Missed opportunity

While we're searching and scratching for some quality script writing in this garbage wannabe prestiguius show, one thing they couldn't really flesh out well is the sin of kinslaying.

Kinslaying, in the books, it's the most atrocious sin in the 7 kingdoms.

It plays an important role in the plots of Stannis, Tyrion and will definitely do so in the arc of -you know which ones- characters. But in HOTD? Nobody cares.

The super religious Alicent does not mention at any time, not even when confronting Aemond, that he is cursed and condemned in the eyes of men and gods. We do not see the Court nor hear the common people talk about Aemond's sin. therefore, we also don't have Aemond (in the show, they made Lucerys' murder an accident) facing all this scrutiny because of his impulsive actions. He killed his nephew, and he didn't want to do it. No, but we have Aemond burning cities without a scene that positioned him to make that decision. Aemond locking up the people of King's Landing for some reason. Aemond basically being an anime villain.

It would have been great character work if Aemond, faced with the idea that he is already doomed and his name smeared, went down the bloody path of war. He is already doom, so another atrocitie won't change anything.

They don't mention it with Daemon either, although it's clear that Daemon never thinks "Hey, I killed my brother's innocent grandson." The only character who receives the title is Rhaenyra, and she doesn't deserve it...yet.

If they were going to spend a season on how Alicent and Rhaenyra were reluctant to go to war, they could have brought in the fact that a war between kin is hateful to the gods. But only Rhaenys mentions it before she dies. The two sides simply don't feel like two fractions of the same family and that is a missed opportunity.

okay big question for you (no pressure, I’d just love to hear your thoughts) - what do you think could have prevented the dance of the dragons? is there a marital alliance you think could’ve prevented it or some other political move to prevent the conflict?

Prevented? In the pre-dance scenario, nothing really. The two factions would never NOT collide. They both have dragons and two ambitious houses as allies (Velaryon and Hightower) backing their interest about each claimant in the throne. The idea that Rhaenyra wouldn't need to deal with her siblings have they bent the knee is naivette. As Daenerys said to Jon, "it doesn't matter what you want". It doesn't matter what Aegon wants, as we have seen, he would always be a threat, crowned or not. His mere existence would always be a banner for those who are dissatisfied with Rhaenyra's reign. If not him, Aemond or Daeron. They would certainly be the Westeros version of some Princes of Tower if it weren't for the fact that, well, they have dragons.

Another thing that the show failed to point is that...Rhaenyra herself wouldn't need to do much. We have seen it with Blood and Cheese. Daemon acts on his own accords. He would deal with whatever rebellion before she gets to do anything. And deep down, she know this. She married him because she hoped he would stenght her claim.

Marriage alliances?

Aegon with Rhaenyra and Jace with Helaena were good enough. The Strong boys being well, Strong, means she has to keep the Jace and Baela thing and the Luke or Joffrey with Rhaena, otherwise she may lose Corlys and Rhaenys. Maybe Aemond and Baela (Yes, Damon would rather feed her to Caraxes but c'mon, that's VHAGAR'S RIDER). Aegon would need to marry some lord's daughter alling with Rhaenyra and just ambitious enough to push his son in law claim to get, let's say, a Small's Council seat but not actual rebellion.

A political move? Plenty of them. Viserys just fake dementia when everyone could see the weather.

Punish Lucerys for the Aemond's eye. Not take his eye of course, he is a kid, but make him face consequences. Disinherit him, send him to the Citadel, or the Faith. Rhaenyra can either chose to have one of her children in a lose position or the rider of the biggest dragon alive growing resentful at her family.

Kick Otto out of King's landing again. Or bring Rhaenyra's ass back. She can endure some rumours if it means to defend her claim.

In the books Alicent was never Viserys's regent. Making her the regent makes little sense if he is weak and each moon closer to the Stranger. Make Rhaenyra your regent, or someone allied to her if you really want her to succeed you. Make her work alongside Otto. If Otto sees in her someone he can work with then there's no need to crown his inmature grandson. Of course, Daemon and Alicent in this scenario are very unlikely to let anything move forward.

Aside from the dynastic fight...what are really the political differences between factions? What are their differences on taxes, law, trade and war? What are their views on the small folks? Essos? Dorne? The faith?

The war is all about who sits on the Throne but while they are sitting at it they are fighting but how different are they really?

Looking back at it, when Rhaenyra was defending herself from Jaehaerys's murder saying she would never, Rhaenys should have at least give her the side eye because uhum Girl you kinda did??? Remember Laenor???

I can't believe we wasted an entire season on Alicent and Rhaenyra trying to accept that war was inevitable. The shame. The boredom.

The prophecy is read by Rhaegar in an archive and is told to Jaehaerys II by a witch. That's why Jaehaerys II married Rhaegar and Daenery's parents. That's likely the reason why Rhaegar decided to...fuck the kingdoms and his dinasty look for a third head of the dragon.

But there are no implications that it was known by previous generations of Targaryens, and going from king to heir makes no sense since jaehaerys I was not his father's heir. It could have been lost, but...make it the main reason why rhaenyra fights for the Throne? No, that's nonsense, a messias trope bs.

Can she just want the Throne because is power as much as she can have as a woman? Naaahh she has to be the Savior!!

Was the ASOIAF prophecy mentioned this much in Fire and Blood? I don’t get the obsession with them bringing it up when the show failed it so bad

The prophecy was never mentioned in the book, to its benefit. It's entirely a show invention. In Fire and Blood, people are allowed to want the throne for their own sake. They think it belongs to them so they try to take it. There is no good side fighting for the objectively greater good or to support the Grand Design. Both sides think they're right and fight for the throne for their own reasons. And it's an infinitely more compelling story because of this.
