Gongchan News1 Interview [ARTICLE TRANSLATION]
Tumblr media
I did combine both of the interviews into one. But enjoy!
- Marisa
Original articles:
Part 1 | Part 2
B1A4’s Gongchan has said that the year 2023 will be busier and a year of growth. It’s a promise to go further as both an actor and a singer.
The Gongchan who is working hard will have his first step in the release of the BL (Boys Love) drama, ‘Unintentional Love’ (written by Shin Ji An, directed by Jang Eui Soon) that will be released this year. Based on Pibi’s webtoon, it’s the story of two people whose relationship started out as a lie and later developed into true love, a recovery of trust romance. The country’s first BL drama was ‘Where Your Eyes Linger’ and this drama will be a collaboration between Shin Ji An, who wrote the script, and the director for ‘Peach of Time,’ Jang Eui Soon.
In this project, Cha Seo Won plays the role of Yoon Tae Joon and Gongchan took on the role of Ji Won Young. Specifically, Gongchan is Ji Won Young, an employee of the general affairs department of a large company that has to win the heart of the president’s favorite artist, Yoon Tae Joon, if he wants to be reinstated. Ji Won Young is someone who has a bright nature and is a social butterfly who likes to help people and always has people surrounding him. It’s a story of how he meets Yoon Tae Joon and becomes entangled with him when Won Young is suddenly on the verge of losing his job.
Gongchan has steadily built up his filmography as he started acting in 2015 with the web dramas ‘Delicious Romance,’ ‘Dear My Name,’ and ‘Mokkoji Kitchen.’ He’s also appeared in the MBC Every1’s ‘Dating is Annoying, but I Hate Being Lonely!’ among others. He’s back after around two years with a new project. Although Gongchan was unfamiliar with the BL genre, of which has yet to become popularized, he said that he was drawn to the authentic story and thanks to that, he was able to immerse himself well.
He is also a member of the boy group B1A4 and has done activities as an artist. He has said that he wishes to meet fans as the complete B1A4 when fellow member Sandeul is discharged from the military. Gongchan continued by saying, “A steady person, I want to become someone who does not let go of their goal and who continues to run. There are times when I’ll rest, but my goal is to have fun and be happy while promoting or being active.”
Gongchan plans to spend the Lunar New Year holiday with his family this year. They’re planning on having a peaceful holiday by making jeon [Korean pancakes] together and giving his grandmother New Year’s bows. He also brightly conveyed New Year’s greetings to News1 readers. I recently met Gongchan for this interview.
Tumblr media
How are you planning to spend the Lunar New Year holiday this year?
My family is going to all get together and we’re going to make jeon [Korean pancakes] together and also give our New Year’s bows to my grandmother.
‘Unintentional Love Story’ is going to be released this year. If you were going to describe the project?
It’s based on a webtoon. A relationship that started with a lie turns into a true love romance. I play the role of Ji Won Young, an employee of the general affairs department of a large company. I am excitedly waiting for it to be released this year.
Have you read and referred to the original webtoon?
I read the webtoon while preparing for the role and thought that Ji Won Young and I have a lot of similarities. Despite having a bright personality, he doesn’t tell others when he’s having a hard time. It touched me because it felt like I was looking at myself. Isn’t the original version very popular? I paid a lot of attention to the details while filming in order to make the character seem similar. Won Young is a bright fellow, so I really thought a lot about what would work best to express his kind of energy.
Tumblr media
How did you come to join the project?
I had received an offer for the role of Ji Won Young. They had said that my image resembled that of his, so they decided to contact me. After I received the offer, I immediately read the project and thought, “It’s so interesting, it would be even more interesting as a drama.” I didn’t want to miss the opportunity. Thankfully, the director and the head of the production company looked at me favorably during our meeting and my appearance was decided upon right away.
It’s difficult to say that the BL genre has yet to become popular in South Korea. It’s a time when related works are now just appearing, so did you hesitate to appear? Did you reference any other works?
It is true that I was previously unfamiliar with the BL genre. However, when looking at ‘Unintentional Love Story,’ I liked the story of how two people with painful scars slowly open their hearts as they get to know one another. Therefore I decided to try to focus on the script and act from that. Before filming, I tried to look back on and refer to the drama ‘Semantic Error,’ the movie ‘Call Me By Your Name,’ the Japanese drama ‘Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You A Wizard,’ and others.
Tumblr media
How was it acting with Cha Seo Won?
When I heard that Seo Won-hyung was cast, I thought he was the same as Yoon Tae Joon in the webtoon and also thought that the production team really delicately found the character. I saw him in ‘I Live Alone’ and also in a daily drama that I watched with my mother [t/n: I think the daily might be Second Husband]. When I first saw him, he was like a celebrity (Laughs). It was difficult in the beginning, but isn’t he quirky and cute? He’s very playful and the atmosphere on the set was good, so we became close quickly. Even when filming, he guided me a lot and we also cheered each other up through laughter. All of the actors became very comfortable with each other so it’s a pity that we can’t promote together because he enlisted.
What is a point to observe about the project?
It depicts Won Young and Tae Joon growing closer and closer, so pay close attention to each of their detailed emotions in each situation. There’s also going to be a tickling excitement about it.
Tumblr media
What kind of evaluation do you wish to receive after ‘Unintentional Love Story’ is released?
I wish to hear the people that watch this project recommend it and say “The actor Gongchan here is pretty good.” I would be very grateful if I were able to become an actor that people know about.
Tumblr media
You started working as an actor in 2015. What was the reason you started?
I was originally very greedy to act. When I was actually able to try it, I was able to see that it had a different charm than standing on stage and I therefore gradually fell in love with it. I’m trying to work on at least one project every year.
It seems that there are roles you’re greedy for
I want to play a villain someday. I really like the drama ‘Bad Guys’ [t/n: a 2014 drama] and want to play a character like Park Hae Jin’s role.
Tumblr media
You’ve been active as B1A4 for a long time. I’m curious about the secret of your teamwork
I see CNU-hyung and Sandeul-hyung quite often. We talk about recent updates, our daily lives, and about the album we’ll release later. It seems like the secret of how we can last for so long is our humble virtue towards each other. Even when talking about things that need to be improved, we don’t take it too heavily. Although I’m overflowing with passion when faced with work, I’m the type who receives it well.
Aren’t B1A4 on a break due to fellow member Sandeul’s military service? Are you not greedy for a solo album?
I am greedy, but I’m too afraid. (Smiles). It’s become late because I think about things such as whether the concept that I want to do will come out well.
Tumblr media
Sandeul will be discharged in August, will we be able to see a B1A4 album?
I want to quickly come back as a complete group when Sandeul-hyung is discharged. I wish to have one come out within this year, but nothing has been specifically decided upon.
Aren’t you also actively communicating with your fans?
Communicating with the fans is so much fun. Similar to how real friends communicate, it’s nice to hear about what the fans are doing. I also like to share what I’m doing with them. Because the fans seem to like that, I tend to communicate with them a lot.
What is your goal?
A steady person, I want to become someone who does not let go of their goal and who continues to run. There are times when I’ll rest, but my goal is to have fun and be happy while promoting or being active
Tumblr media
What kind of year would you like 2023 to be?
I hope it’ll be a year where I’m busier, where I’m growing, and a year of fun activities. I’m already looking forward to this year because even if there’s a lot of work, I don’t think it will be hard.
Would you like to say Lunar New Year greetings to News1 readers?
I hope you have a pleasant holiday while eating plenty of delicious food. Happy New Year!

B1A4, OMG, ONF Google Drive Folders Masterlist (Updated December 6, 2022)
So if any of you have been on my Twitter, you may know that I have (a lot of) Google Drive folders holding different performances that I’ve subbed for B1A4, OMG, and ONF and this here is the Masterlist for them having the links to the folders and describing what they all contain.
If anyone has any questions, feel free to reach out because I know this is a lot of stuff and it may be hard to find things. The only folder that doesn’t specifically have what’s in it is the Special Folder. But the first section is all of the live performances and then the second consists of the subbed videos that I have and that are uploaded.
I’ll be updating this from time to time, too, so this isn’t the final list and I don’t think it ever will be.
But let me know if you have any questions. Thanks to everyone and enjoy!

B1A4 Photo Music Korea [ARTICLES TRANS]
I put all of the articles into one since the beginning was all the same. It just went over 3 questions each, but it seems like maybe they’ll be an interview when the November issue is released?
Anyway, enjoy!
- Marisa
Tumblr media
Part 1
Photo Music Korea, a full-fledged K-Pop magazine together with the depth of journalism and pictorials held a special interview with popular boy group B1A4 ahead of its November release. Photo Music Korea prepared many questions and were impressed with B1A4’s depth and sincerity when answering them.
When asked about what they would like to do first when COVID-19 disappears, all of B1A4, CNU, Sandeul, and Gongchan agreed that they wanted to do a face-to-face concert with the fans.
CNU had said, “We had a virtual concert last year but it was very empty because there weren’t any BANAs,” and continued by saying, “I really miss the concerts we could have with BANAs.”
Sandeul also stated, “I wish that COVID-19 would end soon and that the day we can communicate with fans at a concert can come.”
Tumblr media
As expected, Gongchan expressed his longing for the fans by saying, “I would like it even if it weren’t actually a stage. I really miss the fans. I want to be able to sing together, talk about how we’ve been, and tell stories.”
B1A4 picked Korean traditional music and rock ballads as the type of music genre/style they want to try in the future.
CNU said, “I’ve recently been listening to a lot of Korean traditional music and I’ve realized once again just how charming our sound can be.” He further noted, “I want to try music that combines together with Korean traditional music one day.”
Sandeul stated, “I sang a lot of rock ballads when I was younger but if I were to sing them now, it would definitely be a different feeling so I want to try it.”
Finally, Gongchan answered, “I want to try a song that has a lyrical and emotional melody.” Further explaining, “I want to do a song that could be healing to the listener.”
 Part 2
When they were asked about what musician they would like to collaborate with, CNU chose Yang Dong Geun (YDG).
He explained, “There are many musicians that I want to collaborate with, but right now, I think of Yang Dong Geun-sunbae the most. I’ve bene a fan of him since I was younger and when speaking of him, I think he’s someone who really embraces the word ‘cool.’”
Sandeul chose Lee Mu Jin as the musician he’d like to collaborate with.
Sandeul said, “I like the song ‘Traffic Light’ and personally, the feeling of the songs that he’s written perfectly matches my taste. I want to do a song in that kind of pleasant style.”
Gongchan chose fellow group member CNU as the one he wants to collaborate with.
He described, “I’ve done a lot of duets with Sandeul-hyung but none with CNU-hyung. I want to try a collaboration with CNU-hyung because I think we’d be able to show a new kind of feeling that’s different from the duets I’ve done with Sandeul-hyung.”
Tumblr media
Part 3
When asked about new hobbies that they’ve recently acquired, CNU responded that he is obsessed with camping cars these days.
CNU explained, “I have a hobby of watching camping car videos. I’ve always liked riding in a car but it was the first time that I realized how attractive they could be. I want to buy one and go camping one day.”
Sandeul told us, “Recently I’ve been cautious about going out of the house so I’ve started the hobby of ‘Becoming One with the Couch.’” He laughed as he described, “I’m relaxing at home, taking care of myself and spending time in my own way.”
Gongchan said, “It’s not a new hobby of mine, but recently I often go for walks by the Han River.” Sandeul further stated, “Because we can’t go far in a time like this, taking a leisurely stroll along the Han River changes my mood and is healing.”

B1A4 Sandeul Has Joined The Lineup for Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha OST…Expected to be an Emotional Style [ARTICLE TRANS]
Tumblr media
B1A4 group member Sandeul, who possesses an outstanding singing ability, has joined the lineup for tvN’s Saturday and Sunday drama, Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’s OST.
On October 1, Stone Music Entertainment, who is producing the OST for the drama, stated, “Sandeul has an excellent singing ability that freely crosses over genres. He is in charge of singing the 6th OST for Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha titled, “Your Appearance That Remains In My Memory.””
Sandeul’s “Your Appearance That Remains In My Memory” showcases the essence of his romantic vocals in order to capture the emotions of the listeners. It’s a song that has a pleasant folk sound and a melody line that you can easily sing along with.
With its light guitar and drum sounds, it’s a song about how even though two individuals might be far away from one another, the other person always remains as a good memory creating a clear mind and bright atmosphere. However, unlike the overall mood of the song, there are twists with the lyrics like “My heart that was neatly put away is a mess, it reverted back and is different, calling for you” which brings the expectation of being able to feel the vague and sad emotions together.
This song was inserted into the 10th episode of Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha that aired on September 26 and garnered a hot response. In that episode, Yoon Hye Jin (Shin Min Ah) went to Seoul with her longtime friend Pyo Min Seon (Gong Min Jung) yet couldn’t enjoy herself as she kept thinking about Gong Doo Shik (Kim Seon Ho). After the rain that happened, Yoon Hye Jin came to her own realization and started moving her feet to see Gong Doo Shik one step at a time.
“Your Appearance That Remains In My Memory” represents Gong Doo Shik and Yoon Hye Jin’s heartfelt feelings that they have later realized they have for one another. It is expected to give a great and lasting impression for the viewers. Sandeul’s deep emotional and appealing voice that will be expressing “Your Appearance That Remains In My Memory” for Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha’s OST Part 6 will be released on October 3 at 6pm on all major domestic music sites.

B1A4 Gongchan, Casted in Web Drama ‘Mokkoji Kitchen’, transformed into a chef that’s not interested in dating [ARTICLE TRANS]
[t/n: I’m not sure if they’re using Mokkoji to mean like together or if it’s a name so I’m just going to keep referring to it as simply Mokkoji]
B1A4’s Gongchan has been confirmed to be the male lead for the web drama Mokkoji Kitchen by WhyNot Media.
On August 27, WM Entertainment stated, “Gongchan was casted in the web drama Mokkoji Kitchen that is planning on having its first broadcast on September 6.”
Mokkoji Kitchen is a drama about Chef Moo Young, who runs a one-person fusion Korean restaurant and Ro In, a college student who is also considered a restaurant navigation system. It’s a sweet and salty love recipe that follows the two of them who are tied together by an accidental mistake and end up sharing food and filling their hearts. The drama is produced as part of the 2021 Hallyu Living Culture Together Korea that is used to spread Korean culture around the world and is hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (Minister Hwang Hee) and the Korean International Cultural Exchange Promotion Agency (director Jung Gil Hwa).
Tumblr media
Gongchan transforms into the role of Moo Young, the singular chef of the fusion Korean restaurant Mokkoji Kitchen. He’s a character that is serious, diligent, and responsible when in front of food, but in every day life, even for the stuff he knows how to do, he’s a man that’s not interested in dating yet has a reverse charm. Therefore expectations are high for Gongchan’s impressive performance and for an exciting romance.
Previously, Gongchan appeared in a number of projects such as MBC Every1’s ‘Dating is Annoying But I Hate Being Lonely,’ the movie ‘Mister Boss,’ and the web dramas ‘To My Name,’ ‘The Probability of Meeting Romance When Traveling Season 1.5,’ and ‘Delicious Romance.’ He has solidified his position as an actor by perfectly expressing his characters with his own color.
The web drama Mokkoji Kitchen, starring Gongchan, will be released on September 6 at 10am on KOK TV’s YouTube and Mokkoji Korea’s YouTube channel.

B1A4′s Rollin’ with Comments Video
youtube
I did my best to translate the comments that were included in this video. There is the possibility that I could’ve misunderstood something because of the slang. The time in parenthesis is how long ago the comment was posted, according to the screenshot during the video.
Thanks!

-          It’s really funny that the algorithm is floating this Rollin’ around, too kekekeke I do like this Rollin’ too (1 month ago)
-          0:23 a true pro idol fixing their microphone (5 days ago)
-          This song strangely doesn’t have a season (3 weeks ago) [t/n: how songs typically sound according to what season they’re released in, darker slow beat songs for fall/winter and upbeat happy songs for summer]
-          Did you know?? The kids that were born when B1A4 debuted are going to be in 5th grade… kekeke oh wait, it’s 4th grade (1 month ago; edited)

-          Skilled kpopers can’t erase B1A4 from their lives,,, kekekekeke (6 months ago)

-          Look at the spacing kekekeke This is really crazy keke (5 months ago)
-          Looking at it now, they were really a visual group (10 months ago)
-          Even when they first appeared, they were a good looking rookie group (5 months ago)
-          Now I laugh just by looking at Sandeul’s face…however, he sings extremely well (3 weeks ago)
-          Brave Girl’s Rolling completely matches the feeling of a summer day at the beach whereas B1A4’s Rollin’ is like an after autumn late summer’s dinner (1 month ago)
-          You’ll regret it if you only listen to this song… Ah, I’ll do better now… I’m going to watch it no matter what happens… (9 months ago)

-          If this song climbed the chart in the summer… It’s really a summer song (11 months ago)
-          Acknowledged. Who hasn’t listened to this masterpiece (9 months ago)
-          Everyone is refreshing and this is a summer song but when the song came out it was about early autumn so I think about when I listened to it while walking to school in the cold early morning air (9 months ago)
-          ? I watched Rolling and the algorithm also recommended this Rollin’. The song is good so I guess thank you algorithm…? (1 month ago)
-          Their immature concepts in their early debut weren’t easy, but they were a group that did it… (1 year ago)
-          But in their early debut, they were a group that had big trouble if their stylist was juvenile (9 months ago)
-          Jinyoung’s voice is really fascinating. It’s like an electric guitar or something like that (10 months ago)
-          Music + choreography + clothes. The promotions where all 3 areas were perfect (9 months ago)
-          You should’ve said that this song was going to be your last stage! (9 months ago)

B1A4 ‘Road’ Talk Translation
youtube
I also translated the beginning talk of this video where they pretty much briefly talked about their feelings about it being their 10th year.
CNU: Sandeul-ah, you made all of this?
Sandeul: Yeah
CNU: You prepared all of this?
Sandeul: I made everything, all of this. It’s all made by hand
Gongchan: Handmade?
Sandeul: It is. There’s only a board if you go to the back
CNU: Really?
Sandeul: I made it perfectly
Gongchan: There’s someone walking back and forth, though
Sandeul: Huh? Someone’s there?
Gongchan: What’s happening
CNU: By the way, why did you put this together and gather us?
Sandeul: It’s already been 10 years
CNU: Ah, that’s right
Sandeul: 10 years is a celebration. I also wanted to talk about how the past 10 years were, which is why I put this together. How is it? It’s been 10 years
CNU: I really like it
Sandeul: I’m getting goosebumps. It’s kind of like…what is this? It feels like time folded itself and is moving forward
CNU: Oh, folded itself and is moving forward
Sandeul: Kind of like that power to bend time and space. With that power, the path folds while you’re going along it. So I think time is doing the same thing
CNU: Your impression of the past 10 years is like the power to bend time and space
Sandeul: It’s not my impression. It’s my feeling, what I’m feeling right now
CNU: Like it went by that quickly
Sandeul: That’s right
CNU: That’’s why, in order to commemorate our 10th anniversary, we’re releasing a song
Sandeul: That’s right
CNU: On the day of our 10th anniversary, we’ll be releasing the song ’10 Times.’ It was quite fun even when preparing the song, right?
Sandeul: When we decided on the title of ’10 Times,’ the thing that I liked the most was that it really felt similar to my heart. Like 10 years. It’s actually that but we use ’10 Times,’ but just like the title, the time felt that short. But that time to me is really precious. Furthermore, the 10 years that we’ve spent together with BANA is also really precious and we made the song because we wanted to keep that. It has a deep meaning and I really like it
CNU: Gongchan, what do you think? Your feelings on 10 years
Gongchan: I still don’t believe that it’s our 10th anniversary
Sandeul: There is that
Gongchan: It’s because I’m always stuck to your side
Sandeul: It’s kind of like I don’t even believe that I’m 30 right now
Gongchan: That’s right. Even for me, I don’t believe your ages. Whenever I go somewhere and they ask me how old I am. I’m 29, right
Sandeul: You’re like 30 at that point
Gongchan: Oh, that surprised me. But it’s like I debuted when I was 19 and I’m 29?
CNU: Yeah, that’s pretty fascinating. I first saw Gongchan when he was 17
Gongchan: You did
CNU: He was 17 and he’s already become 29
Gongchan: It’s like as much as we can feel the time going by quickly, the times that I’ve spent together with you guys has been really happy. What should I say. It’s like, I’ve never thought about how many days it’s been or how much time has passed. I just think of the times we’re together
CNU: Everyone is very happy and there are a lot of fun memories so much to the extent that I don’t know how time has gone by. It felt like it went by really quickly. I think the past 10 years have been really fun. Of course there were various things that were difficult, but when I look back on it, I really had a lot of fun. I don’t think the road we walked on was in vain so I feel kind of proud
Sandeul: Right. When something was fun and happy, the time passed quickly
CNU: It did
Sandeul: Rather than having any regrets, I think I’m more proud
CNU: Because there was that 10 years, and there’s this moment right now. I do think that we did well and am proud
Sandeul: Ah, I like this. Talking in front of a fire makes for a really nice atmosphere. Let’s…
CNU: Therefore! Now. The road we’ve walked on is really… We have to move on, right?
Sandeul: Should we just sing?
CNU: Ah, that’s right
Sandeul: Should we sing a song? The mood is pretty good
CNU: Let’s make it
Sandeul: Give me a glass of makgeolli
CNU: The road that we’ve walked on is really…
Sandeul: Again, again
CNU: So, the road that we’ve walked on, each and every step has a deep meaning
Sandeul: It does
CNU: And I think that it’s a precious time
Sandeul: That’s right
CNU: Do you remember singing ‘Road’ at our concert before?
Sandeul: I do. In the Documentary?
CNU: There’s that
Sandeul: We did sing it in the past and we did sing it recently. Certainly, when we sing ‘Road,’ I’m choked up a bit
CNU: That’s true
Sandeul: The song ‘Road’ is like that a bit. It’s like all of my memories, past and present, come to mind
Gongchan: They do
Sandeul: Like from when I first began to sing, when we first met, when we had activities together, and currently. It’s like all of those feelings within them come to mind
CNU: The fans probably feel the same way
Sandeul: I think you just get choked up while singing that song
CNU: And the feeling from when we first sang that song until now could be different
Sandeul: It is, it is
CNU: We can look forward to how we sing ‘Road.’ So then while thinking about that time, should we sing ‘Road’?
Gongchan: I think that’s a good idea
CNU: ‘Road’?
Sandeul: That was really timid. It really was. I can’t say anything
Gongchan: But the mood has become like this
CNU: That’s burning everything right now. I’m really afraid

WM Acquisition Thoughts
Let me preface this by saying that I’m no expert in business matters, let alone business matters in South Korea, and that this opinion comes from a longtime standing fan of WM Entertainment. Of course we’ll probably never actually know why this acquisition happened or why it came about but I just wanted to give my thoughts about the subject and give some overview. Also, I apologize if this sounds like a report at some points, I did look up some information to make sure that I understood the subject matter as well. This also isn’t trying to defend or look down upon the decision. I’m just using this as my outlet to express and attempt to gain an understanding of the situation.
Also if anyone has any thoughts or opinions they want to share, feel free to reach out through any of the platforms that I’m on!
 Thanks! - Marisa
For those of you that may be unaware of the subject matter, it was released today that RBW had secured more than 70% of WM Entertainment’s stock and has thereby made WM Entertainment into a subsidiary of theirs. With the word subsidiary, the most common example that I’ve seen being thrown around is the agreement that happened with Woollim Entertainment and SM C&C. I think it’s important to note a couple of things with what happened there, though. Probably the most important would be that after signing the merger in 2013, it was actually undone and reversed in 2016 and Woollim went back to being its own independent company, kind of. So technically yes, they are a subsidy of SM C&C, I think, at this current moment but what happened in the beginning was a merger. Which brings me to my second point. It’s important to note that what happened between Woollim and SM C&C was actually a merger rather than an acquisition, which it doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen, at this moment, between WM and RBW. Obviously things could change since they do apparently own more than 70% of WM’s stocks now so unless something is outlined in their contract regarding that type of thing, I guess I’d just say that anything could happen.
But anyway, let me give a brief rundown on what happened between Woollim and SM C&C in 2013. First, I think we should understand what SM C&C actually is. That company itself is actually a subsidy of SM Entertainment that was acquired by them in 2012. The company currently operates as a production company, theatrical production company, and travel company but of course has actors, actresses, and various entertainers, it seems like mostly MCs or people who frequently or only do variety, signed to them. Anyway, so what happened is that the two actually merged to create Woollim Label. The definition of merger includes when companies join together to create a new single identity. SM C&C still was a company by itself, though, but I think it was just that Woollim was merged with a division within the company of SM C&C. See, this is a bit complicated, haha. But the creation of Woollim Label shows that it was a merger. However, in 2016, it was announced that SM C&C would be establishing Woollim Entertainment to handle its music business while they kept some of the stock, but not enough for a majority. What that essentially meant is that Woollim went back to being its own entertainment company in a way. SM C&C still has stock, but they weren’t merged together anymore. Rather, I think, Woollim then became more of a subsidy of SM C&C if that makes sense.
Enough of that, though, let’s get back to the current issue at hand.
I find it very interesting that RBW got 70% of WM’s stock. Typically, if whoever is buying the stock wants to become a majority holder, then they just buy enough to make them the majority. Most of the times it’s numbers that are nowhere near 70%. But those companies could be publicly trading their stock and the way that they get the majority is through buying out other companies and company individuals rather than the general public that might have that stock. That’s what different about WM, they’re a private company. That is something that could potentially change, though. Essentially with that 70%, RBW has the say to do what they want with WM but I’ll get into that later. But I think it’s strange that the number 70 just came about from somewhere. I wonder how WM’s stock was previously divided before this and if it was somewhere in the agreement about how the stocks should be divided upon the acquisition, I’m pretty sure it probably was. We’ll probably never know those details, but I don’t know, 70% is strange to me and doesn’t make sense.
To put an example on how strange I find the number 70, let me set up an example situation. I’m not saying that this is actually what happened but just putting in into perspective why I find it so strange. So let’s say that WM’s stocks are divided amongst the people in the company and investors in a way that would make achieving 51% possible, or even 50.1%. Anything over 50.1% would technically give RBW the majority hold over WM. Therefore, in an administrative sense, the majority that they get at 51% would be the same control that they get at the 70%. Maybe RBW aimed for a higher percentage to ensure that they would actually have control and that they wouldn’t somehow get removed as technically “being in charge” or if they got more financial rewards on having 70% of the stock. I don’t know much about the exchanging of stocks, especially in private companies, but 70% seems like a lot even if they want to securely have the majority in the company. If they weren’t comfortable with sitting in the 50% range, they probably could’ve gone to 60% but even then that seems a little high when, in most public companies, the majority is seemingly secured at around 25% – 30%. Once again, though, we’re talking about a private company, two private companies really, so things are definitely different. Also, with private companies, they don’t have to release information about any of this because the general public isn’t involved in any of their business proceedings.
So I’m not sure if it’s the same in South Korea, but at least for the United States, the private company is the one that approves the buying of the shares because they aren’t available on any public platform. It seems that for the most part, the people who have stocks in private companies are either the employees themselves or investors unless the company goes and seeks out people to purchase it. I think the case between the two companies is a little different. I already mentioned that WM is a private company but RBW is, too. RBW was also created from a merger back in 2015 between WA Entertainment and Rainbow Bridge Agency. Therefore I can only assume that either both companies sought out each other or one company went to the other with a deal. Either way, because they’re both private companies, there was no way for RBW to do an underhand deal on WM because WM would have to approve the stocks purchase in the first place. I never suspected that they did, but I thought I’d add it just in case anyone might’ve thought about that happening in the future.
But then another question would be whether they plan to go public or not, as in make themselves a public company where the general public can buy stocks. If that’s the case, then is the 70% that RBW bought going to be available to the public? Then is RBW going to get whatever profits or stuff is associated with those bought stocks? Or maybe to put it in a different perspective, they’re saying the 70% because they already sold the 30% back to the company? If that makes any sense. I guess what I’m trying to say is that maybe another way that this all went down was that RBW actually bought 100% of WM but left the 30% of stock out of it so that, I’m going to assume Lee Wonmin has that 30%, he is technically in charge of the subsidiary? But thinking about that and majorities, that probably wouldn’t hold true because then, if they go public, anyone could get over 30% of that WM stock and then be in the majority over Lee Wonmin. I guess it all just depends on whether RBW has any intention to go public or to make WM a public subsidiary, too.
I know this is getting long but I’ll just end on my opinion about what’s going to happen in the future with this whole acquisition and subsidy stuff.
Like I’ve said before, the 70% definitely makes me nervous a little. I’ve stated my reasons for why RBW might’ve gone for over the majority but at the same time, it just kind of doesn’t make sense why they would want 70% unless to make sure they have complete control. At the same time, they have said that WM will still be able to keep their management in place therefore I’m wondering if maybe the 70% has more to do with the future rather than the present? Technically, since RBW owns the majority of WM, they could essentially tell them to do whatever they want and they could, technically, dissolve WM as a company. They have the majority vote so it wouldn’t be illegal for them to do so, unless there’s some sort of law or certain requirements that must be met that I’m unaware of. I want to believe that there is probably something within their contract about that, though, that wouldn’t let for such a thing to happen. Still, it’s strange and I honestly always think that I’ll see the 70% as a strange number, especially in regard to stocks and shares of a singular company.
I know that it’s been reported that WM’s management is supposed to stay the same but I hope it remains that way. I know that there are some things about them that people, me included, are unhappy with them about but they do treat their artists well and have created unique brands that fit their groups. I guess the only underlying worrying thing would be that 70%. But as long as this stays as an acquisition, and WM remains as a subsidy of RBW, then I don’t see any sort of issue, as long as WM remains in control of their own artists.
Maybe this acquisition is beneficial for both parties. Like I stated before, if there is a decision to go public, they could get more capital overall since stock tends to go up when one company acquires another. Additionally, they may have better, or more, resources to work with since they’re technically working together. Hopefully there are some sort of strengths that each company have that they can work together to create an overall better situation, but that’s all stuff for the administrative side. On the side of the artists, from what it seems right now, it doesn’t seem like much is changing. The companies aren’t merging into one so it doesn’t seem like the artists are technically becoming labelmates. Sure, they may work together in the future, it would be easier to do that with this, but I still think that they’ll identify themselves separately and as part of separate companies since WM Entertainment still technically exists.
The closest example that I can think of where subsidies are involved is when people think about the Disney company or even about Comcast. Sure, both of those companies are huge and it doesn’t really relate to RBW’s acquisition of WM, but it helps to think about how subsidies work in a way, or at least I think so. Both Disney and Comcast are large companies that hold multiple companies underneath of them as subsidies, some that people might not even realize are owned by them. Take Comcast as the first example, I’m pretty sure one of their subsidies is NBC, which they actually 100% acquired in 2013 after only having the majority. Still, Comcast is the parent company. Parent companies are companies that own enough stock in other companies to be considered the majority. The other companies that are under a parent company are considered to be subsidiaries of the parent company. On the other hand, for Disney, they’re considered a parent company to ABC and even Pixar is considered to be their subsidiary.
I guess what I’m trying to show is that sometimes companies are able to govern and manage themselves even if they become acquired by a different company. The definition of a subsidy is that they operate as a separate and distinct corporation and that their obligations are not usually a liability of the parent company.
But I apologize for this being so long and congrats if you made it this far and my thoughts made any sense to you. I wasn’t really trying to get anywhere with this, I was just mainly just using it as an outlet to express my understanding of the situation at hand and maybe try to clear up things that others might have questions about. I wasn’t trying to look down upon or defend the decision made, just trying to gain a better understanding.
If anyone does have any questions, if you want to say something that I might’ve missed, or if you have your own opinions on the subject matter, please feel free to reach out to me on any of the platforms that I’m on! I’m always looking to hearing what other people have to say about the subject. Or even if there’s something else you want to talk about, feel free to ask away!
 Thanks! - Marisa

 Thank you.
*Instead of doing the typical note I put this down here because the explanation will be a little longer. So a doljapi is basically kind of like a fun way to sort of “predict” what a child might become in the future. The event is typically held on the baby’s first birthday and various items are set in front of the child. Some modern-day items are things like sports balls, money, gavel, stethoscope, microphone, pencil, etc. The items could be whatever the parents would want to sit in front of the child and they let the child pick an item. Finally, each item has a meaning attached to it, such as if a child picked up money, they’ll be wealthy in the future.

CNU “My songs match B1A4 completely…I can’t imagine anyone else singing them” [ARTICLE TRANS]
Here’s the translation to the recent interview that CNU did. You can definitely tell that they thought long and hard about what direction they want B1A4 to go in as a “new group” and you can also kind of see how he’s very sort of future facing in regard to the group. But, I hope you enjoy reading!
- Marisa
Part 1
Part 2
[t/n: I combined the two parts of the interview since the intros are the same for both parts]
Tumblr media
The third person for this [I-Mind] is CNU (30, real name Shin Dongwoo) of boy group B1A4. CNU is the eldest and is in charge of vocals and dance in the 11-year group, B1A4. Additionally, he directs and makes music within the group as a ‘Composition Idol.’
CNU started by writing lyrics for the title song of B1A4’s second mini album ‘Beautiful Target’ and then composed the ending track ‘Seoul’ on their second full length album ‘Who Am I.’ Since then, he’s made songs in various genres and has showcased a broad spectrum of music from the emotional ‘Drive,’ ‘Call Me’ that has a trendy beat, and even the intense ‘Nightmare.’
CNU, who has been recognized for his composing ability, earnestly participated in the production of B1A4’s fourth full studio album ‘Origine’ that was released in October of last year. About the album CNU said, “I think that this album will influence the next 10 or 20 years and we tried to do music that utilized our strengths.” As a result, CNU’s name was listed in the credits of 8 of the 12 songs on the fourth full length album including the title song ‘Like A Movie.’ Thanks to that, the group’s identity was able to be in the song and even their musical maturity could be higher.
What will the future musical direction of B1A4 be? CNU has said that he wanted B1A4 to not be confined within a mold in regard to music and that even if they receive negative comments, he wants to do various things sincerely saying that he wants to create “music that listeners can look forward to.” He was also determined when he said, “I will work harder with the sense of duty that even with music, it’s not just to let the public know but also so that it can be recorded on one page of K-Pop.”
News1 met with CNU, a ‘Composition Idol’ that is full of musical greed.
Tumblr media
It’s nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself. I’m also curious about your recent situation
I’m CNU, the eldest in B1A4 and I’m also in charge of the mother role. We made a comeback two months after I was discharged in August and we also had a concert in December. (Smile) I’m glad that we were able to do that as soon as I was discharged because it was my goal to release an album.
If you were to introduce a representative song of B1A4 as a Composition Idol?
I think it would be ‘Like A Movie,’ which is the title song of our fourth full length album that we released last October. It’s the title track of an album that we released after such a long time and I’m fond of it because it seems to fit with our situation.
I’m curious about your style of working
I tend to worry a lot when I wrote about songs so it’s a kind of progressive and aggressive style. It’s hard but it’s also fun to make songs.
Tumblr media
How did you first start composing?
I believed that there were a lot of things boiling inside of me and at first, the way to express those things was through song and dance. Then while completely working on the stage, I gradually had the desire to write songs so I tried to write lyrics. The first time I wrote lyrics was for the title song ‘Beautiful Target’ on our second mini album. I wrote the chorus and my part for the song. That then became my momentum and I thought that I wanted to continue writing songs. So by the second or third year, I bought equipment with my own money and started composing.
What was the first song you worked hard on?
That would be the song ‘Seoul’ that appeared as the last track on our second full length album ‘Who Am I.’ At that time I didn’t think like “I have to write a song!” It was a song that I was able to comfortably write without any expectations. It’s a side track that I wrote while thinking “Should I try to make one?” It’s a song that contains what I felt after coming to Seoul. Because all of the members are from the countryside, the city of Seoul has a different meaning to us. [t/n: in case anyone might not know, the countryside in this context is just referring to anyone that’s not from Seoul] The song details my honest feelings about how I felt when I came to Seoul to become a trainee and anyone that has lived in a foreign country will agree. It’s a place where I met my members when I had no one else to lean on and it’s a place where I was able to meet the fans after I debuted. It holds the message that in this cold city I only have the members and fans to lean on.
Since you didn’t specialize in it, you must’ve struggled and had difficulties while working
[t/n: specialize as in I’m assuming be formally trained in composing]
In the beginning it was really frustrating but I fortunately have a lot of good people around me. Artist Jooyoung is my good friend from my hometown. When I was making ‘Seoul,’ I asked him a lot of questions about music. At that time he told me about what kind of equipment I should buy and he taught me a lot about how to do the beats. I learned while doing that. Jooyoung and I were in a band club together in high school and the two of us promised to do a collaboration if we both succeeded in Seoul. (Smile) Later, I worked together with Jooyoung and his close friend Gureum to create ‘Drunk on Music’ and ‘Drive’ amongst others.
Tumblr media
You must’ve been really proud when your own self-made compositions were included in B1A4 albums
I really was. It was a time when I was into mannerisms. I had doubts about myself as a member of B1A4 wondering, “Am I doing well?” Although I was working hard since our debut, I wanted to be of more help to the team. I then did some composing and created some results. Thankfully the reactions of the members and the company was good and it was able to be put on an album. I really liked it back then.
Did you want to formally study composing afterwards?
Personally, I don’t think that the concept of learning art is established. Rather than studying about it, I think that you should share and empathize. It’s about a person who has experienced many things letting the one who hasn’t know the way. I have seen how a lot of composers have written their songs, but eventually I did what it was that I wanted to do. Their way isn’t mine. You can receive some sort of influence, but you have to create the result in your own style. When people listen to the songs that I’ve written so far, they say “This is CNU’s style.” I tried to make my own path very clear.
Tumblr media
When listening to the songs you made such as ‘Seoul,’ ‘Drive,’ ‘Nightmare,’ and ‘Sparkling,’ the genres and colors are all different. I can feel that you have a desire to create a variety of music
I didn’t intentionally attempt multiple genres, but I just made the music that I like and it could have been felt as being varied. Personally, ‘Nightmare,’ that was on our third full length album ‘Good Timing’ was a challenge for me as well. Who would’ve thought that B1A4 would do music that had a reggae beat? It was a style that I definitely wanted to try at least once and thankfully everyone liked it after I made it. I do have a greed and desire to broaden the spectrum with a variety of music.
Tumblr media
What would you say is the biggest feature or differentiated color of music that you’ve made?
That it seems like music that has been specially made for B1A4. That’s also the part that I consider the most important when writing a song. I always worry about how I should incorporate the member’s voices into a song. I can’t imagine other people singing it because it completely matches with our tone. That’s why I don’t even think about giving songs to others.
Tumblr media
Up until now you’ve only participated in the side tracks, but starting from your fourth full length album ‘Origine,’ you’ve become more proactive in creating songs. You participated in 8 of the songs and even made the title song therefore I’m curious about the process
It’s an album that took 3 years, from before I went to the army until it got released. The original goal was to announce it before my enlistment, but it took a long time because I went earlier than expected. I prepared the album all the way until I went to the army. I thought about it every day. When I was on vacation I wrote songs in the studio with a friend named Wooram and then I’d return and when I was on vacation again, I’d record. That’s the way I worked on it. I even asked the members to write songs and participate in creating the album. Personally, it was important because I thought about the album as something that will influence the next 10, 20 years of B1A4 so I thought about the direction. After thinking about it, we tried various things by using our strength as an ever-changing group. Even while feeling the weight of the year, we made a lot of effort for different music that will be further anticipated in the future. [t/n: I’m pretty sure the year that they’re talking about is the year that they became 3]
In the process of creating the album, was there no difference in opinion from Sandeul or Gongchan?
It matched well with the members. Although there were times when our opinions were slightly different, our desired directions and flows were the same. And because the company also agreed with our opinions, we were able to work while receiving more strength.
Tumblr media
Out of the many songs, is there a reason why the title should have been ‘Like A Movie?’
Since it had been a while, I thought about songs that had our existing color and ones that had a different color and I felt like ‘Like A Movie’ seemed like the best in terms of B1A4’s new direction. Honestly, ‘Like A Movie’ is a dynamically composed song that has a melody line and no rap. Not having a rap is a big change in regard to idol music. Because we can’t help but think about that year, there is a sense of that weight but since we wanted to express B1A4’s unique charm, we made a new attempt. I don’t have any regrets because we gave forth all of our efforts. (Smile)
What is the most memorable compliment you have ever received for your songs?
In my final months of the military, I completed ‘Like A Movie’ and played it for the members. After I had come back, I had asked the president, executives, and successors to take a listen to it. When the song was over, all of them said that it was awesome. The successors may not be very objective (Smile) but I still can’t forget that expression. And I asked for a professional evaluation from the military band and was proud when they said that the rhythm and melody line was good. Even the boss praised me saying that it was really good and I gained strength from that.

What would be the song that became a turning point for Composition Idol CNU?
It would be the fan song ‘A Day of Love’ that I made before I enlisted. It contains the message that I want to convey to the fans without being convoluted. Just like how BANA always think about B1A4, we also expressed our feelings of always thinking about the fans when we’re eating, when the wind blows, and in every moment of our daily lives. It’s a song that was made with honesty.
Out of all of the songs you’ve worked on, what is the song that you like the most?
The song that I’m most fond of always changes but right now it’s one of Sandeul’s solo songs, ‘Oblique Line.’ It’s a song that contains the feelings that I had during various changes. I had written it before joining the military and I had given it to him because when he listened to it, he said he really liked it and wanted it.

With the fourth full length album you decided to do music that was different from the usual music B1A4 released thus far. What kind of songs do you want to do in the future?
I hope that B1A4 is a group that doesn’t become confined to a mold. It’s my goal to make music that is unpredictable and causes future anticipation of “What kind of songs will they release?” I want to try an unlimited amount of various things and even if there is a negative reaction and we get scolded [t/n: scolded from the public], I have a big desire to try just that.
Do you have an artist that you wish to collaborate with?
There is an artist that I really wanted to collaborate with, but we collaborated on our fourth full length album. That would be Bibi who participated in my solo song ‘Zero Gravity.’ When I was in the military, I listened to their music and wanted to work with them so I asked for her to feature in my solo song and thankfully that worked out. When we went to record, I’m very thankful that Tiger JK-sunbae and Biji-sunbae gave all sorts of advice and I fell for both of them. Besides for BiBi, if there’s an opportunity, I’d like to collaborate with my role model, Taeyang-sunbae.

There’s not many Composition Idols in today’s idols. Is there someone’s songs that you want to compliment?
It would be ONF’s MK. When MK makes a song, he works really hard on it. Before, when ONF received a vacation, MK didn’t go and rest, but he stayed at the company to work. When I saw that, I felt his passion.
Please express your determination for future activities as a singer and composer
When I first said that I wanted to become a singer it was because I was simply thought that singing and dancing on stage was fascinating and cool therefore I set my mind on only becoming that. However, if you now ask me about what energizes me to make music, the answer would be BANA. Because the fans are there, I’m motivated and receive strength when I’m working or try to make music. I’m very thankful for that. I also try to be careful as I think that the activities that we do can have an affect on many people. I will work harder with the sense of duty that even with music, it’s not just to let the public know but also so that it can be recorded on one page of K-Pop.
