Through the Portal

David was doing his best to help protect his wife and his daughter, with whom he had only just been reunited, from the Wraith while Regina attempted to make Jefferson's hat open a portal to their land.  He could only keep this up for so long; it was after Regina, and it wouldn't stop until it got her.  

"Hurry!" he urged, brandishing the flaming broom at the Wraith.  His makeshift torch was dwindling rapidly; soon, it would be out completely.  

Without a second to spare, Regina managed to make the hat form a portal, sucking the Wraith into it.  Just as it was about to disappear, though, Emma got dragged into the portal with it.  

David didn't pause for a second; he threw himself in after his daughter, reaching for her in the portal.

"Emma!" he yelled, grabbing her hand, just before they hit the ground, landing in a place that very definitely existed.

Verse Update

Verse | Not Quite Home AU.  David was the one to go through the portal with Emma, not Snow.  They have to find their way back to Storybrooke, but will they manage?

But it wasn’t until I saw my mother’s ring on her finger that I knew in my heart there was no other woman I would ever love.

"I know, Snow," he said softly, offering her a small smile.  "I do, too."  One of his biggest regrets was not being able to take care of his family the way that he should have.  They relied on him, and he should have done a better job being there for them.  

"And while we may not get over it," he started, taking Snow's hands, "we can forgive each other.  If we hadn't sent her through....., well, I would have died and everyone else would have been cursed, forever."

David looked up at his wife’s words, offering her a small smile.  ”She still needs us.  She just doesn’t need us in the way that we need her.”  Emma didn’t really need parents as much as he and Snow wanted to be her parents.  ”We just have to be patient, Snow.  She’ll come to us sooner or later.”  He hoped.

"Do I need an excuse to visit my little girl?"  So she was far from little, but she would always be David's little Emma, even though he hadn't been there for her when she was younger.

David just laughed at Emma's words, shaking his head.  "Probably," he agreed, leaning over to kiss the top of her head, "But what kind of father would I be if I let my little girl fight the flu with no one to help?"  

To be honest, this was really the first time he'd had the chance to do anything like this for his daughter.  It had been so long since she'd been little, and they hadn't been there for her.  The least they could do was be there for her and take care of her now.  

He squeezed the shoulder under his hand gently as she sat back up.  "Of course I'm sure.  We've got your prescriptions coming, and that'll help, too."  While they might want to go back to the Enchanted Forest, antibiotics were one of this world's greatest magics.

"Now, do you want me to stay and read you a story while you eat," he teased, "or do you want me to let you eat in peace so that you can get some more rest?"

A little bug.

"Dad, I’m gonna get you sick if you keep checking on me every five minutes." Emma said as she laid her head on his shoulder. She knew even with her saying this, one of her parents would come check on her.

"Its been four days and I feel like I’m dying." She said as she closed her eyes, her head still on his shoulder. She had seen him set the soup down and a small smile formed on her lips. "When you leave the room will you thank her for me?" 

It was times like these when she was grateful that she had over protective parents, and that Henry could go to Regina’s so she didn’t get him sick. “Are you sure? ‘Cause at  this rate I’ll be sick all month.” She said before taking her head off his shoulder.
