I'm not very plugged into deltarune or undertale- why're people he/him-ing Kris?? (If you don't mind explaining, feel free to delete)

unfortunately this IS going to be a long answer because I kind of also have to talk about undertale to give you the full context here. Undertale, the predecessor game to deltarune, features a silent protagonist named Frisk. Frisk is a nonbinary character and uses exclusively they/them pronouns, but because they are a silent protagonist--i.e. a backstory-less, personality-less blank slate that the player can project themself onto--there were significant debates when undertale first came out about whether the they/them pronouns used in game dialog were frisk's canon pronouns or if they were placeholders and frisk's gender was intended to be up to player interpretation. (it's not uncommon in RPGs to have a genderless or gender-neutral silent protagonist--link legendofzelda for example was allegedly specifically designed to look more androgenous when the games made the switch to 3d so that female players could project onto him just as easily as male ones.) In response to those debates, Toby fox, the writer and developer of undertale, clarified multiple times that frisk's pronouns are NOT up for interpretation; they are nonbinary and use exclusively they/them.

And then there's deltarune. kris, the protagonist and player-character, is, like frisk, a specifically nonbinary character. But they're also kind of a bait-and-switch silent protagonist. for the majority of the first chapter of the game, kris is presented to you, similarly to frisk, as a silent protagonist--a player-insert character who can be projected onto. HOWEVER. arguably the central point of deltarune, which the game spends the next 3 chapters making INCREDIBLY clear to you, is that kris is NOT actually a silent protagonist. kris is a fully-fledged character with their own wants and feelings and relationships and an entire personality, but when you as the player take control of them, you are explicitly robbing them of all agency. they become that emotionless, silent blank slate AGAINST THEIR WILL because you are forcing yourself on them.

despite this literally being The Entire Point Of The Game, people with no reading comprehension whatsoever have decided that kris's pronouns are up to their personal interpretation. Again, i need to stress how much the literal entire point of the game is that absolutely nothing about kris is up to player interpretation and in fact kris actively resents and in some cases literally tries to physically hurt the player for attempting to force them to act according to the player's will. For some reason these people do not think this applies to their pronouns. even though we had the exact same debate almost ten years ago about frisk and toby told us MULTIPLE TIMES what the correct answer is.

tldr these guys can't read and/or hate nonbinary people. that's really the long and short of it. And it's specifically he/him and not she/her because kris is weird and at times openly violent whereas Frisk was constantly getting she/her-ed because their story was about nonviolence and love, which people assumed were feminine traits. tldr for the tldr it's good old fashioned transphobia and misogyny with a healthy dose of dogshit reading comprehension. what else is new

guys i NEED you to understand that there is a different connotation to applying gendered pronouns to a character who canonically uses exclusively they/them as a headcanon than there is with canonically cisgender characters. you cannot just take a character who uses exclusively they/them pronouns and apply gendered pronouns to them because you feel like it. we do not get characters that use exclusively they/them in mainstream fiction. we just don't. you don't get to take that from us. this is not the same as a cis character whose gender you get to play with because there are no rules or whatever. You are deliberately misgendering a character whose gender and pronouns are constantly scapegoated and debated in real life. regardless of your intention you are contributing to the idea that they/them pronouns are optional and do not need to be respected. please think about the optics of what you are doing for the love of god

deltarune chapter 3 + 4 spoilers under the cut!!

if susie wants to be a box, she will.

the universe can scribble down all the tragic endings it likes. destiny can draft all the plans it pleases.

but if there's a spot next to susie where you belong, that's where you're going to be. prophecy be damned.

susie's never been one to confine herself to prescribed roles.

you really think she’s gonna start now?

doesn't matter who’s doing the talking - teacher, tyrant, time itself. if the call is for unquestioned submission, she’s already halfway out the door.

she can’t burn the pages, can’t erase the words or scrub out the subtext.

but she can drag her heels across every sacred line. love so fiercely the glass begins to fog. care so loudly the plot forgets its course.

the ending may be scheduled. might already be rounding the corner, actually. 

still, i believe susie can stall it. trip it up. make it stutter. doubt.

susie is resistance, knuckles white.

susie is hope, everything bright.

watch her grab hold of someone's despair and shake it until it rattles apart. 

watch her look at inevitability and laugh until it gets nervous. 

watch her plant her feet on ground that was supposed to give way and discover that some things are more stubborn than gravity.

the prophecy longed for order. dutifulness. clean lines. it wanted "heroes" who stuck to the script, who saved the world quietly, who knew their role and stayed in it.

and for the most part… that was ralsei.

the one who guides, who heals, who smiles no matter how much it hurts.

he's never asked for more than what the prophecy offered. never reached beyond his lines.

ralsei's lived his whole life like a beautifully penned footnote - important, but never central.

he believes being good means being useful.

he doesn’t ask. doesn’t want. doesn’t dream.

his room is empty... because no one ever told him he was allowed to want something just for himself.

his desire has always been to be needed, never to need.

he bakes for us. sings for us. sews for us.

keeps giving and giving and giving,

believing that is what earns him a place to stay.

but... susie doesn’t keep him around for what he offers. she does so simply because he is ralsei.

because conversations are more fun when he's in them, because someone's got to groan at his terrible attempts at sarcasm, because someone has to look him dead in the eyes and tell him he is real and can't be cast aside.

susie is hope. blinding, blistering hope.

every time she batters her way through the destined writ, her friends get another moment to exist and be by her side.

every bone she picks with fate is one more heartbeat they get to feel.

and that. that is all she needs. 

you don’t have to be chosen to choose. frankly, susie doesn’t give a single, solitary, shining blue fuck about what’s been foretold and decided for us. the second destiny tries to threaten those she loves - she’s already standing in its way.

this world seems hellbent on racing toward a single ending.

but if that’s where it ends up, it’ll only be because susie isn't letting it go anywhere else.

and if you spend enough time beside someone who refuses to stay in their lane.... you start wondering why you ever stayed in yours.

if susie wants to be a box, she will.

and soon... ralsei will too.
