Restructuring the same sentence to be more interesting
Original Sentence:  Melody nods and together they somberly depart, while Gustavo watches them exit with poorly hidden worry.  Example 1: A nod assures acceptance to the proposal, and subsequently Rachel wordlessly escorts Melody towards a more solitary space, as the spectatorship of Gustavo trails them.  Changes that were made: - The sentence is opened with a verb rather than a noun, drawing the reader's focus toward what is happening rather than who - Additional descriptor words provide more context to the meaning of the exchange, and simple words are replaced with more detailed language. Spectatorship replaces Watches, the word Trails describes the way that they are watched as being close and attentive as if with intrigue. - The use of both active and passive voice engages the reader to utilize context to determine who is doing what, and draws interest when names are mentioned. It also breaks up the monotony of overusing the same nouns and pronouns in the surrounding texts to avoid repetitiveness Example 2: Gustavo studies the resulting unspoken exchange, as Melody and Rachel communicate mutual intentions, and pair off towards the suggested realm for greater privacy. Changes that were made: - The simultaneous events being described are rearranged to allow the reader to experience them from Gustavo's perspective, alluding to the sense of uncertainty and nervousness he feels about what Melody urgently wants to talk about before pulling focus onto the more notable actions being taken in the scene - Verbs are swapped for more metaphorical terms, such as "unspoken exchange" and "communicate mutual intentions," to describe the meaning of the body language used rather than the physical movements themselves. It allows the reader to subtly assume what kind of expressions and gestures were performed to express their thoughts to each other.

Updates On Volition
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 1 is finally complete at 11,000 words! When I started writing Volition again, I had no idea I'd wind up writing this much and sticking to it for this long as I've always had writer's block kick my butt in the past! This is super exciting for me! If you'd like to check out the first chapter, please do! Individual segments and scenes have been posted, but there is also a dedicated tab on my main blog page where you can read chapter 1 in its entirety! Now we can begin chapter 2!

Reading to keep my brain fresh and keen! I've started re-reading classic literature to improve my prose and help the words flow more easily. It's shockingly easy to develop a habit of skimming long paragraphs and losing focus when it comes to long-form written form creative works. It truly is a use-it-or-lose-it type of skill. Currently I've picked up Little Women, and I'm also planning on revisiting Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, and Brave New World if I can! I will update as I progress!

Updates On Volition
Due to my personal struggles with ADHD I ended up making myself a personal thesaurus of words I use most frequently. Sure I could search them up on an online thesaurus, but I've found it didn't exactly give me the answers I was looking for when it comes to descriptive vocabulary so I made my own!
Tumblr media
Every day I try my best to get the ideas flowing, sometimes it feels like my brain is mush, but I remind myself that language is a skill that can be strengthened and trained with effort and that it's okay to write total drivel and edit it later rather than simply create nothing at all.
Tumblr media
Ultimately the most useful thing that has helped me thus far is break big overwhelming ideas into smaller and smaller parts to make them easier to accomplish. It started as "just write out general bullet points of the plot as a whole so you know what events lead to what" then it turned into "Just finish your first chapter" and then it turned into "just finish this one scene in this chapter!" and some days it is "just write the next sentence." Organization helps me regain a sense of clarity and control over the process and it has helped so much pushing through executive dysfunction. So if you're reading, know that I am making an effort every day to give you a compelling story and not giving up when it gets tiring or hard!

Thank you and keep reading!
