I’m realising that being a Stede girlie is really affecting how I interpret ofmd and there’s some opinions out there that I really just can’t get behind because I’m so focused on my little guy.

Like I saw a tweet the other day saying how mean and unfair Stede was in ep3 when he walks away from Izzy and I’m just like????

Not only does he think he had a hand in killing the love of his life but also the last time they saw each other Izzy had sold him out to the British navy and he was about to be executed. Like I think he can be a little bit of a bitch to him after that but maybe that’s just me

Ahsoka is a young ambush predator, and does not handle the 'hurry up and wait' pace of life between battles well at all

so Rex develops a game for her:

Rex will discreetly tag one of the troopers with the equivalent of a space kick me sign on the back, and Ahsoka then has to isolate them from the herd and pounce

not only does this serve as Enrichment in his Commander's Enclosure, it's also a good test of his men's situational awareness

not to mention, it's a good mechanism for a little petty revenge every now and then

he'll occasionally also 'loan her out' to Wolffe or Cody as a chance to stress-test their own troopers' level of vigilance (and give Torrent a break from her reign of terror)

I've seen a few takes on here recently about how Stede's character was mishandled in the latter part of s2 - particularly during this scene of e7.

But isn't that missing the whole point of this episode? Stede does lose sight of himself here. He finally feels admired after a lifetime of feeling like the butt of every joke - and yes, he gets completely caught up in that.

It's worth pointing out that his behaviour in this episode is normal pirate shit in the world of OFMD - yes, even setting that dude on fire (and let's not forget, said dude did threaten to kill Stede first). I mean, no-one around him is shocked- they all have a good ol' chuckle at Stede's antics!

But seeing Stede behaving in this way is supposed to feel uncomfortable. This is the culture of piracy that he has been trying to change, but which he is now allowing to change him.

In no way is the message of this episode that Stede has peaked here - that he is the fully actualized version of himself. By the end of the episode he has crashed and burned and lost everything.

Rather, I think we see here (and during the run-in with Ned in e6) that Stede cannot exist in the pirate world while remaining true to himself. Which makes his decision to retire (temporarily?) even more poignant - he and Ed are both saving themselves as much as they are saving each other

Ed's little speech before leaning in for the first kiss is so powerful. And not just what he says, but the way he says it.

After the 'what makes Ed happy?' line, you can just see Ed steel himself. He's going to be brave- he's finally going to cross that invisible line and make his feelings known. And he's terrified.

He doesn't look at Stede. His words are somewhat faltering. He pauses, so unsure of how his words will land.

Even after he speaks, he's afraid to look Stede in the eye - at least, at first.

And of course, he is met with an expression of such deep fondness and delight. How could he not lean in?

This scene is just so goddamn earnest and realistic. Ed's nervousness is so palpable. Every time I watch this scene, my pulse races and my palms sweat in sympathy with Ed's.

I think this may be my absolute favourite feelings declaration of all time

for all the freaky stuff I read and write, I do genuinely think Ed and Stede revel in the banality of their relationship, and the life they're building together is going to be the most vanilla shit ever. They're giggling as they cook the easier soup recipe together and Ed laminates the chore wheel and they mock fight about "pick up your socks!!" and they take weeks to land on curtains that are mostly different shades of the same colour and they plan complicated date nights but decide to stay in and just eat cereal for dinner on the day of, and they're so so happy that they get to do this now and be just like other people and every little wet plate Stede hands to Ed to wipe just adds to their joy and love ❤️
