in the orchestra. We were seated on the left side group of seats. A few mins after, Sam walks in (he was seating in the center area by the aisle on the 2nd row. I was diagonally maybe 4 rows behind his row on the opposite aisle. He had an empty seat beside him. Just before the play starts, the theatre starts blinking their lights to signal to the audience that the play is about to start. Just then an usher walks towards Sam’s seat followed by a tall, skinny lady with dark bob cut. She was wearing a black mask but I recognized Caitriona because of her walk. She has a “walk”. Anyway, he stands up to let her in and puts his hand on her back as she gets by and then sits down. I was totally surprised to see them together.

At intermission, they were quick to get up to walk to the lobby. I tried to spot them but couldn’t see where they went but they were back to their seats just before the 2nd Act started. At the end of the play after the curtain call, they were quick to get up with Caitriona grabbing Sam’s hand and an usher came to them and they followed her out to the lobby. I thought maybe they were led backstage to talk to James McAvoy. He was really good in the play.

Anyway, I thought I share this now since I just got back from NYC.

Sending you all my love @rainmanjdog, and all healthcare workers. You are true heroes, but I know you don’t want titles or accolades. You want to save lives, including your own. You deserve so much better.

My own country has one of the shittiest healthcare systems. It doesn’t help that so anti-vaxxers are growing and so are the different variants of COVID-19. I have nothing else to offer but the promise to keep practicing health protocols, get my vaccine, and encourage others to do the same.

Please, please do your part to curb the effects of this pandemic. Stay safe.

I had a family member peel me off the floor sobbing over another FEMA project deadline for our hospital. Our ER is broken. Our staff is exhausted. My shoulders and back are chronically spasming from the stress, workload and demands.

You have a right to your opinions.

But I beg and plead, stop calling those of us who work in healthcare liars.

It is difficult and excruciating enough as it is.

It is the disdain shown towards healthcare and those of us trying to keep people alive that is the most difficult part for me.

I’m not as active as I used to be because of the show’s hiatus and my busy life, but I am disgusted that something like this is happening in the fandom. Disgusted but not surprised.

There are so many disconcertingly disturbed and spiteful individuals, not just in this fandom, but on the internet. Knowing that a supposedly “safe space” such as Tumblr OL has been poisoned by such horrible sentiments is truly heartbreaking.

To the homophobic pieces of shit bloggers who are insecure little assholes, do us all a favor and go straight to hell. You are not welcome here.

To the Queer side of the fandom, you are loved, valid, and a pillar of our little community. You have all done wonderful art, fanfics, blog posts, and even those who just quietly support, you are all amazing. We love you and support you and STAND WITH YOU. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

For those who follow me who are not in the Outlander fandom I want to try and explain what went down yesterday. (15th January 2022).

For years - literally years - an LGBTQIA+ section of the fandom has existed. However, on social media and especially on stories that contain Queer characters or plots and themes, there has been consistent trolling, bullying, and negative comments including homophobic hate messages.

Yesterday a number of people within the Queer section of the fandom started receiving anon hate. However, the spelling wording and tenor of the messages was the same as publicly posted tumblr posts from known accounts. And one account in particular. This account was making hate-filled responses to blog posts made by people within the LGBTQIA+ corner of the fandom.

When the individual user was challenged by specific blog users (happy to mention names but only if they consent) the tone of the messages became more serious and began including personal attacks. Now the messages were not just attacking Queer characters, Queer interpretations or Queer storytelling but now including personal attacks of a homophobic and hateful nature against individuals within the fandom.

These messages included as I say, attacks of a personal nature. Some of these were relatively petty but some of them escalated up to encouragment to self harm and encouragement for someone to take their own life. Death threats, people. We are talking about named blogs of known individuals sending death threats to users because of who they are or the way they write fictional characters.

Its easy to sit by and think, ‘Wow that looks ugly!’ And do nothing.

This fandom has a serious problem with hate and yes, with the alt-right. The fandom has ingrained homophobic, racist and white supremacist narratives. Some of that comes from the way the original canon texts express themselves.

When someone receives a message telling them to go kill themselves, the correct response is not to sit by on the sidelines.

This fandom needs to decide what it thinks is right. And I feel I have an obligation as the writer of stories like Triquetra which I am aware changed the zeitgeist of the fandom for a lot of people, I feel I have an obligation to use whatever small platform I may have to stand up against hate and bullying.

I lived through the gaslighting, sock-puppeting, the plagiarism, and so much more. But really it comes down to this:

Either you believe in decency or you don’t. Either you believe in the inherent worth of human beings or you don’t. Either you believe in standing up for what is right or you don’t.

Now is the time to let the world know what you believe.

No one is saying every single user on the internet ever has to personally go to war with every troll. But whoever you are, and whatever your fandom (or none) a show of support from outwith the LGBTQIA+ section of the Outlander fandom would mean a lot. This corner of the fandom has been fighting this fight - that other people keep bringing to them - for a long time. Years and years at this point.

Please, if you think that the spreading of hate messages and death threats is wrong, consider posting a short blog post expressing your solidarity.

Give hate no quarter.

Do not tolerate intolerance. Thank you for your time.

LMAO I just saw Sam’s post on Instagram about this and had to do a double take. Outlander moving to Starz is a bad, bad move, especially if they’re taking it off other streaming sites like Netflix where the majority of spike in viewership came from in the past year.

There are many countries who can’t access Starz, and moreover, won’t pay an absurd amount for a monthly subscription for one show. Me included. OL may be their biggest moneymaker but only to those who can easily access the show. If they take it off Netflix, y’all can find me downloading the eps on T*rrent and Pir*tebay. ☠️🏴‍☠️

The latest news from Starz reinforces the levels of absurdity that are being reached with streaming services. The disappearance of series, not being able to keep favorites when that happens, changing content libraries … many factors that keep the memory of my hard drives filling up.

Although it is politically incorrect, there are always other means and, with the greed of the studios, they are making a comeback.

They force me to put myself in “Jack Sparrow” mode 🤬🤬

I mean, yeah. This is a pretty succinct summary of how the merry old tale of Sam and Cait has been going since COVID happened. Same sentiments, though.

I haven’t been around that much in recent months because I try to avoid (unnecessary) stress in my life and this fandom can sometimes give me plenty of that.

But ya know, it’s good to step back a little bit. Gives you fresh perspective and all that. Still loads of shady shit going on, that’s for sure. But sometimes it’s nice to just sit back and cheer on these two strangers that have strangely embedded themselves into our lives, whether they know we exist or not.

I’m not itching for every bit of crumb I can get from their personal lives anymore but I’m still here for the long run. Endgame shipping and yadda yadda yadda. Congratulations to miss ma’am Caitríona Balfe and her family! Sending loads of love, hugs, and sleep. She’ll need it.

My Nuggets of Thoughts

I didn’t start watching Outlander until this past Spring and then became a shipper shortly after.  When I came into the fandom it was shortly after the “marriage certificate” had made its rounds.  I’ve never thought there were any secret babies nor given much thought to the certificate.  I started to dive through archives and watched many old interviews and panels that led me to truly “shipping” Sam and Cait.  The baby news today does not change that.

Now the following thoughts have ran through my mind throughout the past several months of being in the fandom, some I’ve chatted with bloggers who’ve been around a long time about and others I just kept to myself but today I thought I’d share some of the things that have ran through my mind in the past 4 months since discovering Outlander and fandom.   

The following are some bullet points that I noted to myself:

Growing your own food

Environmentally conscious, sustainability

Spiritual

Vegetarian/vegan

Nature (including natural medication/supplements)

Hippie culture belief in “free love” (noting this point to explain why things on mainstream media and culture may not make sense to so many in trying to understand the dynamics of the relationships and the oddity of “T’s presence.”  When we base it off our own social norms but if we look at it through a different lens it may not be so confusing.

How others (those who’ve worked with them, those who know them personally/professionally/both) speak about them

How they speak about each other

I feel that at the beginning when they first started Outlander they were just getting to know one another and friends who were attracted to each other but never acted on their feelings.  By season 2 they had acted on their feelings. I think that both Sam and Cait love and care and are deeply attracted to one another but for reasons beyond their control and for a greater cause being the show that’s now going into season 7 that means now 8 years since they first met…there are many factors such as security, privacy, TPTB, etc. that have caused them to pull back.  We don’t know what the future holds nor what the statuses of their relationships are at.  What I do feel strongly is that there is a bond that’s so deep and so strong between Sam and Cait that nobody can break into.  

I feel that Cait’s so-called marriage is nearing it’s end.  There are many many examples within Hollywood and outside of the industry of marriages that end during a pregnancy and certainly plenty after children are born.  

Now let’s look at TIMING (I feel that Cait had her baby back in July because that photo of baby…the baby’s hand isn’t that of a wrinkly newborn and the outfit definitely a bit bigger)

Eddie died middle of October 2020

Cait may have gotten pregnant by the end of October (grief brings people together in interesting ways)

She started to fiddle around with wearing of her rings (or not wearing them) (January -March 2021)

Rumours of a pregnancy, miserable marriage, divorce all started to happen (then Oprah linked site pushes out a recycle article and Cait’s friend Oliver posts repeat photo of him at her wedding)  (January - March 2021)

Sam buys a farmhouse that has vegetable garden planters, large house with privacy and plenty of yard space for running around (May 2021)

Duncan’s post with Cait in background…Duncan standing in a way that perfectly blocked out the front of Cait but clearly it’s her and without a ring (sure her hands may swell a bit but her rings are a bit loose so I’m sure it wasn’t so swollen that she couldn’t wear them…all of my friends went through all their pregnancies keeping all their rings on)  (June 2021)

Sam starts wearing a chain necklace and bracelets, first seen on him around Father’s Day, June 2021)

Only Graham makes a mention of “T” by name and the wording of things are funny…Graham starts off by congratulating Cait specifically and then ends it with “best wishes….” That sounds more like good luck being “co-parents” of new baby.  

I have a friend who moved to Asia after finishing university here and for both her pregnancies she came back to have her babies while she was 8 months pregnant and then went back to Asia after her babies were a month old. 

I went to university with another girl who now practices Shamanism.  She was married to one guy legally but then met another guy and both were ok with sharing their lives in different ways with her but now she is with the second guy and they are very spiritual and open in how their relationship came to be and how her ex was so supportive of that.  

There have been many relationships within Hollywood and outside of it where marriages have broken down during a pregnancy and certainly plenty afterwards.  Hollywood and entertainment industry is messy business.  Think about the success rates of marriages in it.  I look at some Hollywood couples whom I admire and what sacrifices they’ve made, the challenges, and what makes their relationships work (Nicole + Keith, Ryan + Blake, Rita +Tom, Goldie + Kurt).    

Just some food for thought.

I will continue to ship Sam and Cait because there is no harm in that because by definition “shipping” is where you wished for two people to be in a relationship together.  I wish the baby happiness, good healthy and loved.  I’m happy for Cait and her family, having a new addition is very joyous.  This baby will be super loved and I think of all the many people who’d be happy to babysit him while his mama has to be on set.  I also laugh at how likely the baby will spend more time in Sam’s presence because Cait certainly will try to have baby on set when she can so she can nurse him.
