The dark-haired boy scowled and sank deeper in his seat. Their multi-layerd complexity was a sign I couldn’t read, though the general import was clear enough: different tribe, forget about it, I’m way too cool for you, don’t even try to talk to me. Such was my mistaken first impression of the only friend I made when I was in Vegas, and – as it turned out – one of the great friends of my life.

Más tarde, durante el trayecto en taxi y después, repasaría mentalmente ese momento y me maravillaría de haberme ido de allí con tanta naturalidad, diciéndole adiós con la mano. ¿Por qué no lo había agarrado del brazo y le había suplicado por última vez que se subiera al coche, vamos, Boris, joder, esto es como saltarse una clase, estaremos desayunando sobre campos de trigo antes de que salga el sol. Lo conocía lo bastante bien para saber que si le pedias algo sin rodeos en el momento adecuado haría casi cualquier cosa; y justo en el instante en que me alejaba supe que él habría corrido detrás de mi y se habría subido al taxi riéndose si se lo hubiera pedido por última vez. Pero no lo hice. Y quizá fue mucho mejor así; eso lo digo ahora, ya que durante un tiempo me arrepentí amargamente.
