My Experience
Submitted by user: nobodymeetsworld
Hello The Vegan Council! my name is Samantha. I stumbled upon this when and thought it was a great idea that I could get in touch with some other vegans out there… I just turned vegan five months ago and its been more difficult than I thought it would. i don’t mean difficult in the sense of the transition but more so due to family.  My parents are both immigrants and don’t understand what veganism is….and because of the language barrier..it makes it way more challenging to really explain to them why i turned vegan. they keep telling me that we need to eat meat. but i always tell them that the industry is cruel to animals and i dont want to support that. soo they just tell me to eat atleast chicken and one type of meat. (in order to get my protein) before i made the full transition to veganism I did do that. (this was so that they stopped nagging me bout lacking protein etc).. it made me so angry and i frequently got into arguments and for some point we stopped talking because everytime we talked about me wanting to be fully vegan and take away the chicken..but all we did was argue about food. who thought dietary choice could be such a touchy subject? not me…. so before i made the full transition i was thinking about what i could do so that this would not be such a problem. The reason i think that my parents were so angry about not incorporating chicken or whatever was because of the cultural food that is so important in our culture.. so i thought maybe if i looked for recipes that could be veganized that were in my culture i could convince them that I could still eat in a way that they will approve.. and to obviously stop arguing. after showing them these videos and even making them the food they have been more open minded and i have finally made the full transition to veganism.. with less arguing :) my parents are now being way more open minded about being vegan and i think that i positively showed them the variety of foods that i can make (also a diff way to get my protein from incorporating tofu, etc). instead of just that stereotype of eating “plants”…where my parents believe that you cannot gain and protein from! :/ So I obviously was able to change their mind slightly from just doing my own recipe research and i guess not trying to make it a negative experience. i mean I was angry. but I wanted them to understand it in a way they would only approve of…sadly it was not through reasons of factory farms but i guess thats what many of us need to consider when being vegan. is that everyone is different and need to be convinced or be more accepting in a way they will listen to.. and in this case it was how to incorporate vegan food with food from my culture.
Sorry for the long post…hopefully my story can resonate with many other vegans who have immigrant parents and can relate to my challenges and can somehow help their parents understand veganism in the way I did it.

Dismantling white veganism begins with the refutal of the “we care/we don’t care” binary. This anthology is comprised of essays written by a variety of vegan feminists of colour discussing dominative master/oppressor ideology, decolonizing the non-white body through personal health choices, racialized and gendered identity, and much more.

There are some diets out there, like the Atkins Diet or the Paleo Diet, that have propounded that the our hunter & gatherer ancestors had mainly survived eating meat and therefore this is the food our bodies have been evolved to eat. This video provides the scientific studies that have lead to this erroneous conclusion and then goes on to present more accurate and well-rounded studies that show human beings’ diets have been very varied and diverse, and grains, legumes, and vegetables have made up a large portion of our diets since our earliest existence; our ancestors were more like gatherers & hunters rather than hunters & gatherers! Check it out.

Submit your stories!
Hello friends!
An important aspect about veganism, we think, is to build a community where we can support one another and learn from each other. One of the major reasons as to why veganism has become more visible in society is through social media where people from around the world have the opportunity to spread awareness and share information. Therefore, stories are incredibly educational, valuable and can be inspiring.
For these reasons, we would like to invite everyone to submit a story about your own experiences with the vegan lifestyle or aspects of the movement itself. To do so, go on our page and click on the link “Share With Us” located at the top of the page. Make sure to use our “stories” tag. NOTE: If you would like to remain anonymous, fear not, simply put it as a note in your submission and we will respect your privacy.
Happy writing! We look forward to reading your stories and sharing them with the rest of the community!

My Story
Submitted by user: sue-ella-vee
hey y'all so i guess i thought that i would share my reason for becoming a vegetarian. For me it was for more ethical reasons. Even before researching the animal industry and the cruelty that animals constantly faced. I first looked at what alternative options are out there. To my surprise there was a lot. I started to look at simple easy recipes that I could actually create and incorporate in my daily life. Then when I starting researching the animal industry, the thing I have seen are horrific. For example when looking at the egg industry it is disgusting how chickens are forced to lay hundreds of eggs per year when they are actually supposed to lay only ten to 15! Not to mention that right from birth baby chicks are sorted based on their sex and if they are born as males they are deemed useless to the industry and disposed of as if their life does not matter. While I am a vegetarian I constantly think about being vegan, mostly because even though as a vegetarian who does do not eat meat or egg (because growing up I was raised to believe that it was a type of meat), in a small but significant way I am supporting animal industry through the milk industry. It is interesting to me how growing up I was raised to not eat meat on Fridays which included eggs (even though most people would argue is not a type of meat), but I was not taught the same thing when it came to milk because they both come from the products of other animals. While the Vegan lifestyle is appealing to me I think for me personally it would hard to commit to personally because between work and school i do not really have much time cook dinner for myself, usually my dad prepares dinner and it was difficult convince to him to make more veggie options for me. But I did convince my brother to get my dad to get almond milk.. i mean i guess I’m taking the first step in the right direction (or something like that).
