With the help of her father, she became heavily interested and influenced by the arts, reading books like "Cry the Beloved Country" by Alan Paton and "LA Rue Cases Nègres" by Josef Zobel which will be the inspiration for her first film in which she directed at 17 in 1974. Alvin Ailey (January 5th, 1931 - December 1st, 1989) Alvin Ailey Jr. was born on January 5th, 1931 in Rogers, Texas. At the age of 6, him and his mother moved to the small town of Navasota where he first experienced segregation and felt inspired by the black spaces, specifically the black church and theater. It wasn't until 1942 when him and his mother moved to Los Angeles where he started to fall in love with dancing. He attended Lester Horton's dance school. With a lot of back and forth between both Universities and the dance school after graduating high school, his final decision was to continue dancing and in doing so, moved to New York City in 1953 with Lester Horton and took over after Horton passed away that same year. From then on he achieved many successes on Broadway and in theater, including owning his very own company, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1959 starting out with 8 black dancers, still standing to this day.

Cindy Blackman Santana Cindy Blackman Santana was born on November 18th, 1959 in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Born in a family heavily influenced by music, it didn't take long for her to fall in love. The instrument she fell in love with? The Drums. At a young age all she could think of when she heard music was the drums. She started taking it more seriously by playing in the school band. Later on she would attend Berklee College of Music and work with Drummers Lenny Nelson & Alan Dawson. By '82 she moved to New York and a few years later her career would take off, starting with collaborations with the likes of The Drifters and Lenny Kravitz and being recognized as a great band leader & great drummer.
