Researchers have found evidence that wild savannah elephants in Kenya label each other with specific vocal sounds, which they then use to communicate. The research is not yet peer-reviewed, but if the results can be verified and reproduced, it would make elephants the only known non-human animal to communicate with random names. Bottlenose dolphins can also call to certain individuals by imitating their unique signature whistles, but scientists say this is slightly different from what we humans do. Our names aren't usually based on imitations of unique noises we make ourselves (like Pikachu), but are generally reflections of something more abstract and less tangible, buried in cultural practices and values. It is this arbitrary nature of human naming that now seems to apply to elephants, too.

** our cats. they are so delightful! They are totally different personalities, and both such CATS. I bought a pair of tiny sunglasses and one of them was super chill and posed for pictures, and the other one was like, hard pass, no, are you crazy? I love them both so much!

** the deer who hangs out in our backyard brought her baby to see us yesterday, or possibly had her baby back there last night... It's hard to say? She was clearly pregnant the day before, and the next morning she had a beautiful speckled fawn with her, and I stared and stared and took a bunch of pictures, and then the neighbors let their barking dogs out (in their own fenced yard) and mama and baby disappeared. eta: they were back early this morning!!!

** reading. I love reading. I'm always reading something. I had covid in december and haven't recovered especially well, and for a while I had a hard time staying awake, and then whenever I'd start reading I'd fall asleep, and then in between sleeps I'd read or just close my eyes and listen to a audio of something being read. And though I don't remember much of the content, I have since re-read several of those books/stories/poems and have loved each one. I'm so grateful for writers and so grateful I love reading!

** community gardens. and people growing flowers and fruits and vegetables and giving them away to friends and neighbors and strangers. <3
