"Libraries are essential to an informed citizenry, and an informed citizenry is the foundation of our republic."
Stephen Tryon Quote

While the situation is better today than it was several years ago, public school libraries still do not have enough books, especially those that are current and compelling for kids.

On March 4, City National Bank awarded 80 Reading is the Way Up literacy grants totalling more than $86,000 to schools in California, Nevada, New York, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Hey everyone, Vera here from the Road to Literacy team. We have 8 days left in our fundraising campaign, and have around $7,000 left to raise. That seems like a lot, but if everyone donated even $5 we could get this done so fast!
Think about it, $5 from you could buy a kid somewhere a brand new book, something they may never have had before! $5 can’t even buy me a book these days, but it could help hundreds (maybe thousands, eep!) of kids have greater access to literature, which is so incredibly important in their development. For $5?! Totally.
So please, consider reblogging this, sharing with friends and family, or even reaching into the crevices of your couch and tossing us some change. I want to personally thank all of the people who have already donated to this project, and the people who have shared and reblogged these links. It means so much to me, and will mean a lot to kids out there (if we get funded!)

"Frederick Douglass taught that literacy is the path from slavery to freedom. There are many kinds of slavery and many kinds of freedom, but reading is still the path.

A really relevant organization to our cause. Help us, or help them, it doesn't really matter, we share a similar goal in spreading literacy and giving books!

Three simple ways to celebrate International Book Giving Day!
1. Give a Book to a Friend or Relative.
2. Leave a Book in a Waiting Room or Lobby.
3. Donate a Book.

Well-meaning adults can easily destroy a child’s love of reading. Stop them reading what they enjoy or give them worthy-but-dull books that you like—the 21st-century equivalents of Victorian ‘improving’ literature—you’ll wind up with a generation convinced that reading is uncool and, worse, unpleasant.
Neil Gaiman, quoted in “Neil Gaiman: Let children read the books they love" by Mark Brown (via schoollibraryjournal)
