They don't mind you givin' the latest rap
They don't mind your being hoes
They don't mind your being bitches
They don't mind you being whatever image that Viacom and BET can come up with
But what they don't want you to know..
Is that you're the ones that can redefine civilization if you take time to do it
`Dr Amos Wilson
"A realistic and objective analysis of the social structure and dynamics of American society, particularly those pertaining to White-Black race relations, will vividly reveal that Blacks are "DOUBLY SOCIALIZED",i.e., first by the environing and dominant White culture and secondly, reactively and proactively by partly indigenous Black culture. Consequently, Black culture and each of its members are introjected with and afflicted by the "DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS" so famously defined by W.E.B Dubois. Hence, with little modification Dager's definition applies equally to individuals and the subordinate Black culture. "Socialization, broadly defined, is the process by which the infant (or subordinate culture) learns the ways a given social group (the dominant culture) and is molded into an effective participant." Dager adds: Because of imperfections in this process, the infant (subordinate culture) is not completely "molded", but in the course of his (its) developement he (it) acquires behavior, attitudes, values and other personality (cultural) traits that are at once unique to him (it) and at the same time characteristic of the group or groups (dominant culture) that serve as the socializing agent".-Amos N. Wilson.
"Dager contends that the socialization process is facilitated by the process called IDENTIFICATION. He defines IDENTIFICATION as the "process by whicch the INFANT (and in the present context of discussion, the SUBORDINATE BLACK CULTURE) becomes or behaves like some other or others and/or like others expect(the final three words in this statement are particularly apropos to oppressed Blacks). It involves psychological processes and includes motives, both conscious and unconscious....During and following (the identification) process, the ADULT(DOMINANT CULTURE) normally in control of the RESOURCES dispenses them according to the desirability of the behavior performed by the INFANT( SUBORDINATE CULTURE). The INFANT (SUBORDINATE CULTURE) will identify(i.e., behave the way he is expected to behave, or to attempt to IMITATE usually in a considerably carcatured manner the attitudes and behavior of his ROLE MODEL). with the ADULT (DOMINANT CULTURE) because he (it) is DEPENDENT on him(the DOMINANT CULTURE);in order to receive certain REWARDS and avoid punishments of various kinds the INFANT (SUBORDINATE CULTURE) will be motivated to CONFORM to expected behavior (or barring this, engage in various forms of deviant behavior in order to attain equivalent ends)." emphasis added by Wilson.
"In the context of White American supremacy, Afrikan Americans must ask ourselves: WHAT IS THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF OPPRESSED BLACK CULTURE AND THE VARIOUS PERSONAL AND SOCIAL IDENTITIES IT PRODUCES? We must no longer through the abuse of reality, denial and distortion fail to recognize that our basic identities as an oppressed people are largely socially MANUFACTURED by the White-dominated Americans culture and its related social practices in which we as a people are imersed. These identities are therefore incarnations and instruments of SOCIAL POWER; and therefore incarnations and instruments of their social power; and are socially designed and conditioned when activated, to unwittingly serve the political-economic interests of dominant White America to the dtriment of subordinate Black culture. Afrikan American cultural identity and behavioral orientations are currently defined, are functionally defined to perpetuate self-negating, self-defeating, and under certain circumstances, self-destructive behavior in Black Americans.....The salvation, empowerment and liberation of Afrikan peoples require an appropriate, thorough, pragmatic cultural analysis of deculturation and reculturation of ourselves by dominant European peoples, of reactionary "Black Culture," and their social products as represented by reactionary Black identities, whether considered prosocial or antisocial, function to maintain the oppressive power of Whites and the subordinate powerlessness of Blacks. Our salvation further requires that we perceive White supremacy as the major social, economic, and spiritual problem to be resolved by Afrikan peoples, and that we ask and answer definitively the questions: WHAT KIND OF CULTURE MUST WE CONSTRUCT IN ORDER TO OVERTHROW WHITE SUPREMACY? WHAT KINDS OF SOCIAL IDENTITIES, RELATIONS, ARRANGEMENTS, ALIGNMENTS, INSTITUTIONS, VALUES, ETC., WHICH WHEN ACTUALIZED, WILL ALLOW US TO ATTAIN AND PROTECT OUR LIBERTY?; ENHANCE OUR QUALITY OF LIFE.
