Things like this happen when there is a lack of diversity in top management teams of organizations. A lack of diversity in organizational members creates a dominant cultural group such that ads claiming whiteness as pure implies blackness is impure--echoing the imperialist ideology of the savage Other in Said's Orientalism--slip into marketing because homogeneous groups develop a form of cultural communication specific to their group. Three years ago, I was honored to present at @upwardbound Career Exploration Day. Students had their choice of panels containing experts on professions they most desired. After a wonderful day of questions and advice, I was stopped in the bathroom by a student. She was too shy to raise her hand and ask me a question in front of her classmates, she said. She asked me for advice on beginning her career. I gave her some tips on securing internships, told her how a 'no' from one company only means a 'yes' from another company, and explained how even the best in the business had been turned down (at least a few times.) Her spirit lifted. Then, she asked the words I'll never forget. "Ms. Christina, is there any way we can stay in touch? If you wouldn't mind... and you have the time, I mean... if... " All of a sudden, she seemed embarrassed and got quiet, fidgeting with her hands. She seemed to think I was more important or too busy for her. Nothing could be further from the truth. "Oh, yes! Please! Please stay in touch. Here!" I shoved my business card at her. "Please, email me anytime you want. My business number is on there, too. If you need guidance or any help at all, don't hesitate to reach out. I wish I had someone to help me when I was your age. I sound crazy, but hopefully when you're my age you'll pay it forward, too. So, anything you need from me--just ask! It's not a problem at all. I'm so flattered you asked me for help. Thank you!" I am proud to announce Miss D completed an internship in childhood education last summer, currently works in childhood healthcare, and she just asked me for a recommendation letter for a management position. It always amazes me how kindness works in this world. It's in my nature to ask people at their jobs how they're doing, how long until their shift is over, and to encourage them to finish the day strong. I especially take time to do this with people working on their feet, standing all day long. I remind them to drink water, ask if they've had a snack, and remind them to get self-care when they leave work. Oftentimes, I'm rewarded with a free gift or upgrade for which I never asked and I'm always left surprised. . . I don't ask about you and your day because I want something. I ask about your day because I was once working on my feet, standing all day, dealing with difficult customers, hoping I would come across someone who would inject me with motivation and positivity. These days, I hold up the line behind me everywhere I go. I want to know if the person doing their job helping me needs me to help them and what I can do to make their day better. . .
