I don't know why I keep thinking the cricket report was written on the 28th of may, but it WASN'T!

On the 20th May 1940, The Captain wrote an unbelievably outrageous description about his second in command playing cricket. A fanfic one might even say.... 85 years ago, The Captain was HEAD OVER HEELS for Havers and it really did show. Happy 85 years of old men yaoi fanfic!

Thinking about how Thomas and the Captain are two sides of the same coin.

Both are inept in their chosen fields, but they put their heart and soul into it. Each is mocked by (most of) his peers, but yearns for their respect.

One lives in a world that encourages him to embrace emotional expression and individuality; the other lives in a world that forces him to repress them, stripping him of all identity but his rank.

Each of them is loved by someone who finds his idiosyncrasies charming, even as everyone else laughs. And yet, the pursuit of this love leads each to an ignominious death.

The Captain dies having learned that his feelings are requited, with Havers by his side. Thomas dies alone, believing that Isabelle no longer loves him.

They are a soldier who died from a broken heart, and a poet who died from a gunshot.

even though I know it would emotionally destroy me I need to know what happened just after the Captain died. I need to know what happened to Havers. Did the other soldiers say anything to him? WHAT HAPPENED!!! TELL MEE!!

And a WIP Wednesday BBC Ghosts CapHavers fix-it I have been working on for months, so many months. Someday I will be free. That day is not today.

Oh noooo the cricket report went missing whoooo could have taken it?

“Some show, eh Havers?”  The Captain greeted him at the door of his office.  “Steady on, I’ve forgotten one of my pipes.  I’ll be back in a moment.”

Anthony looked around.  A stack of paperwork, ready to be sorted, sat on one side of the desk.  Another requisition form.  Munitions this time.  And next to that…

Cricket Report.  The Captain must have done it in the evening, Anthony picking it up, reading it over, his face beginning to burn.  He didn’t actively seek the spotlight, yet here was James, writing about him as though he was some star athlete.  They hadn’t even won the match.

And yet.

He kept reading.  Yes, it was a little embarrassing, or it would be if anyone else read it, but to be so lauded, to have such singular attention from James.  At the very least it answered the lingering question.  His fingers traced the paragraphs.

Footsteps approached, the fast businesslike sound belonging to only one person.  Anthony folded the report up quickly, tucking it into his jacket.  Would he notice the report was missing?
