I finally watched The Maze Runner: Death Cure and I have thought.
I wouldn’t say I had given up with the series but I read the books when the first movie came out (5 years ago) and I was hyped for Scorch Trials but after I saw all the changes to the book my hype slowly diminished - further added after Dylan’s accident (nothing for which I blame him for) but then I saw the trailer for Death Cure, and most of the trailer seemed unfamiliar (whether there were lots of changed or my memory forgetting a detailed story) I wasn’t jumping out of my seat to watch it until the end.
“Please Tommy, Please”
I wasn’t sure whether or not they would kill Newt in the film (due to him being a fan favourite) and how he would die but I did want to watch up. But, I never had any time. The movie came out in January (????) and when I had free time I was too scared to watch it, too scared to see if they changed it and ruined it. Until a few months ago where I saw a picture of Newt as a Crank (which further scared me from watching it) but I finally decided to watch it.
But anyway, the point of this post:
Newt’s Death
I mention all of that because I don’t know whether or not I have an unpopular opinion, whether the fandom was split over his death - I avoided all spoilers of the film for an entire year. So here’s what I thought,
I didn’t like it.
To sum it up in 4 words that’s what it is. And there’s a couple reasons for this:
The first, but probably least important reason is the name ‘Tommy’ - if you read the books you know that Tommy was a special nickname that Newt only called him. In the film, he barely said it - I counted it 3 times. I think they were trying to use that name during special moments, the truly important ones, but as a book reader I just wish they let Newt call him it throughout the entire series. In his death scene Newt is going back and forth becoming a Crank and you can just feel how desperate he is to hold onto his humanity for one last breath to beg for his death. And it is after Newt calls Thomas that name that Thomas finally listens and does what he’s been asked. The movie didn’t give me that feeling, I was sad and upset but no where as emotional as I was reading the book.
The second reason I wasn’t a fan of his death was because of a particular scene that was cut out: Newt’s story of his attempted suicide. It was in the movie, way earlier when Thomas finds out he was bitten, and although I’m confused why it was there of all places it was at least in the movie. But it got deleted. I understand it’s not Wes’ fault but this scene was so important. Newt explains how he climbed up onto the maze and jumped to try and kill himself, moments before he actually dies. Newt blames Thomas for how he felt, he does everything in his power to make Thomas angry so that he would kill him and this was left entirely out of the movie. It’s such an important scene, we learn about Newt’s past, but we see how desperate he is to die - how he will say anything to try and die. It shows the reader how much he doesn’t want to turn into a Crank, how much he needs to end his life. It’s such an emotional moment and I can’t understand why they never included it.
Third, the biggest reason why I didn’t like - in fact, as I’m writing this my feelings have further developed to: hated Newt’s death is that Thomas didn’t kill him. I remember watching the movie, crying but then I saw Newt kill himself and I just had to pause. Thomas should have been the one to kill Newt. Newt’s death does so much for Thomas as a character but more their relationship. Newt was the first real friend Thomas ever had in the maze, they were best friends throughout the entire series - always paired together and helping each other. And at this moment, when Newt asks for one last favour it almost tears Thomas apart. In the book, Thomas repeatedly says he can’t do it as Newt further grows insane - but in for a second Newt returns and begs his best friend, the one who he has been with for years, to let him be at peace and Thomas, against every bone in his body, brings this peace to him. It’s such a tear jerking and emotional moment but in the movie we get none of this. We just see Thomas try to keep Newt alive so he lives but he never listens to what Newt has to say and he never does what Newt wanted to badly. Thomas is selfish in that sense, that he would rather risk Newt turning into a Crank at the chance of a cure, rather than carry out that act that’s he’s been asked of. Thomas is so selfless in the book and although he may hate himself afterwards and have his friends grow to hate him, he does it because he loves Newt and would do anything to make him happy - even if that meant killing him.
I love Dylan O’Brien to death and I cried so much during the scene in the movie but I just wished it was different.
But anyway, if you happen to stumble upon this now when I made it or in months after it’s posted. What did you think?
