Moon 1 - Strange Encounter
As the waves lapped at the shore, two cats made their way down the beach, sand crunching softly under-paw. Thrushstar was silent, her eyes focused and mouth ajar, taking in the scents around them. She took border patrols seriously; the clan was still rather small, they couldnât risk others coming and stealing their territory. Elderwhisker was behind her, his own silence like a thunder cloud above the leader.
She still felt awkward around him, despite having chosen him as her deputy. He was older and more experienced, and she couldnât help but feel slightly jealous. He would have made a better leader. Her blue eyes cut to him, his white and brown fur a stark difference against her ruddy brown. He seemed lost in his own world, eyes drifting across the sea to their left.
âThrushstar,â his voice, soft and quiet, broke her trance and she startled, fur puffing as embarrassment took ahold of her. Had she been caught staring? She, albeit a bit hesitant, dared another glance in his direction..
But he wasnât looking at her, his eyes staring ahead, locked onto the dry brush before them. Her eyes narrowed, âwhat is it, Elderwhisker?â What was he looking at? She waited for a response, but without sharing even a word with her, the tom crouched low to the ground, so low his belly fur brushed the sandy ground. He ignored her incredulous look. âElderwhisker!â She hissed, voice a whisper.
The deputy continued forward, leaving Thrushstar to stand dumbly, rooted to her spot as his white tail disappeared into the yellow thicket before her. She didnât follow, too stunned to speak, to think. She gritted her teeth against the sudden doubt that fogged her mind. If her own deputy didnât listen to her, who says her clanmates would? Anger bubbled within her, swelling in her throat in an attempt to choke her but she ignored it, swallowing it back down. She couldnât let her emotions control her; that isnât what a leader would do. Use your powers wisely...
Just as she was about to pad forward, Elderwhisker tumbled through the foliage, the rustling loud in Thrushstarâs ears. She flinched back, eyes widening. What? Elderwhisker let out a snarl before throwing himself back into the undergrowth. This time, Thrushstar bolted after him, the familiar roar of battle in the back of her mind.Â
She closed her eyes in discomfort as the thorny tendrils caught onto her thick coat of fur, struggling to pull herself through. She grunted, eventually falling onto the other side, landing on her chin. Watery sand splattered across her face, blinding her for a moment before she was sent reeling back as a weight dropped on top of her.
An unfamiliar and choking scent sent her driving forward, rearing back onto her hind legs, hissing. The weight dropped after a few moments of struggling and she whipped around to see a scrawny ginger cat. They cowered at the sight of her, her large, imposing frame looming over him. âGet out of here. RatClan doesnât welcome prey stealers.â She gnashed her fangs at him, barely missing his ear. Without a sound, the rogue went sprinting the way he came and Thrushstar deflated, exhaustion suddenly weighing her down.
She then turned as a sigh came from behind her, fangs suddenly bared again. âWhy didnât you listen to me?â She growled, piercing glare set on Elderwhisker. The tom had the audacity to look affronted, his green eyes wide with confusion.
His maw opened, but no sound came out. He closed his mouth, realization seeming to dawn on him. He shook his head, looking away. He still managed to get her pity with how guilty he truly seemed. âIâm sorry, Thrushstar.. I just smelled them andââÂ
âWe need communication, Elderwhisker. I had no idea there was a rogue⌠I mean, I could hardly smell them.â She admitted, ashamed. She should have smelled him, but she didnât. Even now, the rogueâs scent was faded, like a lost memory. âYou canât just run off like that, and ignore me.â
Looking properly scolded, Elderwhisker nodded, glancing warily to the side. Now that she was really looking at him, she couldnât hold back a scoff of amusement, eyes glittering. âYou look like mouse-dung.â And he did.Â
His coat was tousled, fur sticking up in every which way. He looked like a hedgehog! Elderwhisker huffed out a breath of laughter, the tension now giving way to a sort of fondness. âYeah, yeah. Tease me all you want⌠While you do that, Iâll be the first to the fresh-kill pile!â
With a sudden burst of speed, the deputy went careening foward, in the direction of camp. Thrushstar, baffled at this newly found energy, dashed after him, her own laughter making its way into the air. âWeâll see about that!âÂ
