Personally I’m of the belief that Havers felt the same for the Captain. Purely because you don’t have to look hard or squint to see how fond he is of Cap.

When the other soldiers stationed at Button House are laughing at the Captain’s response to France’s surrender, Havers is smiling too, but not out of malice. You can see that it is fondness. The look and the line that follows are gentler than most other soldiers would’ve been.

And when they’re alone? There are people that have done close up comparisons of Havers’ expressions of this scene, people that are far more eloquent than me, but Peter’s portrayal is absolutely incredible.

Coming from someone who studies drama and acting, micro expressions are sometimes quite hard to master without looking scripted but Peter makes it look so easy.

To me, both Peter and Ben’s performances come across as men that were equally in love with each other, but Ben was playing someone who was too scared to acknowledge what love felt like to him, and Peter was playing someone who was scared to find out if his love was reciprocated
