                            heritage

for our third task, we ask you to explore your characters cultural and familial heritage. this can take place in many different forms - creating a family tree, outlining their genealogy through the generations, writing about special events and traditions their family’s had through the years.  this is a task with multiple options - you can do both creative and developmental aspects for it. while aesthetics, graphics, templates, etc. are all certainly welcome - so are paras, ‘journal entries’, written stories of the characters family and where they’ve come from.  dive deep into your muse, thinking about them and their relation to where they came from and what they want to bring forward into the world as they move forward. below are some linked resources, as well as a handful of questions to use as a jumping off point.

i know it says gender is up to player but the bio pronouns/names do lean toward a certain gender so for example the bio of nora, could there be a name change or something if i decide to use a cis male actor to portray it? or must it adhere to the pronouns/name? i hope this makes sense

we would prefer for characters to remain as the presented gender, the ‘players choice’ was primarily about if someone wanted them to - for example with nora - identify them as a trans woman instead of a cis woman. that being said, we’re still flexible and if you love a characterization but would like to change the gender, we can absolutely discuss it! we’re not opposed to changes like that, so long as the writing is good and characterization makes sense :)  update 11/17 we also were thinking of non binary muses as well, who may not identify as either male or female when we were including ‘gender up to player’ - i meant to say this originally, but we finally updated this for anyone who’s wondering going forward !

The first ten years of Theodore’s life are blurry, but in the way that someone chooses not to focus on something, rather than not knowing it’s there. The shadows cast on those years of his life provide a closed curtain for the production, the final show of “My Years in Foster Care.” The second act of his life had been in Wolford Falls, where he was fostered, and then eventually adopted by the Boone family—werewolves like him, and a true, tight-knit family not just by blood but by friendship too. It should have been easy, perfect, beautiful—a happy ending to a nightmare… but being in the system meant that any place called “Home” had a sense of impermanence to it. Despite the efforts of his new mother, Theodore felt disconnected from the world around him, an outsider peeking in on a life he couldn’t possibly have.

A life he couldn’t possibly deserve.

The panic attacks didn’t start until the peace did, after all. Lung-seizing, all-encompassing anxiety locked him away, first in his head, then in his room. Shame had followed suit, because how ungrateful must he have been to feel this way in a home that was safe? So, it became his secret, albeit one not quite so well-hidden if the knowing looks across the dinner table were any indication. He tried to channel it elsewhere and give his fear something else to do. He became a model student, a true perfectionist, and… a complete loner. Always peeking in, never participating. His straight A’s persisted, even as he started to spiral, drinking and smoking himself to sleep most nights with the secret stash under his bed. He was out of control.

The loneliness and the desire to discipline himself into normalcy meant the military had felt like a perfect solution. Those in Wolford Falls were surprised by the choice, considering his unassuming nature, but the escape had felt freeing. It was the first time he’d chosen a place for himself. He brought his drive for perfectionism and excelled… but the panic attacks didn’t go away. The brotherhood of the military felt forced, felt false, and Theodore struggled not to feel like an impostor, but at least the military paid for his schooling.

He ended up in medical school. It was something he’d never considered he’d be good at, even though he’d spent a lot of time perusing his adoptive mother’s medical textbooks on the nights that he couldn’t sleep. The workload of the degree provided the familiar comfort to his busy brain, while the subject provided the familiar comfort of home.

Home.

He wanted to go home.

Jack couldn’t remember the last time he’d had a proper bit of rest. There was just always another something to keep his feet moving. Another shift to cover at the bar or something that needed an extra bit of monitoring at the farm. And, even if that all managed to settle into a sort of equilibrium at last, there was the pack.

The lot of them were never too inclined to make demands, but that didn’t do much to let him escape that nagging itch in the back of his mind. He could post up in the cafe, taking as many refills on his coffee as he could get away with before Nora cut him off and started passing his mug off to Theodore instead. It wasn’t even any sort of trouble, for all his teasing, to sit through the tales of Fletcher’s exploits or Carmen’s rambling workshops of lesson plans. If he managed to sneak in early enough, he could even get in to start meal prep before Maya.

Maya, who was almost certainly going to push him right back up the stairs if he tried to come down to join them all with the bags under his eyes any heavier. She could handle whatever it was he was trying to do, she would insist, and he knew she was right. But that didn’t make it any easier to swallow the guilt that came with placing more weight on her shoulders than what she already let herself carry.

He could keep going, really. All he would need was a bit of a power nap. Enough to make his mind feel a little less like it was trying to slog through molasses. Perfect time for it now that the calf all of them had been waiting on to be born had finally made its entrance into the world. Certainly no one was gonna begrudge him a little rest before someone came up to shove him awake for breakfast.

Except maybe whatever had managed to crash downstairs. Something that came with frantic apologies—half around breathless chuckles—from Miles and groans from everyone else. Oh well, at least Jack would be able to go down with a grin on his face.

Will I sound too much of a dork if I mention how excited to interact with such a seemingly cool concept as a whole? Probably, so…*ahem* I’d love to discuss relationships with various pack members, if only because I feel Jack has a built in soft spot for each of them just for different reasons. They’re family to him, no matter how dysfunctional at times (or how often some of them might want him to just quit hovering). I’d love to give him some connections outside of the pack too, though. Whether friends or someone who sometimes has enough of his nonsense and reminds him to actually take a dang break once and awhile. Also, having grown up with family in Maine and around farms the rest of the time, I love the idea of getting back to that a bit. (No playlist yet, but I did start thumbing through aesthetics when brainstorming this love.)

in wolford falls, there’s a small group who get together on a regular basis at the local book shop - the book garden - after hours to play dungeons & dragons as a community. for those who’d like to be included, please let us know so we can create a list on our blog for future and current players to know who joins the games !  for our purposes, feel free to create a character that your muse would play as, or simply figure out which alignment they may be under the D&D lore ! we’ve included some links for various resources for you to use as well, and look forward to seeing what you might create!

                             wolford falls fall festival

every autumn, the town of wolford falls goes all out in celebration of it’s favorite season. local businesses decorate their storefronts, advertise specials and even have stands during the weekend for the fall festival. located on a piece of the wolford family farm, the festival has been around for over 100 years - a way to celebrate the changing of the seasons with friends and family. 

tourists come from all over new england to taste homemade pies from the lunar cafe, have a drink made especially by the bartenders from the wolf’s den, drink a pumpkin spice latte from the screamin bean, have their future told to them by adelaide price, pick pumpkins from the wolford farm’s pumpkin patch or take one of it’s haunted hayrides. with games for kids and adults, more food than one can eat in one go, it’s a fall favorite of residents and passerby’s. 

this year, the festival starts on october 17th and runs until november 1st every friday, saturday and sunday.

plot 001 / for players

with this task, we officially declare the game OPEN FOR PLAY ! players may start interacting on the dashboard, posting starters, etc. ! 

while game opening has begun earlier than planned, any and all auditions that come before sunday evening at 11pm will be reviewed on the spot. after october 18th, application reviews will occur every monday and thursday, around 7pm CST unless otherwise stated.

Lesson plans. Carmen could totally do this. Definitely do this. She was a damn professional teacher, and she could do this because she needed to.

One of her students- Kaylee- was obviously having a rough time at home. She didn’t think that it was a supernatural sort of problem, but that didn’t make anything less valid. Carmen made a habit of holding something akin to office hours four days a week after school, and Kaylee showed up at every one of those over the last few weeks. It did not take a genius to tell that her student did not need the extra help- that Kaylee was a good kid who didn’t have much going for her than school right now. Carmen could relate. Education had always felt like the best distraction in the world that was absolutely supposed to get you somewhere. Given, she had ended up teaching middle school in a small town, but she didn’t dream of doing something spectacularly showy anymore when she could make life just a little bit better for the kids who needed it. And properly teach the ones that didn’t really need it.

So Carmen had holed herself up in her bedroom, feeling a lot less hubris about being able to come up with a whole unauthorized supplementary lesson plan for the sake of one student. Perhaps she should have thought about doing something like this earlier because it was a good idea. “Yes, you sometimes have very good ideas,” Carmen mumbled to herself as she stared at her laptop screen. What she had hoped would be words of encouragement just made her laugh instead. Surprisingly, laughter helped her process along. Rubbing at her eyebrow, she had to remind herself that she had set out to give a student something meaningful to do with her time. ‘Meaningful’ did not have to mean anything boring.

Smiling to herself, Carmen picked up her laptop, and moved to sit on the bed. Local history could be fun to delve into, particularly since it did not usually come up in schooling. As long as she did not push too much into proving the ‘apocrypha’ that came from this particular town, she imagined there would be no real harm in making this a little assignment. She knew of a few good and reliable little books and webpages on the topic which she was only happy to share with Kaylee. Given, she would probably have to print the webpages out because middle school students did not all bring their laptops to school, but printing costs were worth it in the grand scheme of things.

Carmen recalled that she had been radio silent with the pack that day, and wondered if she should group text the pack to run the idea by them. When times turned rough and started to feel dark, she had a tendency to fold into herself rather than getting the support that she needed. Right now, she was fine, but she didn’t want anybody to possibly worry. After typing furiously for a few moments, Carmen made the simultaneously selfish/selfless decision of shooting everyone a quick text to say, “Busy night, but hope everyone’s okay! Talk later?” It felt amazing to place her phone on silent, and get to relish being on the right track. Things were looking up.

Headcanon-wise? Moving across the country seems to have actually improved her relationship with her adoptive family, and she keeps in touch with them regularly. She sends her nieces and nephews little presents (usually books), but she feels weird about visiting them so often. The pack is her family that she wants to stick close to, and the ones that she’d go to war over if necessary. She’s not exactly a peacekeeper, but she’s reluctant to get involved into a fight. Once you get her temper going, it’s not so good, though…

In general, I’m very interested in establishing a best friend, specific conflicts, awkward connections, etc. But again, I love putting twists on traditional connections and going outside the box with cookie cutter ones. But honestly I’m a huge sucker for incredibly important friendships. I’m a little hesitant to pinpoint particular desires for certain characters before there’s too many players, but I’m ~very~ interested in pack dynamics in general. I’d want to plot out how those specifically would shake out individually because I like to do very customized plotting. I think that Carmen would probably have moved into the farmhouse for a few years while she was getting her footing in town. However, I have an inkling that she appreciates peace and quiet, and decided to get her own place to sleep most nights- not that she’s averse to staying the night on the couch. I’d be super game for taking on Margaret’s roommate connection because that sounds like a hilarious idea, but all’s well if that doesn’t work out!

Picking up flowers to make the house more beautiful seemed like a simple task, but it was enough to clear her mind after finishing her chores around the house once the youngest ones were at school. It was one of the things she did just for fun, just because, just because she felt like it. While most people thought how ‘unfeminist’ it was to be the typical housewife or how little she tried to do something outside of home, Maya did more than what people did.

Like her mom, she was the one who made sure everyone was safe and happy under their roof and had something to eat every single day, and even if her cousin was the one in charge of the pack, she was respected by every single member. If it wasn’t for her, everything would be a mess and Maya knew that since the moment the responsibility fell on her. It seemed like a burden to everyone else, but she didn’t feel like it was at all. In fact, she loved it. She liked to take care of everyone, make sure things were okay, be around them and not only be the one who cooked for them or cleaned the house, but also someone they could trust and build a connection with.

It was true that she needed a drink sometimes when the sun was down to disconnect from everything if something bad happened within the pack, but simple things like picking up flowers, a walk in the woods or reading a book did the job most of the time. Her life was as simple as it could be in a small town like Wolford Falls, uncomplicated and happy. It was all Maya wished for, actually.

All she could think of as she looked around was about how lucky she was for it.

SPECIFIC CONNECTIONS

carmen / since maya takes care of the pack and takes the youngest ones to school, she definitely knows their history teacher. this is up for discussion, but i see them as two people who have developed a friendship outside of the typical parental figure/teacher connection.

margaret / despite the supposed rivalry between werewolves and vampires, i can see them being friends, or at least acquaintances. maya doesn’t know her very well, but she knows her from her visits to the er or from seeing her around wolford falls and she wants to get to know her better.

GENERIC CONNECTIONS

polar opposites / maya and this person can’t be more different in every single way. it would be interesting to see them interact and see what happens. whether it ends up in an unexpected friendship between them or something else it’s up for discussion.

crush / someone maya has a crush on since they met them. i can see her having a crush on someone she has known for a while whether they’re from the pack or not, and whether it’s mutual or not it’s up for discussion.

Why had he agreed to come to this again? With so many people around, it was practically suffocating and honestly, no turkey leg or slice of pumpkin pie was worth all of this fall festival chaos. As a familiar face smiled at him, nodding her head and giving him a gracious hello, he was reminded. Right, he was here because he was the Sheriff and apparently it was his job to be a part of the town’s events. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. He should be there to look in on things, certainly, but if the festival needed security for any reason, there were plenty of deputies that he could have assigned to the area. No, he was there because he needed to make sure that he was seen. Most people knew of him, certainly, but he also needed to know them. He needed to commit every resident’s face to memory and be able to approach them. He needed to foster a sense of confidence within them towards himself so that, when the time came, they would know exactly who to case their vote for major for.

Another nod in his direction and this time Chace managed to lift his hand up in a small wave. He was fairly certain that he remembered that man, a florist, he believed? Not that he ever really frequented the flower shops, but he would pass by every now and again. As he continued on down the long rows of booths and stands of people trying to market their wares, he was overcome with a sensational smell up ahead. Okay, maybe he wasn’t a huge fan of the crowds or the way everyone seemed to be perfectly content being stuffed together as they were, but he did enjoy the pies. If he had to be there, he could at least take solace in the deliciousness waiting for him up ahead.

No sooner had he resolved that he was going to eat his weight in pie than was he stopped by an elderly woman. “Have you seen the flower beds in the park lately, Sheriff Knight? They just keep getting torn right up, no matter how many times they’re planted. It’s like dogs are coming and ripping them clean out of the ground. It’s a tragedy really.” So badly did he want to say that she needed to reevaluate her definitely on a tragedy, but he supposed in a town where very little happened, it made sense that someone could feel this way. Though, the thought of someone actually believing it was dogs was amusing. Then again, perhaps that was nicer to think than the more likely conclusion that their own neighbor was destroying the mediocre arrangement of flowers that graced their park.

“I actually hadn’t seen that, Mrs. Grimshaw, but I’ll be sure to look into it. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. We can’t have our lovely park flowers being ripped out.” He offered her a smile, even if the entire thing made him want to hurl inside his mouth. Still, it was necessary. He needed these people to like him and to believe that he was the right person for the job. He needed them to feel like he could truly lead the town when the time was right, even if it started with protecting a bunch of stupid flowers. “I’ll look right into it once all of this festival business wraps up. One thing at a time, you know. If you start too many things and never finish one, well you just end up half-assing all of it. At least that’s what my mom used to tell me.”

Anything to get away. He just needed to get away and the moment he saw his chance, he did. Chace quickly said his goodbyes and practically ran towards the booth, hastily handing over his money for a slice of pie and running away. Part of him felt like a raccoon, scampering off with his goods to have a quick snack, but how else was he supposed to enjoy himself with a bit of piece and quiet? As boring as the town could be, quiet had never been a description he would give to the area, not now. Not ever.

What I look forward to bringing is an adorably idiotic perfectionist who is a closeted dork and just wants to have a few people super close to him, someone who truly loves him, and to be the mayor so he can run things the way he feels they should be run.

I can also always provide some pretty fun character drama and great brotps, so that’s a blast.
