Unsighted | A unique cocktail of ideas

A little while ago I played a game called Unsighted, an indie game borrowing heavily from older titles like Zelda and Dark Souls. While I shared my positive opinions on Twitter (https://twitter.com/renegademaster5/status/1676081089096347652?s=20) I feel like there's more to mention about this game that couldn't be limited to a single tweet.

One aspect that I only briefly mentioned was its inspiration and how I can tell that the devs really liked Twilight Princess. The Spinner from that game was considered painfully underutilized and getting to play a game where the developer had the same train of thought was quite an interesting sight to see. I counted two uses for it in my playthrough and one hidden mechanic used for speedrunning.

Speaking about speedruns I noticed that this game employed what I call "knowledge locks" where parts of the game are inaccessible until you learn how its mechanics work. There are large enemies that act as massive deterrents from certain areas in the game world. They can two-shot the player character and have attack hitboxes that are impossible to dodge. One of these "knowledge locks" is the ability to kill these monsters without a special late-game weapon. This can open up more areas in the game and there are plenty of locks that require thinking outside the box. The game is incredibly replayable and I can see the potential to full-on sequence break the game with the right abilities.

I also have to give praise for how open and accepting this game is to a diverse set of players. The cast of characters hits a wide variety of body types and character designs. And the main characters are having a gay ole time.

Even outside of the story the game itself is built with an option to turn off the timers in the game to keep it accessible for people that can't handle time limits. Thankfully this includes a hard mode that puts more pressure on the player with time management and makes enemies tougher.

It's not without issues. The platforming felt a bit janky and switching weapons in the middle of combat wasn't all that intuitive. But I can't help but appreciate the ideas presented in this diamond in the rough. I hope Studio Pizxel Punk works on more projects in the future cause I can see the myriad of ideas in this game getting refined into a modern classic.

Twitter is dumb (yet again)

Every other day Space Karen is making a bad decision that negatively affects Twitter with him now limiting the amount of tweets that people can look at. At this point, I'm going to try to make this account a more relevant place to keep up with me.

It'll be a pain in the ass because the formatting on Tumblr is less appealing for casual posting. However, I think a few types of posts that I make on Twitter like the "media that I experience in (current year)" posts might make the jump to Tumblr without a hitch.

No clue what's going to happen next but I'll try and make an effort to post here more often.
