What’s up DINGUSES, here’s the DEALIO.

I call myself a writer but I never write.

I was BORN IN THE NINETIES and all I know how to do is POP PILLS, LAY AROUND, EAT HOT CHIP and SLOWLY DECOMPOSE.

I have been working on my WIP about FAERIES and SHIT for EIGHT YEARS and I will probably NEVER FINISH IT.

I am a HUMAN WOMAN and I DO NOT POOP

and some day I will DISAPPEAR into the WOODS and you will NEVER see me AGAIN.

writing has gotten so hard for me. i feel like it used to be effortless. the words would flow onto the paper. i didn't write for a while and now that i'm trying to write again, i'm struggling. like i'll try to write stories but i won't like it because it's not as good as my past writing. i feel like i've regressed as a writer. i've gotten rusty. any advice?

i completely understand. the thing is, writing is a complex skill made up of a thousand smaller skills, and it requires consistent practice, or else it deteriorates. you’ve regressed because you’ve gone so long without writing. it’s not possible to keep up a steady stream of writing all the time— life gets in the way, or our brains do. we run out of time, run out of energy, passion, inspiration, self-confidence... there will always be periods of time like this. and when you feel rejuvenated and return to your craft, you will always feel like this. regressed. rusty. that’s okay.

writing is a skill that ebbs and flows depending on a million little things. it crumbles and you must build it up again, and each time, you will be a better writer than you were before. there’s an awkward phase in the middle, when everything you write turns out terrible and you’re lost. you feel like you’re not good at this anymore, and you may start to give up, but this is that crucial point in the cycle when you have to relearn old skills (which will sharpen your mastery over them) and pick up new skills (which will broaden your abilities and give you more to work with in the future). 

so yeah, for a while, as you play around and experiment, everything you write is going to turn out terrible. make that everyone else’s problem. it’s a temporary phase, and the only way out of it is through. your improvement is inevitable, but only if you keep writing, even if you hate everything you produce.
