a letter to my dear boy, just to tell him there are lifetimes where it could've been  inspired by the idea of @thesandwichincident on tumblr. i had to. i had to give my heart some reprieve its been aching for days.

your soul remembers leaving first, it inhabits a body that doesn’t remember the grief of a lifetime ago. it is glad for you. you do not hear it as it weeps with joy when you find him again in this life, beneath a kinder sky and more forgiving seas.

it knows you do not remember the look on his bloodstained face-not his blood, never his blood-beneath the walls of that great and terrible city. the look in his eyes then had haunted you even as he had died and you had died again with him for a second time. that look that spoke as though it had seen the fall of entire galaxies before him. it was you though, always you. but you do not remember this.

your new body only remembers your new life, the touch of his golden hair so soft and clean, it smelled of… well, him. and he smelled of all things soft and beautiful.

the arrows that pierce your heart are fashioned with love this time, inherent with it, not that cold and hard metallic stuff the men of war had stolen from the earth and bred death into.

his skin is smooth as you run traces of your touch onto his chest, down all the ridges and valleys he had made known to you—for a moment you see flashes of a jarring something, it feels like hell, like a place absent of him, blood seeping into sweat and tear stained dirt, dirt and earth and soil and trees and everything that surrounded him that had had to bear witness to all the atrocities he had, it seemed like they wept alongside him.

but your eyes refocused and he was whole again and alive again and his breathing was something you tried to match your breathing to. you could. in this world you breathed the same life again. you remember thinking how easy it was to breathe beside him and how good it felt and your body didn’t remember a time when it had stopped once.

there are gods in this world, but my gods are kinder than yours, they allow this love to reside within you, to stroke you, to brush its fingers through your hair and over your collarbone and down the valleys of your chest. my gods allow your love to hold you and do not fling little boys into great wars they could never possibly return home from.

but you are home now. you and him and him and you, a great grief flutters across your heart for a moment, that’s the wound of your soul seeping through in remembrance of the world it would always know. but that wound is sealed shut tightly as his arms encase you, strong arms, reliant and bracing. this you are familiar with, both body and soul, this you know.

“When I was younger,” Henry says, “I had this very elaborate idea of taking somebody I loved here and standing inside the chapel, that he’d love it as much as I did, and we’d slow dance right in front of the Blessed Mother. Just a…daft pubescent fantasy.”

Henry hesitates, before finally sliding his phone out of pocket. He presses a few buttons and extends a hand to Alex, and quietly, “Your Song” starts to play from the tiny speaker.

Alex takes his hand, and Henry turns to face the chapel like a nervous postulant, his cheeks hollowed out in the low light, before pulling Alex into it.
