Fall of Dalamud
Chapter 4: Missing Spices
As they made their way past the bustling markets, and ignoring the calls of some rather enthusiastic peddlers, the two had come across a checkpoint that blocked off entrance to the main port of the city. On the other side they could see various merchants and ships. Some were preparing to take off, and others had just landed. Most likely preparing to sell off their merchandise in the markets, or to go off to other settlements within Vylbrand. Some had strange garbs, ones Vari didn’t recognize.
Before she could stare off into space she heard Viansa snapping her fingers. As she turned she saw the Roegadyn woman smiling at her as she stood near a large doorway. A strange sign hung over the door, with a curious symbol depicting an astrolabe. As Vari stepped closer her ears perked up as she heard yelling behind the door.
Viansa put a finger to her lips before gently opening the doors.. Vari being bombarded by the shoutings of an enraged Roegadyn man. In front of him was a tired looking miqo’te woman. The Roegadyn started to scream again, and Vari’s ear folded at his raised voice.
“What in the bleedin’ hells do you MEAN I can’t get my goods?!” He growled out at the woman, and Vari gave Viansa a confused look.
Viansa started to whisper as the Roegadyn continued to shout and yell. “The Arcanist’s Guild oversees all merchants that come into Limsa Lominsa.. They take stock of everything. And have the authority to withhold any if they deem it necessary.” She spoke with a calm and clear voice, trying to not raise Roegadyn’s anger further. “You will see your goods once we it has been properly sear-”
“Bleedin’ hells woman, I just means to sell my wares! Why the scrutiny?!” The woman stared at the man as he raised his voice again.. Clearly more annoyed now.
“...A change of policy. ser.. We always keep a close eye on those that are new to our city.” The Miqo’te glared at the man.. And he backed away a bit from her harsh gaze. “Now, will that be all or will I need to alert the authorities about a public disturbance?”
“You can’t just-!” The Roegadyn started again.. But backed down from the Miqo’te lass’ piercing glare. “Grr… fine!” The Roegadyn let out a grumble as he turned and walked away.. Pushing past both Viansa and Vari.
Vari tilted her head at the frustrated merchant, and Viansa crossed her arms.. “..That’s new..” She muttered, and turned her head to the receptionist. Who was looking at the two before she could get back to work.
“If you two have business, please bring it now.. If not, allow me to get back to work.” She spoke in a rough, frustrated tone.. Both women walked up to her, separated by the desk in front of her.
“What is it that I can help you both with?”
Viansa tapped Vari’s shoulder, and gave a smile to her. “Let me, alright?” She turned to look back at the woman, and Vari just turned her head to look away. “We heard that the guild is having.. Issues in keeping its incoming supplies safe?”
The woman gave Viansa a look.. “We were told to look for Kalishas?” she continued, and the woman sighed and crossed her arms.
“Yes… He was the one we put in charge of overlooking any shipments that come to the docks. To take tally, and keep them secure… Though he’s done a rather piss poor job at it.” The woman pinched her nose.. “..I’ll grab him if you wish.. Though don’t expect much, he’s a new apprentice at the guild..”
As she finished she went around to the side, back behind a door.. Viansa crossed her arms and stared at the Arcanists coming and going.. The guild seemed to be buzzing like an angry hive with the amount of foot traffic.
“What’s wrong?” Her mind was cut off from the Viera’s sudden intrusion. And Viansa turned her head to see her companion looking at her from the corner of her eye.
“..Seems I underestimated the situation..” Viansa whispered, trying to not alert any of the Arcanists in the room. “If they’re this upset, then that means something of great value has been taken.. Most likely what was ever stolen from the Seventh Sage’s delivery.”
“That’s the pirate-” Viansa quickly shot her a harsh look ,and Vari closed her mouth quickly upon seeing the suddenly hostile stare.
“Not so loud.. Don’t talk about it so openly.” Viansa softened her look as Vari raised an eyebrow. “..It’s not a good idea to talk about them that loud.. Just.. If someone stole something from the Seventh Sage, the Kraken’s Arms are NOT happy..” She looked back at the Arcanists.. “..Whatever it is, it seems like that the Arcanist’s Guild wants to get it back as soon as possible..”
As they two watched the Arcanists in the guild run around.. They heard a pair of feet running towards them. As they turned they saw another Miqo’te.. This one a man with deep red hair, with his pure white roots showing on the top of his head. He was dressed in a standard full body robe, with silver adornments around the neck and arms. A pair of glasses on his face that were pinched onto his nose to keep them from falling off.
He panted for a moment as he stopped in front of the two, and looked up at them. A pair of dark burgundy red eyes staring at them. A set of markings placed around his eyes to emphasize the color of them. As he looked between the two, he started to speak.. Having an accent that makes it clear he isn’t from Limsa. “H-Hello, s-sorry for the wait!” He had a nervous twitch to his voice.
“It’s alright friend, I assume you’re Kalishas?” Viansa asked, having a gentle smile.. Though it seemed to do little to calm the young man’s nerves.
“R-Right, I am.” The Miqo’te sighed and put a hand over his chest and bowed to the two.. “K-Kalishas Valens, I am one of the record keepers of Mealvan’s Gate.” He spoke, Vari noting a sort of nervousness in the young man’s voice.
“Excellent! We were told to come and aid you if we were able. You’ve been having issues?” Viansa said, and Kalishas seemed to tense up.. Both women noticed a few looks given to them. Specifically by other members of the Arcanist’s guild, and they didn’t seem exactly friendly.
“...I assume you made some sort of mistake.” Vari muttered out, and Kalishas seemed to get even more nervous by that.
“I-I! Well!” He started to stutter.. But sighed and ran a hand through his hair. “May we continue this outside..?”
Vari gave a curt nod before turning and quickly leaving. The faster out of that stuffy place the better. Viansa however gave Kalishas a sympathetic smile, and patted his shoulder to have him follow along with her.
Outside Viansa and Vari stood by the gates leading to the outer parts of Mealvan’s Gate. Kalishas standing in front of them, still having a look of unease.
“Apologies.. I.. Just got myself into a bad situation.. I was only recently taken in by the Arcanist’s Guild, and to them so far I’ve shown nothing but incompetance..”
“Miss a crate or two when taking inventory?” Viansa jokes, but her smile fades as Kalishas actually nodded.
“I.. I was put in charge of overlooking and cataloging whatever comes to port. Putting goods to names, where said goods are going. Whether they’re leaving, or coming into Limsa..” Vari raised an eye at his prattling, and Kalishas tensed up.
Viansa coughed into her hand, to try and lighten the mood. “Ahem.. I’m guessing this is about the.. Er.. missing merchandise?”
Kalishas gave a worried nod, glancing about. “I was in charge of overlooking the goods.. I was the last one to see them and yet..” He fidgeted with his fingers as he stopped talking for a moment.. “Yet.. Everytime I finish taking stock of whatever we get.. I would find several things missing.”
“Would that include items from the Seventh Sage?” Vari asked rather quickly, Kalishas’ face turning pale.
“I-Indeed.. T-That particular lost shipment of goods is.. What has everyone so frustrated, because,” he stopped to take a breath to calm himself down. “W-well, if the Seventh Sage doesn’t get their spice shipments it’ll be bad news for the guild..”
Vari let out a huff.. The idea of working to return a pirate gang’s goods didn’t sit well with her.. And yet..
“If you don’t find them and see them returned, you’ll face the repercussions.” Vari said bluntly, and when Kalishas gave a nod she sighed. “Right… Of course. Where do you keep the shipments?”
Kalishas gave her a confused look, and Viansa just smiled. “I believe she means we’ll take the job.” She chuckled.
“O-Oh! Excellent!” Kalishas gave a sigh of relief.. “U-Um.. O-Once you find the culprit, and return the stolen goods, the guild will give you your payment!”
“And..?” Vari pressed again, crossing her arms to get the point across.
“O-Oh! The.. shipments that we hold have been moved to inside the guild.. Th-The bottom level, where we usually have training.” He paused, thinking for a moment.. “I’m.. not quite sure how the thief would get down there without us noticing.. B-But I don’t really want to risk it?”
“Then we’ll stake out in the room then! I’m sure we can find quite a few places to hide and out of sight.” Vari nodded along as Viansa spoke. “And once we hear anything strange, we’ll jump out and try to bag the thief!”
“I believe that’ll work.” Vari agreed, “Can you keep yourself to the shadows well enough?”
“Of course!” Viansa smiled as she patted her chest. “I know how to keep myself hidden!!”
The loud nature of Viansa’s personality filled Vari with.. Doubts. Yet she chose to trust in her companion despite that.
“I-I’ll go and inform the guild master of your intentions.” Kalishas put a hand to his chest, and gave a quick bow to the two before walking back to the doors of the guild. Disappearing into the guild, Viansa walked towards one side of the alley they were in and placed her back against it. Vari stayed in place as she looked out past the gates and to the sea.
The idea of working to, even if a minor way, to help a criminal organization was.. Unnerving for her. Yet she needed the pay from this job.
“Need to get out of this city…” Vari muttered to herself as she leaned against the wall. She thought it's seaside nature would be soothing, but the constant pick pockets and gangs only added to her stress. She couldn’t only hope her daughter wasn’t getting involved with any of those elements…
She glanced over to Viansa.. The Roegadyn bard was humming as she was strumming along on her harp.
“From Menphina’s hearth, to Halone’s…” She was gently singing.. Though the words were muttered, it was hard to tell what exactly it was. It appeared to be something about the gods they worshiped in these lands. Halone was… some sort of war goddess from what she could gather. Menphina was a goddess of love it would seem.
She sighed, and looked back ahead… but stopped as she caught something from the corner of her eye. A figure lurking in the docks past the gate.
She narrowed her eyes and walked past Viansa and pushed past the iron gateway. The Roegadyn looked at her with a confused gaze. Vari felt the taste of the seawater as she stepped into the open air past the tunnel, and she turned to where the figure had gone.. And she saw a strange sight.
A tail… A tail to neither a Miqo’te or a Hrothgar, but a race she was surprised to see all the way here in this foreign land. As she stepped closer, peering around the crate she placed her hand near her katana. As her palm was placed on the pommel she quickly moved around to block any escape…
Though she felt her breath leave her lungs as she saw the figure. A small Au Ri child… Sixteen at most. Pure, obsidian black scales covering their face. Soft dots of purple marking each scale as if flecked on by a paint brush. Glistening jewel eyes, one as deep as a brilliant sapphire, and the other as a brilliant amethyst.
Pure white, matted, hair tangled around their horns. One set curved down in a triangular shape, and the other angled forward, near their eyes. Black markings were tattooed across his dark skin.
Vari blinked, seeing that child dressed in nothing but what could… charitably be called rags. A child…
“...Hello little one…” She whispered, kneeling down and looking at the Au Ra at eye level. “What are…?” She stopped as she saw that the crate the Au Ra was near had a scorch mark… burned open. And in their hand was a sack full of whatever was inside…
She looked back at the Au Ra… and she felt her blood turn cold. In their hand was a burst of arcane flames… And next moment, Vari felt her face heat up as they were hurled towards her.
