Fernand Lungren’s In the Cafe (circa 1882) is a study in quiet estrangement, an image of urban modernity rendered in the dim glow of gaslight. A woman sits alone at a small table, her gaze cast downward, absorbed in thought or merely avoiding the eyes of the viewer. Lungren, an American painter steeped in the tonalism of Whistler and the impressionist inclinations of his European contemporaries, captures an atmosphere of introspection, where the clatter of Parisian nightlife is muffled by the weight of solitude. The composition, built on a foundation of rich browns and ochre, suggests a café that is neither inviting nor hostile but simply indifferent—a transitory space where the self is both exposed and adrift. If there is a narrative here, it is an unresolved one, a fleeting moment between destinations, where loneliness is not imposed but ambient, as much a feature of the space as the absinthe glass at her elbow.

Woodcuts from Lorenz Stoer’s Geometria et Perspectiva, 1567.
From Stoer’s unique, image-based treatise on linear perspective — in each woodcut a complex polyhedron or combination of solids are embedded in a kind of dreamlike ruinscape. The Garden Party
Katherine Mansfield’s The Garden Party is a shimmering example of modernist short fiction, a narrative that glides gracefully on the surface of a single day while plunging into the unsettling depths of class, mortality, and self-awareness.
