it is an often-repeated fact that alphinaud and alisaie are the youngest entrants to the studium ever at age 12, and like it's crazy that these infants got into harvard, but the narrative does not seem to remember/notice/care that thancred was an archon by 17 (he has the archon marks in the 1.0 ul'dah start flashbacks, where minfilia's 12 and he's 17). also he got picked up by louisoix as "an adolescent" so he had spent at most 7 years in sharlayan by the time he got his PhD in "espionage and survival". SHAKES HIM. WHAT DID THEY DO TO YOU LITTLE MAN. WHAT DID YOU GET UP TO IN SHARLAYAN SPY SCHOOL. DID THEY MAKE YOU A TOOL, BOY. DID THEY HONE YOU INTO THEIR SHARP OBJECT

aetheryte stations and plazas as a transitional space. the quiet humming of the crystal. the blue light. muted goodbyes and exhilirated "good to see you again!"s. the salesmen peddling potions that they swear will make you able to teleport. the ones watching it spin as they wait for someone long past due.
how soothing wouldn't it be to sit by the aetheryte and let time pass? the air feels a little thicker right next to it, charged with ambient aether. see the ones attuning, tapping into the lifestream with furrowed brows and parted lips. feel how the city inevitably bends around it, passing around it like a river is split by a rock.
"I'll see you over there", a firm grip, a forceful smile. what one person can traverse in seconds another will journey towards for days. the novelty of an adventurer popping into existence. the horror of not all of them following along.
the inn posters and the food stalls, the helpfuls and the not so much. benches where the wood and stone have been worn smooth by decades and generations of travel.

Any ffxiv 1.0 knowledge havers:
Were the ruins of Nym found across La Noscea something that existed on the map back then or were the remnants that we see today something that was uncovered due to the seventh umbral calamity?

Unfinished Nald's Reflection
Tumblr media
Okay, so here's something I stumbled upon randomly.
I was getting material for the future, and stumbled upon an out of bounds area.
This area led me to a cave, and this room was at the end. This is unusual - I happened upon an "edge of the world" scenario earlier today, and this room mainly looked like there were world objects that were supposed to be there, but either didn't load in or weren't placed there. I had a hunch what it could, be and sure enough...
Tumblr media
This is Thal's Respite, nestled north of Camp Drybone. We'll talk more about it in the future, but for now, take a look at the picture of it and compare it to the picture above. Especially look at the left hand side - that little torch area with the ledge fits exactly with the missing texture, and the statue area itself also fits!
In ARR, there are two statues of Nald'thal. One is north of Drybones, called Thal's Respite. One is in the Red Labyrinth (south of Little Ala Mhigo), called Nald's Reflection. In 1.0...there is only Thal's Respite. There is no Nald's Reflection. Given the lore of Ul'dah and Nald'thal, this doesn't make sense - there are two statues because Ul'dah considered Nald and Thal to be "seperate but whole" - they are twins, although part of the same godhead.
Thus, it doesn't make sense to only have one of those shrines in Thanalan in 1.0, especially when there are two of these statues in Ul'dah in 1.0 (in the THM guild and in Milvaneth Sacrarium).
Seems to be that there was going to be one, but they either ran out of time or budget or simply didn't want to finish it.
What is really interesting to me is the placement - this unfinished room was found literally right in Zana'rak, which is the Amaljaa's main area. It's their home. This room was found in a blocked off area. I noticed that there seemed to be a cave entrance on the other side, so I phased through the barricade. I was expecting to see the edge of the world...but not this. If the original area was meant to be Zanar'ak...this has interesting implications for the original plot of FFXIV. How pissed off would the Uldahn's be that one of Nald'thal's shrines be occupied by the Amalj'aa? Especially since Nald represented the living and most importantly for the desert nation -commerce. Ul'dah is a country built on commerce, so much so that the city is in an ever fight between the Sultana and the merchants. What a plot point that would be! "Hey Warrior of Light/1.0 Adventurer, the Amalj'aa is defiling this statue of our patron diety, go and run them out of their home." However, this is just stipulation. It's possibly it was only worked on in an out of bounds area outside Zanar'ak and then moved closer to another location. Given that is in another location in ARR, a more neutral location, just makes me wonder the original plan for Nald's Reflection. Given what happens later in ARR's story in the post Shadowbringer patches, it's probably a good thing that it was moved to be in a neutral location - those Ul'dahns probably would never live with the idea of the beastmen occupying the shrine. TL;DR: There is no Nald's Reflection in 1.0, but looks like it was merely unfinished. It is located out of bounds near Zanarak, at the end of a cave entrance you wouldn't normally have access to. Given the story of ARR, this has interesting consequences.

What's behind Lalai?
Tumblr media
Lalai is the BLM job mentor, and she sits in a plaza outside the Miner's Guild (where also the BLU job mentor is). The plaza itself looks a lot like the plaza outside of the Arrzaneth Ossuary (aka the Thaumaturge Guild), and it's no surprise because this area is a sister location of sorts called the Milvaneth Sacrarium. And inside it...actually looks a lot like the THM Guild, with also a statue of Nald, but holding what looks to be a vase or some sort of pike (I do not know my weapons), as opposed to a wavy and crazy sword. It was probably cut from ARR because it looks so similarly to the THM Guild. According to an NPC outside the area in ARR, it was heavily damaged during the Calamity.
Will the damage ever be repaired? Probably not, because there's already a place in Ul'dah that looks exactly like this.

actually the fact that people legitimately believe Amaurot was a paradise are so funny to me. Girl what do you think utopia means. Do you think Natsuko Ishikawa, who has shown the most media literacy of any lead writer of any video game ever read Utopia by Thomas More and said "I'm going to build this society based off this book but I'm going to uncritically make it a paradise."
