I'm the girl who is lost in space, the girl who is disappearing always, forever fading away and receding farther and farther into the background. Just like the Cheshire cat, someday I will suddenly leave, but the artificial warmth of my smile, that phony, clownish curve, the kind you see on miserably sad people and villains in Disney movies, will remain behind as an ironic remnant. I am the girl you see in the photograph from some party someplace or some picnic in the park, the one who is in fact soon to be gone. When you look at the picture again, I want to assure you, I will no longer be there.

Summer in Neu-Friedenwald and the small town is buzzing. With the annual tourist season about to begin – not only the most exciting but also the most lucrative time of year –, crowned by the particularly special occasion of the town’s 70th anniversary celebration, the community is brushing up to appear in the best light when they open their gates to the world outside.

The merry preparations are disturbed by the sudden news of the town’s golden girl Cecilia’s untimely death. Local authorities immediately declare it “a tragic accident” but as soon as the community has shaken off the initial shock and paralysis, the talking starts and in no time, the first rumors are circulating. Obviously out of his depth, Neu-Friedenwald’s mayor calls in the Bundeskriminalamt for help. As the investigations unfold, suspicion and distrust corrode the community more and more, and the first cracks in the suburban paradise’s veneer begin to show. The young woman’s death has torn a deep, gaping wound into the fabric of the town. Triggered by the violent act, the idyllic facade is crumbling fast and in the wake of this destabilization, the inhabitants’ perfect masks are slipping: Neu-Friedenwald’s carefully constructed structures collapse, order is usurped by chaos and people’s abysses begin to come to light. Slowly but surely, the nightmare lurking behind the town’s American Dream rears its ugly head and takes possession of Neu-Friedenwald.
