discussing the jupiter keyes, shan isabell & alice glass situation: theories, misinformation, facts, fakes. discussing the past, present and future.
⚠︎ this post contains mentions of SA, abuse, ED, and more.
note. this article is intended solely for journalistic discussion. the article does not encourage harassment of any mentioned individual, and all readers are urged to fact-check claims and form their own conclusions. this article was written objectively, away from personal bias, with evidence provided to prove what has been said in the article. any person that was mentioned in the article and wishes for the article to be unpublished can contact us through tumblr.
on june 14th, 2024, shan isabell, a 27-year-old woman from australia, released a statement (click highlighted text to open link) on imgur talking about her experience with the 47-year-old producer jupiter w. keyes a/k/a jupiter io (formerly of HEALTH). in the statement, she accused keyes of sexual and emotional abuse, love bombing, coercing her into using a baby voice as part of his infantilization kink, drugging her with both illegal substances and prescription medication intended for his ex-wife, controlling her, and contributing to her relapse (shan was struggling with an eating disorder). the list goes on.
the allegations also caused the crystal castles-related allegations (click highlighted text to open link) to resurge, since alice glass (real name: margaret d. osborn) is the previously mentioned ex-wife of jupiter's. many are thinking that jupiter keyes was the one who wrote the allegations, or that alice glass actually didn't write the allegations about ethan, her crystal castles ex-bandmate, but about jupiter, since a lot said about jupiter in shan's statement resembles what's been said about ethan in alice's statement.
in this post, on the anniversary of the allegations being posted, i would like to discuss some theories, misinformation and facts about the allegations. i'll just give ten examples, however if you have any more, please share them in the comments.
true - [T] / possibly true [PosT] false - [F] / possibly false [PF] theory - [TH] misinformation - [MIS] unverifiable - [UVF]
1: "jupiter forced both shan and alice to use a baby voice" → a) [PosT]; b) [PosT, but TH]
a) as said in shan's statement, keyes coaxed shan into speaking in a baby voice. she even recalls having a phone call with keyes, during which her friend advised her to get off the call, because her voice was "disturbing".
and when it comes to alice, there is clearly a difference between her voice during the crystal castles era and the post-crystal castles era. here is a comparison. don't mind the background noise, as the background music was removed using vocalremover ai.
b) also some fans have noticed that in the 2021 dorian electra instagram live stream, you can notice that at the beginning of the live stream, alice is speaking in her natural voice (c. 0:19), but as she turns around (this is when you can also see a person behind her, believed to be keyes), she changes her voice to the baby voice.
2: "jupiter was worried about alice 'ethaning' (cancelling?) him" → [T]
the following audio is self-explanatory.
3: "jupiter is an pedophile / ephebophile" → [UVF]
while shan's statement provides us with the information that jupiter forced her to use a baby voice, often called her 'little one', and infantilized her, there is no clear evidence that jupiter is a pedophile / ephebophile, such as legal documents or statements of underage victims. however, the fact that jupiter reached out to shan when he thought she was 14 - 16 years old is more than disturbing.
4: "alice glass has never publically supported jupiter keyes" → [F]
the following comment under keyes' response to the allegations states the contrary.
5: "shan has confirmed that nothing wrong has ever happened with jupiter" → [F + MIS]
in his response post, jupiter attached a screenshot of shan saying that they're in love, that they get along and that there wasn't anything wrong. however...
shan later added that jupiter forced her to send him the pre-written messages written by himself as mitigating evidence in case she would cancel him. according to shan's statement, jupiter knew that she was on cocaine at the time, and said that it was giving her dopamine to "think clearly".
6: "alice's sister said that alice overexaggerated the crystal castles allegations" → [T]
paige osborn, alice's sister has stated during a conversation with a user known as vivian.cancer that alice was never abused but only manipulated, and that "the reality was there was controlling, manipulative behaviour by ethan (claude) that could be perceived as emotional abuse, but that would be the extent of it. there was never physical or verbal abuse. the narrative that jupiter and her want to tell is mostly lies with one or two highly exaggerated truths." paige has since retracted her statement under jupiter's response post to the allegations:
7: "alice glass is being gutted, she does not receive a lot from crystal castles' profit." → [F]
the following screenshot is self-explanatory.
8: "paige was forced to write that comment (ref: 6.) under the threat that her contact with alice will be restricted by jupiter" → [TH]
while the change of mind is quite baffling and suspicious, there is no clear evidence that paige was blackmailed or threatened by jupiter.
9: "jupiter is regularly harassing edith frances" → [T / PosT]
jupiter keyes often posts instagram stories related to food, music production and... guns. no, not like gym kind of guns, actual guns. why guns, then? edith frances, the vocalist of crystal castles, edith frances, has a trauma which was caused by... you guessed it, guns. by posting this content, jupiter makes threats against her, and possibly causes traumatic flashbacks. alice and jupiter seem to hate edith frances. during alice's live show in belfast, alice reacted badly to a fan cheering her name, thinking it was a person heckling her. quote: "get a fucking job bitch. i would never pay 10 quid (...) to shout at me, for a fucking pedophile." in a tiktok video, you can even hear a person saying "oh, wow", with evident disappointment in their voice. not so long after this, she started to shout what you can hear in this audio recording:
10. "alice glass is not innocent herself. she texted inappropriately with minors." → [F]
in april of 2024, a post was made on twitter, saying that alice glass had texted inappropriately with a minor. you can find screenshots regarding this situation on lolcow.farm. however, these allegations were proven to be false by the same person that made the allegations. the screenshots were photoshopped, and the whole story was made up. for privacy and safety reasons, the person's username and avatar was censored.
we advise you to do your research about these situations. you can find more information on the prey_was_predator instagram, the @untitled-profile and @boysgotojupitertogetmorestupider tumblrs, and the alice_glass_archives tiktok account. misinformation is a huge problem on the internet currently, so check if what you've seen is actually true.
peace.

an interview with villaz — a talk about synesthesia, euphoria and violin
today's thorns of the future guest is villaz, an electronic & alternative singer and producer from wrocław, poland. many could describe her music as nostalgic and ethereal. villaz's first ever release was "your car", which was later included in the "how it feels to be 19" EP self-released through the polish self-distribution record emuze.me.

thorns of the future: do you prefer making music in polish or english?
villaz: At first I created solely in english. I think the reason was that the language barrier (meaning also the fact that my family did not understand what "attention whore" meant) created some kind of a safe space for me to share my thoughts. Now i grew older, some things changed, and you can get ready for some polish music;)
thorns of the future: what was your first ever live show like?
villaz: My first ever show as villaz was at Transformator in Wrocław, as a guest after a underground fashion show. A few people gathered and my eyes were closed most of the time, because I was so stressed to finally play my own music. After the show, people came to me and I am forever grateful for the support they gave me. One guy even travelled 2 hours to get there!!! I don't think i will ever forget that day, the feeling was unreal:')
thorns of the future: if you could turn back time and change something in your songs, what would you change?
villaz: There is definitely one song that does not resonate with me that much, i have to admit i don't like it. I won't say which one tho hahah I think it's because I did it for others, not for me; it didn't come from my heart. That's the thing I would change and I am changing actively right now - I only put out things I like.

thorns of the future: what is the best thing that's happened to you in your career?
villaz: Singling something would be unfair as so many amazing things had happened along the way. Although I have to say, that I still somehow cannot comprehend the fact that I have actual fans...... !!!!!!!
thorns of the future: how do you pick the covers to your singles & other releases?
villaz: I have synesthesia so it's really easy - the moment I start creating, visuals come to my mind and then I put them together.
thorns of the future: recommend a few artists that you believe should be way more popular.
villaz: MY BEST FRIEND IRYS - SHE DESERVES THE WORLD!!!! other than that I think that some Polish artists deserve international career - just look at Mery Spolsky's "Blond Włosy" ?!?!?! wtf?!?!?!?! this is too good!!!!!!!!!!! one of my fav songs all time for sure!!!

thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
villaz: I chose music as my career:')
thorns of the future: what is "your car" about?
villaz: One of the best period of my life. I felt so free, just.... I don't think words could ever describe it. I miss this feeling a lot. I created a piece of art that's euphoric but also nostalgic - to really bring that feeling back.
thorns of the future: what's your favorite song that you've made?
villaz: ITS NOT RELEASED YET SO GET READY!!!!!!!!!!

thorns of the future: if you could ask your younger self about her favorite song, what would she answer?
villaz: Younger? Like 12 - definitely something by guns n' roses - I was obsessed... But younger - like 16 - ilomilo. and that didn't change i think..
thorns of the future: who inspired you to make music?
villaz: My brain lol. I always kinda knew i'm gonna make music. But I love Finneas productions - i think they are what inspires me nowadays.
thorns of the future: what are your plans for the future?
villaz: I hope it won't sound cliche - but I just want to make music and make people happy with it. I want to play more festivals, shows, whatever, just live music. I love it and I think that is the best part of being a musician.

thorns of the future: if you could learn to play ane instrument, what would it be?
villaz: Probably violin, but I can play some basics!!! I borrowed my friend's violin and although I never played it before - I leamed some stuff in like 2 weeks and now the end of 3am" is not a MIDI -I played the violin myself:) (I have to admit, there was lot of tuning. but lol still PLAYED IT!)
thorns of the future: is there anything you'd like to tell your fans?
villaz: GET READY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i love you the most
we would like to thank villaz for answering all of our questions. we really appreciate you. that’s all for now.

an interview with varya from CROSSPARTY & The Sextapes — a talk about psychedelic rock, thailand and cannabis
today's thorns of the future guest is varya, a vocalist and lyricist of one of the biggest russian witch-house bands, CROSSPARTY, as well as a vocalist and lyricist of The Sextapes, an electronic and indie duo. CROSSPARTY has been in the scene since 2012, and The Sextapes, technically since 2019. CROSSPARTY's first ever release was the "#SWAGHUNTER" LP, which was released through the Phantasma Disques label.

thorns of the future: how and when did you and uken start CROSSPARTY?
varya: At first, I need to tell you this story from the beginning. Uken wasn't the first musician in Crossparty. In 2012 the group was invented by Ilya Bespalov and me. Ilya is an electronic musician from my hometown Vladivostok. Before Crossparty i was singing in a punk-rock band named Cosmic Pirates. We were friends and one time we decided to try to create something together in an experimental electronic style. In 2014 Ilya decided to leave our band for personal reasons and I've asked Uken to join me. The rest is the story.
thorns of the future: what was your craziest experience at a live show?
varya: Every live show is a crazy experience in some way, you know. Sometimes it’s crazy in a good way, sometimes in a bad. I can tell you about my first live show in Moscow on WITCHOUT 2. It was crazy because I was very nervous and was stuck in a toilet 2 minutes before the show because the door locker was broken. Some guy in a waiting line broke the door and when I got out the show had already started and I needed to run to the stage while the first song was playing. Good that it was an instrumental track without a vox, but it was really hard to run through the crowd to be on time at the beginning of the second song and of course I was out of breath.
thorns of the future: tell us about your first ever live show.
varya: My first serious live show was when I was 15 with my punk-rock band Cosmic Pirates. Before them I was in a girl group called Cashew, but we didn’t do live shows. Guys from Cosmic Pirates heard my voice at a Cashew rehearsal and asked me to join them as a lead singer. At the first rehearsal they said to me that we have our first live show in 2 days. We wrote 2 new original songs with my lyrics and the rest of the songs were old. Everything was really good and the guys presented me like a new lead singer to their fans.
thorns of the future: what's your favourite CROSSPARTY song?
varya: Because all of Crossparty's songs it’s very personal and autobiographical, I love them all in different ways. But i can tell my Top-5: Cult, Suffocate, Lost Girls, Twins, Iamwar.

thorns of the future: recommend us some bands/artists that you like.
varya: I love different genres, especially the old kind of music. Psychedelic rock from the 60's, disco from the 70’- 80’s. I can tell that I am a huge fan of The Kills, Lady Gaga, Johny Mitchell, Blondie and Yanka Dyagileva. I think that it’s my Top-5.
thorns of the future: what is "cult" about?
varya: I wrote this song about relationships between me, myself and i. It’s about closing myself from everyone and making love with the darkness and pain inside me. When I wrote it I was 16. At this age I was so lost inside, didn’t trust others, but at the same time I was confident with the things that I was doing. My life was not easy at this time, and I was struggling between love and hate.
thorns of the future: you're also a part of a band called "the sextapes" - can you tell us something about it?
varya: Razorz (EPILEPTICS) and I wanted to create something with “indie rock vibes from 2009” and I think that we did it. I hope that in the future we can make more music. Now we have some problems because we live on different continents and both have a lot of work. But soon we will release some new songs, we are now working on it.
thorns of the future: what is "splinters" about?
varya: Splinters it’s definitely about love, you know like explosions, glitters, butterflies and all that stuff. But at the same time it’s not about teenage love, i think it’s more about when your heart was already broken and you now have only splinters of it, but feel love like it's the first time and ready for your splinters to shine.

thorns of the future: are you planning to release any new songs soon?
varya: Yes. Now I'm working on a couple collaborations, and preparing to start a new project soon. I’m not released anything for a long long time because at this time I'm walking through the immigration process. I've moved to Thailand and do business here with my husband. Starting something new it’s always difficult, especially starting a new life in another country. But now things are getting better and I have the inspiration, time and mental health to start working again on new music.

thorns of the future: any artists or genres that you don't like?
varya: I’m not a fan of Russian rap but I can't tell if it's bad or that I hate it. It’s still art, but kinda weird for me. But what I really hate - Russian propagandist music - is really a piece of shit.
thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
varya: Getting married, I think (just joking). I've done a lot of crazy and risky things in my life, I cannot tell you just one. All my life it has been a crazy journey, and sometimes doing some risky things it’s very nervous and anxious. For now I think that moving to another country where i’ve never been before was risky - but it was the right decision at the same time.
thorns of the future: is there a country you would never like to live in?
varya: I think I couldn't live in a muslim country. I am a punk bisexual independent woman that loves freedom of self expression in each point of my life. Just because of the rules and laws of this, it's not for me. And now i can't live in Russia, because of the war and stupid laws. It’s just not safe and I don't want to just sit and stare at how our government is ruining the future of millions of people in Ukraine and Russia.

thorns of the future: what's your favourite drug or favourite type of alcohol?
varya: I love any type of Alcohol haha. It’s true. I have a high-functioning alcoholism type and I really really love to drink something. I’m not using drugs so much for now, I was addicted to amphetamines 7 years ago for 1,5 years and now i’m careful with it. Our business is in a cannabis industry and I don't even smoke. But if I want to I can get high, I do not prohibit it to myself.
thorns of the future: is there anything you want to say to your fans?
varya: Stay true and love yourself as much as you can do. Peace for you, and thank you for your support!
we would like to thank varya for answering all of our questions. we really appreciate you. that’s all for now.

an interview with witchita — a talk about underground music, anxiety and corruption
today's thorns of the future guest is witchita, once an electronic/witch house artist, now a latin urbano artist from mexico. witchita has been in the scene since 2019, when he released his first ever EP called "untitled" through distrokid. the songs from the EP could be described as energetic, with a dose of experimentality.
[this interview includes strong language and possibly triggering content. viewer discretion is advised.]

thorns of the future: what was the first song you've ever made?
witchita: Witchita from my first EP, named "Untitled" I wanted it to sound like "Baptism" by Crystal Castles, obviously it doesn't resemble that song that much due to lack of expertise at that point, but I do like that the first song I ever produced did ended up in a official release of mine, brings a lot of memories and transports me to that time when I first started learning Ableton, and what's mixing/mastering.
thorns of the future: what are some artists that you really like?
witchita: Crystal Castles, Skrillex, Playboy Carti, Yung Lean, Noisia, Dillom, Snow Strippers, 100 gecs, are like some "big names" I tend to always listen to underground and local projects to know what's really happening in the scenes I'm interested. As a fun fact, the last album I've recently listened is "1" by "estratosfera" from Argentina, I've also recently listened to a band called "Garbage People" they're like "garage rock?" sounded cool too.
thorns of the future: tell us about your craziest live show experience.
witchita: I had a show in Villahermosa, in my home state "Tabasco" in mid 2023, that was one of the first time, playing a couple of new songs, and the response to them from the audience was amazing, I saw everybody connecting and enjoying themselves, at least this was crazy for me, and also hearing the feedback from them at the end was super uplifting, I know this isn't very "crazy" lol but it was for me.
thorns of the future: do you have any new planned releases?
witchita: Yes, there's three songs for upcoming releases, one is called "Olas de un ayer" produced by a friend called Rodrigo, that's a "nostalgic" song about my teenage years. I have another one at the moment called "Por Dentro" produced by Trillfox, that's resembles my anxiety and dumb ways to deal with it. The third one, doesn't have a name yet, but it's a "hoodtrap", that's more on some gansta shit, produced by me, and co produced by razorz.
thorns of the future: tell us about the riskiest or the dumbest thing you've ever done.
witchita: Trusting the wrong people back in 2018 led me to being in a vulnerable situation, caused me to not have any money for basic needs, damaged relationships with friends and family, not having a stable living situation, I had to crash friends couches, all of this while I was student, luckily enough I hustled enough to get out of that situation with call center jobs and side businesses and I'm okay since late 2020, shit was awful. When I released "untitled" in 2019 I thought I was going to die any day.

thorns of the future: if you could resolve one major problem on earth, what would it be?
witchita: War. I'm in awe that we're getting a genocide basically being streamed in front of our eyes, and no one's doing shit to stop it. I'm as dumb as the next guy about these topics, but I think bombing children is just wrong and evil. Although I don't think this will ever be resolved, we will see wars until the sun explodes.
thorns of the future: what's your favourite song that you produced?
witchita: HUMX, my latest single at the moment, it's a very simple beat that combines those Witch House elements with a Jersey and urban percussions. I've gotten feedback from listeners that this one's their favourite song of mine.
thorns of the future: what software do you use to make your music?
witchita: Ableton and I will never leave it, great for producing, great for playing live, my favourite producers use it, but to each it's own, FL Studio, Logic, even if you only have Bandlab, you can make great music, the goal is to have the purpose to create.
thorns of the future: what's the artist you'd love to collaborate with?
witchita: Like, DREAM collab, shit, Skrillex, 100gecs, besides that, I'm really almost open to collaborate with any artist that it's "outside" the box, that might have some cool or fresh sounds going on.
thorns of the future: what's the artist you'd never like to collaborate with?
witchita: I wouldn't like to collaborate with artists that don't want try to make things a bit differently or that their shit doesn't sound authentic, type beat type of crowd, that make songs like is a recipe, like making 2001's pop punk exactly as it sounded in effing 2001.

thorns of the future: how did you come up with the name for your project?
witchita: The project used to be under the name "Cry Horror" but I started to feel less identified overtime with that name, razorz (aka EPILEPTICS) suggested me to use the name of my first track for the new project name when I started really getting into more urban and hyperpop influence, he also pushed me to really dive in, into producing these type of genres more.
thorns of the future: what is your song "V" about?
witchita: V is a song about how we're all corrupted, it's in our nature, that you shouldn't trust your governments and police.
thorns of the future: tell us about your hobbies.
witchita: I'm always listening to music, or try to educate myself more about the craft, I don't consider it a hobby, but a passion though. I really enjoy watching films, I wish I could draw better, since I believe is a great way to express youself artistically, I really like cooking as well.
thorns of the future: what's your biggest regret?
witchita: I wish I started taking this music shit more seriosuly earlier, when I was young there was a lot of scammy producers that didn't even finished your songs, or delivered super late. I wish I could started recroding and producing myself since I was a teen. I did write songs there but they're lost in my mind or in some lazy ass's PC.
thorns of the future: tell us about your biggest wish when it comes to your music.
witchita: I hope to drop music until I pass, my biggest wish is to keep trying to innovate, to make better songs and to my music to find it's audience, so it can fulfill it's purpose.
we would like to thank witchita for answering all of our questions. we really appreciate you. that's all for now.

an interview with lucy lamb — a talk about couchsurfing, australia and the afterlife
today's thorns of the future guest is lucy lamb, a rising star of modern post-crystal castles electronic music, inspired by early 2010s fashion. lucy is an artist from melbourne, australia. she describes her music as "alt, indie, electronica, dance-pop and witch house with elements of darkwave". lucy is a producer and a singer, as well as a lyricist. her first ever release was a single titled "hello", which was self-released by lamb through distrokid.

thorns of the future: how did you start your journey with music?
lucy: I’ve always loved making music ever since I was a little kid. Started singing lessons when I was like 7 years old, fell in love with Miley Cyrus which was the reason I wanted to become a singer lol. Started making music when I was about 16, and released my first EP when I was 18.
thorns of the future: what are some of your favourite songs right now?
lucy: My favourite songs right now are Canary Wharf Drift by Bassvictim and Your Face by Wisp.
thorns of the future: who inspired you to make music?
lucy: Literally Miley Cyrus in the Hannah Montana tv show I was so obsessed.

thorns of the future: what is your craziest experience during a live show?
lucy: I played in this club in Tokyo which was a wild experience for me. There was no stage so I was just on the danceflooor with the crowd and kind of just walking around like weaving through everybody with my microphone which I definitely wasn’t used to.
thorns of the future: what software do you use to make music?
lucy: I use Logic Pro, I’m still learning how to use it properly though.
thorns of the future: what's "the other side" about?
lucy: The Other Side is about crossing over to the after life pretty much. It talks about being scared to die and the things you would miss. It can kind of be interpreted as being about any sort of transition from one thing to another, any sort of change, but I think the obvious one (especially when watching the music video) is the transition to death. It’s just a fictional sort of story if you will.

thorns of the future: are you planning any new releases?
lucy: I have 3 singles coming out in the next few months all with music videos. ‘Bed of Snow’ is coming out on September 20th and I’m so excited for it. All the songs are of course dance/electronic but I’m leaning a little bit into like indie rock elements in two of them, with the third being like a full commitment to witch house.
thorns of the future: what's a country you would never travel to?
lucy: Probably North Korea for obvious reasons.
thorns of the future: tell us about the things you enjoy most, except for making music.
lucy: I love travelling that’s my second favourite thing in the world after music. I went on a year long trip around the world in 2022 which was absolutely amazing. I went on a 5 month road-trip around Australia earlier this year too. It’s a little hard to travel like that while also doing music so I think for now I’m taking a break from travelling. I also love animals, especially weird exotic ones. The weirder they look the more I love them because it just makes me thing how weird and amazing the world is.

thorns of the future: have you ever met anyone famous from the electronic scene? who was it and how was your experience with them?
lucy: I can’t say I have yet. Someone I’d LOVE to meet is the guys from Air. They’re a huge inspiration for me and one of the most talented electronic duos I know.
thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
lucy: The riskiest thing I’ve done was probably when my friend and I did couchsurfing through Europe. There’s this app called couchsurfing where you can arrange to stay at strangers’ houses for free while you’re travelling. We were pretty nervous every time we stayed with someone because there was always the question of like what’s in it for them? Why are they letting random people stay at their house for free? The people we stayed with sometimes turned out to be weird and kind of put us on edge but a lot of the time they were really cool people too so. We were literally on such a tight budget we had no other option but to do our accomodation this way.
thorns of the future: are there artists you truly hate? why?
lucy: I don’t really hate any artist in terms of the kind of music they do like I respect all genres and whatever kind of music you wanna make even if I don’t like it. Like it’s got nothing to do with me so I don’t really care enough to HATE any artist.

thorns of the future: what is the best live show you've ever been to?
lucy: There’s this experimental electronic duo from Melbourne called Npcede. I played a show with them and they were really great. It was a guy singing and a guy playing bass. They both had like really amazing stage presence and interacted with the crowd so much. The lead singer started playing the electric guitar with a violin bow halfway through as well I loved it. I also have to mention seeing the band Film Noir in Berlin, they’re an indie rock band and the lead singer’s energy was so compelling it made the whole thing sooo immersive and fun.
thorns of the future: name one thing you really hate about australia.
lucy: Honestly I think Australia is a great place to live I think it’s beautiful, it’s diverse and it’s very liveable. If I had to say one thing I hated about it I guess just how far away it is from everything lol because it’s always so hard and expensive to travel anywhere.
thorns of the future: tell us about the weirdest thing that has happened to you as an artist.
lucy: The weirdest thing that’s happened to me as an artist is probably when someone randomly approached me on the street when I was in Tromso, Norway, and told me they recognise me and love my music. Was superrrr weird for me because Tromso is a pretty small town with not many people and it was just really random to meet someone who knows me there.

we would like to thank lucy lamb for answering all of our questions. we really appreciate you. that’s all for now.

an interview with razorz of EPILEPTICS — a talk about music, molly and life
today, we had the honor to interview razorz, the frontperson of EPILEPTICS, once a witch-house & electronic band, now a reggaeton, post-hardcore & rave one-person project. EPILEPTICS has been in the industry since 2013. the band quickly gained popularity because of the self-titled LP released through the YOUTH 1984 label. the LP has been adored by fans of the witch-house & electronic genre. songs like Esoteric, Heroin Chic and Carpathian hit the charts, making EPILEPTICS a legend and a huge influence in the international Witch House scene, along with their chaotic live shows and then-elusive personas, setting the blueprint of aesthetic and sound for many bands and artists to come.
[this interview includes explicit content & mentions of self harm. some viewers might find this content triggering. proceed with caution.]
thorns of the future: first question: how did you find out that you wanted to be a music producer?
razorz: Out of necessity, I was 15-16 playing in black metal, crust and grindcore bands, I always realized that I was the only one writing songs and throwing ideas. When me and Amanda Failure started EPILEPTICS, we had no idea how to do electronic music, I read somewhere about this software "Reason 4". I cracked a copy and started messing with it, I was amazed that you could do music, an entire song on a laptop, a 2008 HP mini to be precise, we came from the world of guitars, amps, pedals and drums, we couldn't believe it. Now I do records and remixes for other people and I can tell you 100% that I'm not sure of what I am doing, I can't let other people do my songs cause I am very specific with everything, only a couple of occassions this has happened, MYKKA from Argentina, a superstar prod. she produced for Bad Bunny, Duki, Bhavi, Ysy A, and a bunch of other important people and she made some of the heaviest, nastiest dubstep ever before that, she has legit Gold Records and is one of the top producers from Latin America, so she made the beat for Suicide Season because I bugged her for a year and she thought that EPLPTCS was kinda cool and weird and SVGAWA (Ukrainian Witch House rockstar) a brother to me is the only person on earth that reads my mind and knows what I want, they are the 2 only people who have made beats for me, I became a producer but that was never the goal, when we started I did not even know what a producer was.
thorns of the future: tell us about the craziest person you've ever seen in the crowd during your live show.
razorz: On a festival in Moscow 2018 there was this girl and a dude that tried god-knows whatever designer drug and they were on the floor, could not move their legs or talk but they were moving their torsos to the music, they were in the back and I was impressed how unphased everybody was, like "hey, I think these guys are dying" and nobody gave a shit, here in Mexico in like 2017 some girls and dudes showed up with mutilated arms to the front row and I used to cut myself on some shows if I had a vibe going on, at Station Hall in Moscow I stagedived at the end with wounds open in the arms and some girl I believe licked them at the stagedive, that was crazy, after me, King Plague was gonna DJ and she refused to until the stage was cleaned up, I left it full of blood, that's the dumb stuff I was doing at the time, when I saw that followers of the band were destroying themselves from us openly encouraging the use of drugs and self mutilation, I stopped with that, a couple of people I really cared about actually died from that, there was this infectious "bug" on tours that was not healthy for anybody, we were dangerous to ourselves and the people around us, but that's the past.
thorns of the future: what were your thoughts during your first ever live show?
razorz: As EPILEPTICS? I was very nervous because Failure got in trouble and couldn't make it to the show but I didn't know, I played at like 3am at this indie little festival in a hall in here, a girl complained it was too noisy and it was hurting her ears, there is video of that show, gonna upload it to YouTube and about Failure, days later she answered the phone and turns out she was caught drunk driving that evening so her parents were getting her out of detention that night, I barely remember it, I was coked out of my mind and drinking anisette on that one, but I had played a bunch of metal/punk shows before EPLPTCS which are the worst, after coming from those scenes you are 120% bulletproof to anything, nothing is worse than those shows, you work and play your ass off for nothing in the tiniest places in the worst conditions with the worst crowds.
thorns of the future: what made you switch from electronic music to your current genre?
razorz: We never intended to be a Witch House band, we just wanted to blend what Salem and Glass Teeth were doing with UK rave music and jungle, we were "adopted" and thrown in the bunch by the people and we are grateful for that, I see the impact now that us and the Russian bands and prods had on the current musical landscape, we were a bunch of angsty teenagers that just wanted to unleash. Anyway I lived the Witch House thing to the fullest, I played all the fests, met everybody, got signed twice and made money, I was in Russia when Witch House was mainstream music there, you would walk into a Bershka store and they were playing Crossparty, it was not underground at all, in Spain it was a big deal as well, before Sidewalks toured the circuit, before Crim3s, I did, I saw it and we all knew it was gonna end eventually, everybody was living the lifestyle, everybody was running out of ideas and americans put the final nail in the coffin of Witch House with their stupid songs about ghosts, terror and daft shit like that, around 2019 the scene was dead worldwide and you can ask anybody who was there, Dann K left the band and it was only me now, I always hated rap music but we were played on Mexican radio a legendary station in here called Reactor 105, they believed in us and played our songs, one day I was listening and Bring the Noize by M.I.A. came up, I was floored, I could not believe the sound of that, so I started listening more, started to consume UK grime, weird ethnic stuff like kuduro (it's a music genre) and soundsystems, reggaeton was huge in here always and at that time there were this really dense/heavy loud af tracks coming from South America along with the trap scene from Argentina and I was into that as well, I needed a rebranding of everything and now I was gonna front so I did "lost u" which is a monster witch pop song as a goodbye for the "Version 1" of the band, plus me being razorz and EPILEPTICS being pretty much my life for 5 years at that point, I was not 18 anymore and you have to think like "I guess this is what I am gonna do, so I need to be more commercial" and at that time I was partying a lot and liking commercial af music and seemed reachable so I went for the full selling out if you will and I don't regret it at all, underground is not fun.
thorns of the future: how old were you when you first started making music?
razorz: I always played music, my mum is a huge music fan, she was an 80's goth and she also liked metal so I got my 1st drumkit when I was 3, then a guitar at 6, she was very supportive, my dad didn't really care, I never learned theory, so I would play CDs and learn from there, my first song I'd say I was 12 (?) it was some sort of a Carcass death metal song. So it went from there, there is this ultra depressive neoclassical autumn vibes piano/acoustic guitar project called 'Bläire' (which was my pseudonym in black metal bands I played in) I recorded it alone in my bedroom when I was like 15, it was supposed to come out on cassette on a Finnish black metal label but it closed 2 weeks before the release and that broke me so I put a couple of those tracks as hidden tracks on the 1st and 2nd EPILEPTICS records (Autumnal Black Metal Tape and Santander respectively) I will eventually put that whole EP myself on Spotify.
thorns of the future: who's your biggest inspiration?
razorz: Way too many people to mention, but Liam Howlett (The Prodigy), Skrillex (who I was a fan of since From First to Last) and Ethan Kath (him exclusively, fuck that other person in that band) made it seem realistic cause they were punky guys like me. Nowadays I get inspired by anything, many people wouldn't believe all the shit I listen to, all over the place.
thorns of the future: what's your favourite song that you produced?
razorz: I am very proud of Nadia Comaneci, that song took me 2 years to write when I was homeless (by choice) and on meth, it encapsulates the hate, actually becoming insane and paranoia like no other song, it has this totally incoherent lyrics that range from violence and death to school shootings, me being Hannah Montana, killing police officers, killing rock music, La Santa Muerte, asexuality as a way of living, suicide, life in the 3rd world, anti materialism, etc. 2 minutes, all of that in 2 fucking minutes, the music video is just a masterpiece too, that the director (Conejo Roto) envisioned, very disturbing and grotesque but not in the obvious way, I love it and its like 4 different music genres squeezed in 2 minutes, again: awesome, it's like a manifesto.
thorns of the future: tell us how you start the process of making music.
razorz: Listening to music, and just observing life, I can be listening to Britney and Kylie Minogue and steal a vocal melody from them, then maybe a drum pattern from Diplo and then a guitar lead part from old Bloc Party, The Kills or The Libertines and a synth from 100gecs and then a flow and snare from a Favela Funk song, or a figure from a riff from Darkthrone, my way of writing music is straight up stealing parts of songs from totally opposite genres and mashing them together, it is rare that a song comes to my head but sometimes that happens.
thorns of the future: how did you come up with the name for your band?
razorz: I have a cousin that was diagnosed with epilepsy that I didnt see often back when we started the band, he had a seizure and I was alone with him at our grandma's house, he had this fucked up convulsion and I was alone with him, his eyes went blank and his mouth was tweaking bad, I told Failure about it and she had a crush on Ian from Joy Division (lame) who was an epileptic too, so she named the band, I thought it was a stupid name and I still hate it, we released 'Esoteric' like weeks later and we kicked the Witch House/rave scene along with the russians and it became this minor hit in a matter of days so we couldn't change it, I still hate the name and think it is silly as fuck, almost 10 years still bothers me.
thorns of the future: what would you like to say to your fans?
razorz: I hate the word fans, I like calling them friends, I'd like to tell them to not have kids, that's the best advice I can give and to never listen to anybody, live your fucking lives however you want.

thorns of the future: what's your favourite drug and why?
razorz: I'm gonna go with molly, I had some of the best times of my life on that one and I did lots of music discovery with my then best friend Axl, we would do tons of molly, not eat for a week and just listen to music nonstop, Dann K. (vocalist/synths on The Sun Hurts My Eyes) got me into shooting coke right in the fucking neck for a bit but it was too awesome so I stopped and went to regular snorting I guess, I have a permanent damage on my palate from doing so much coke for years.
thorns of the future: is there a religion you hate most?
razorz: Oh man... haha anything that involves bombing, cowardly unaliving kids in other countries and treating women like garbage, not gonna name it but I think everybody with a braincell will know what I'm talking about.
thorns of the future: your most unliked subculture is…
razorz: Punks, fucking losers, lame mediocre, miserable people who like to pretend they live in 1985, metalheads too, are pretty stupid and childish and anybody who is playing glam music or trying to be Guns N' Roses in 2024 is amusing to me, oh djent is pretty fucking lame too.
youtube
thorns of the future: tell us your least liked artist - is it because of their music or their personality?
razorz: Gonna name a few in no particular order: XXXTentacion, Lil Peep, Arca bothers the shit out of me, mediocre techno, this Sarah Landry bitch who plays "hard techno" which is just a kick loop going on for 3 hrs what's that shit about? Nobody likes it but fucking dunces pretend to like it cause it's "cool", Nina Kraviz, dumb fuck thinking she is modeling while DJing, this stupid pop punk revival bands talking about pizza and smelling their mothers ass they are even doing that here in Mexico, it is insulting, bunch of fucking sons of rich privileged idiots, My Chemical Romance, Tool, 98% of American Witch House talking about ghosts and Halloween and shit lmao, post-2013 Grimes (hung out with her in 2016 and she was annoying as fuck) K pop boybands and girlbands, lame electronic like Porter Robinson, that BLAND stupid disco shit that Daft Punk did, white people acting black, Machine Gun Kelly, DJs who have girls twerking at their sets piss me off beyond belief, Drake is one of the softest and most pathetic individuals to ever put music out, etc man, my hate is unlimited and I have chilled out a lot. Honorable mention to this dumb fuck Anyma, he was Grimes' boyfriend or something, that instead of playing MUSIC he just puts this dumbass lame visuals on his shows, J Balvin and Maluma along with all that soft reggaeton pop bullshit is pretty embarrasing as well, they think us mexicans LOVE that garbage and we don't.
thorns of the future: what's the riskiest thing you've ever done?
razorz: For my own security I can't talk much about it but I am amazed that I was not killed, that I never had a fatal overdose and that I am not in prison talking to you today, whatever you think I've done multiply that by 10 and you will be kind of close, I lived the street life to the max when I was a meth addict and I don't like all this people around the world rapping or singing about it like it's cool cause it's not, the fear of police, paranoia, the nothing, hearing voices and seeing things that are not there, the cold, the "I don't know if I'm gonna come back alive from this one" or going to a free clinic to check if you have AIDS are things I do not miss at all.
we would like to thank razorz of EPILEPTICS for answering all of our questions. we really appreciate you. that's all for now.

a welcoming post.
we are thorns of the future. we do interviews.
thorns of the future is an interview tumblr, where we reach out to underground & mainstream electronic, witch-house and other genre artists to ask them questions about their music, their personal lives, their future plans, and controversial matters. this blog is supposed to take you back to the 2000s, the era of tumblr blogs, tumblr controversies, where podcasts, video interviews or radio interviews weren't so popular, and most interviews were in a written form.
note #1: if you are an electronic/witch-house/etc. artist, and you want to have an interview, you can reach out to us through tumblr (https://thornsofthefuture.tumblr.com/ask).
note #2: on the thorns of the future blog, we like to spice things up by asking quite *spicy* questions. if you dislike that idea, we can give you some less *spicy* questions, but what's the fun in that?
note #3: we do not always agree with what is said by the artists & bands we interview. if you have some objections to what has been said, don't contact nor blame the blog, contact or blame the artist that has been interviewed. we simply just post what is being said by the interviewed people.
note #4: we are a bunch of young adults (well, mostly) without a stable job. if you want an interview, but you wish to get paid for it, i'd rather suggest you don't even ask for one. we can't pay you even if we wanted to.
note #5: this blog is our only blog. if you believe someone is impersonating thorns of the future, please contact us through tumblr (https://thornsofthefuture.tumblr.com/ask).
note #6: if you have been interviewed by us before, and you would like the interview to be deleted from our blog, make sure to contact us the same way you contacted us to do the interview.
note #7: all images included in our interviews have been sent to us by the artists themselves or were taken from google images. we always credit whoever took the images, however if we forget to, don't hesitate to remind us (https://thornsofthefuture.tumblr.com/ask).
note #8: we don't only post interviews, we can also sometimes post news about celebrities from the genre. if you are a celebrity included in one of our posts, and you would like it removed, make sure to contact us (https://thornsofthefuture.tumblr.com/ask). we will also post music recommendations and other sorts of posts, however our main type of posts will still be interviews.
note #9: if you believe an artist said something offensive about you personally, any legal disputes should be resolved with you and the artist and not you and the interview blog. we assume no liability for any legal issues.
more notes will be added in the future.
that's all. enjoy, or don't. peace.
