When we get caught up in the minutiae, the details that make us all different, there’s two ways of seeing that. You can see the texture of that person, the qualities that make them unique, or you can go to war about it, say, ‘That person is different from me, I don’t like you, so let’s battle.’ My mother is an ordained minister, I’m a Muslim. She didn’t do backflips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 years ago. But I tell you now, we put things to the side, I’m able to see her, she’s able to see me, we love each other, the love has grown. That stuff is minutiae. It’s not that important.

Here we have Barack Obama managing to play nice and talk to the Trumps and engaging Meliana. But Michelle Obama is like, "No way. No how.  I'm not having a fancy hairdo. I'm not wearing a fancy coat; I'm wearing mourning.  And I'm NOT engaging with these bastards."  Melania has this delicate "I'm so feminine" stance; Michelle looks like she is about to kick some ass.  Melania has on tiny delicate stilettos; Michelle has on black boots with chunky serious (but low) heels. Melania has her hands at her sides in pretty leather gloves to match her outfit; Michelle is clenching her ungloved hands together, as if she's ready to punch someone, should they get out of line.  Melania is attentively looking at the men; Michelle is gazing off into the distance, thinking more important thoughts. Fuck yes Michelle! She is a master at self-presentation; this is clearly a thought out and deliberate response to the visuals of the day, and I think it's brilliant.

“I’ve had my head tilted up to the stars for as long as I can remember. You know what surprised me the most? It wasn’t meeting them. It was meeting you.” — Arrival (2016)
