Thinking about names in Hadestown this afternoon, and the power they seem to hold? We basically NEVER hear Hades use anyone’s name. He calls Orpheus “son” or “young man.” He calls Eurydice “songbird.” I don’t think we ever actually hear him USE Persephone’s name at all. 

Meanwhile, Persephone thrives on names. She uses her own multiple times in “Livin It Up on Top” and keeps trying to get people to say it in “Our Lady of the Underground.” She makes a point of saying “Hades I know this boy, his name is Orpheus” when Orpheus shows up in Hadestown, and Hades immediately tells her to be quiet. Orpheus too, focuses on names, and he constantly uses Persephone’s where her own husband won’t, and also tells Eurydice that hers sounds like a melody, right from the start. It’s like the power of a name vs. Hadestown, where all the workers FORGET their names almost as soon as they arrive, and it’s really interesting to me?

Euridyce (about Orpheus): is he always like this?

Hermes: yes...

Hermes is not only used to Orpheus' personality because he's known him so long. It's because the story keeps repeating. Hermes keeps retelling it. So when Euridyce asks if Orpheus is always like that, and he says yes, he means that every single time, he repeats his actions: he falls for Euridyce, he goes after her in the underworld, he looks back...and Hermes can't stop it.
