Unreliable narrators are one hell of an idea. You can just write whatever, and if a reader points out "hey the way this scene happened should not be physically possible if it's done the way this character described it", you can just be like "yeah I don't trust that fucker either."

Just noticed that he hugs Jinx even tighter for a second before lifting her up — like he’s on the verge of tears. It’s only when he notices Vi watching that he reins it back in.

We know he’s freaking out. He carries her sprinting halfway across the Lanes. But in front of Vi, maybe he consciously doesn’t allow it or he involuntarily disassociates until he feels safe to express it again.

Headcannon:

I think that a lot of his “facade,” is less about looking intimidating and more about his nervous system kicking in so he can cope with all of it. His flattened affect, half-lidded eyes, and (maybe?) examples of disassociation are hallmarks of complex PTSD.

Maybe it’s not all just aesthetic, you know?

Maybe it’s a high functioning trauma response of a man who’s constantly managing anxiety by numbing the pain. But dressed in sexy charisma.

His instinct is to protect Jinx, but his nervous system needs him to appear composed and numb, especially in front of someone who makes him feel extremely vulnerable (vi). He’s a survivor, after all.

He isn’t just putting on a show, he’s constantly regulating. We’re seeing a man who’s been holding back a flood for years.

Time to talk about Jinx's monsters...

Mylo is the scariest, even without the scribbles, and Jinx is terrified of him.

She's much less frightened of Claggor, and remembers him closer to what he really was. His scribble has what looks like stitching over his mouth, like his doll does. Maybe because he was so quiet.

Is that younger Vander? Closer to the Vander that found the girls on the bridge? He alternates between that and shimmer-monster Vander. I find the screaming scribble that younger, stoic Vander gets especially haunting.

Silco is framed as one of Jinx's monsters. He's angular and toothy, snarling like the red monster that's enclosing Jinx in its jaws.

And that's the great irony of this scene. Because, yeah Silco *is* a monster in a sense, but not in this scene. Here he's trying to save Jinx from her monsters. He sees the pain Jinx is in.

Vi thinks she's trying to save Powder, but she's retraumatizing her. She's making her monsters, just like she did when they were kids. And this time she's not the one who chases them away.

my brain: sevika is one of the most impressive characters to exist in all of fiction. from her character design to how her choices are used to depict her strongest quality as a character. she showcased arguably the strongest emotional restraint out of all the characters. i cannot get over how well sevika is written to be confident and not proud. her "no beating around the bush" attitude serves for great dialouge that is so engaging. she has the capability to be vulnerable and heartfelt around someone she respects, which is something writer's struggle to make feel genuine and natural. she is imposing on screen but there is also a weight of tiredness to her. all this and more within 15 minutes of screentime.
