It had been such a stupid argument.

They couldn't decide on what color they wanted to paint the walls in the library (which wasn't even really a library, yet, on account of there were only five books in there). It shouldn't have been a big deal, but they'd both doubled down, snapped at each other, and Ed had slammed the door behind him as he stomped off.

And now here he was, sitting on the porch steps, chin resting on his knees, because he didn't want to be too far away from Stede, even if he was a little pissed at him.

He couldn't help but wonder if this was some kind of sign. If they could get themselves so worked up over paint, then what did that say about their chances for any long-term future?

He turned his head as the front door opened, and Stede was taking in a deep breath, ready to yell so loudly you could hear it down the beach. "EEEEEEDDD!"

"Christ, man, don't shout," Ed snorted. "I'm right here."

"Oh." Stede deflated a bit, and his shoulders slumped as he plopped down next to Ed on the steps. "I expected you would've got...further."

Stede was holding Ed's knee brace, which he obviously hadn't taken the time to put on before stomping off. Ed took it, sat it behind them on the porch, and replaced it with his hand instead.

"I'm sorry I yelled," Ed said quietly. "It's just paint, it's not a big deal."

"And I'm sorry I got so stubborn about it," Stede said, raising their joined hands to his lips to press a kiss to Ed's fingers. "We're still boyfriends, right?"

"I still love that we're boyfriends," Ed corrected, bumping their shoulders together just to make Stede smile. "I'm not gonna want to leave you over one little spat."

"Good. Because I still love that we're boyfriends, too."

"Hey, Stede?" Ed waited patiently for Stede to meet his eyes. "Why did we get so upset about paint?"

"I dunno," Stede shrugged. "Maybe because this is...the first room that's done? That's where I'm at, I think."

"Feels big, yeah. Like it's a big deal."

"And it makes it feel real -"

"Real," Ed nodded. That was a good word for it. "Like, we're doing this. That's our house."

"And it has to be perfect."

"Paint's not permanent ink, though," Ed said, after a moment. "If we decide we don't like it, we can fix it later."

"Yeah." Stede leaned his head on Ed's shoulder, and Ed rested his cheek against his forehead. "But a love like ours..."

"That's permanent," Ed finished, and he could feel Stede's smile against his cheek when Stede turned to kiss him.

They'd butt heads. They were determined, stubborn fuckers, the both of them. But Stede was Ed's most important person in the world, and he was Stede's, and even if they got mad at each other, if they'd always find each other again...

Yeah. Ed was beginning to trust in the knowledge that they'd be okay.

I started with sort of a matador. But then I did a little 18th century sort of a dandy twist on it, where we had these tails that came out from the back. The second I put it on Rhys, he's like flicking them, and he's spinning around, and all of a sudden he's standing up with his chest out like a matador. And his whole persona changed the minute we put him in this little Spanish outfit. [x]

#OFMD

Today I rewatched all of season 2 with a friend who hadn't had the chance to see it, and it's really true that if the pacing seemed off to you as it aired, try watching it altogether. It flows so well when you're not spending a week in between episodes hyping up theories and over-analyzing throwaway lines.

The rewatch hammered home how lucky I feel to have this show! It's so good, friends. I'm so incredibly grateful we got this show.

Some of the little things that I didn't appreciate on first watch that I just adored on a rewatch:

How well Archie and Zheng Yi Sao are immediately integrated into our cast. They had limited time and their writing is really cleverly done to endear us to them immediately.

Every Buttons and Auntie interaction, absolute gold

Surprisingly (for me), Ed and Izzy's interactions in the first two eps. It's just so terminally unhinged. The way Izzy says he "has love" for Ed like he's ashamed of it, like how you have a sickness. "Do you think I wouldn't know the smell of my own rotting former first mate?" The way Ed handed Izzy a gun to try to get him to shoot Ed, but Izzy tried to shoot himself instead and was symbolically reborn. It's good shit.

The Gravy Basket scenes really rewards a rewatch. Try to pick up on clues something's up before Ed realizes, it's great fun.

The way Stede's devotion to Ed is immediately palpable.

Ed and Stede are so soft and cute for each other dear lord. just gets better and better.

The musical choices are top notch, especially in those first three episodes. The sound design in general is exceptional.

The way this show is shot, dear lord. There is so much care in every shot, it doesn't look like a basic TV show.

Every actor in this show is giving it their all. Rhys and Taika are phenomenal, of course, but Con is amazing, Matt Maher makes me love Black Pete more with every rewatch, David Fane is perfect, and Samba Schutte is so incredible. Roach doesn't have a lot this season but Samba gives every line 110%.

Such! A! Good! Show!! If you didn't like the pacing on first watch, take my word for it, try a rewatch.

OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH Edward 'Blackbeard' Teach in Season 2

For the first time in my life, I'm truly and fully present. I used to view the sea as a battlefield, but now I can appreciate the bounty it has to offer, and all of the natural beauty that surrounds it. I am but a humble wanderer, blessed with this feast, no better than a heron, or a blade of grass, or some sand, or like... I don't know, a wave or something.
