A fact I think many highhorsers (which, love a high horse, love generalizations, love dramatic hyperbole, love a bit of godkilling ambition, do not let me stop you) have underrated is that the gods are not weighing Kill Their Siblings vs Kill Their Children. The “deaths” on menu are wildly different! One is an oblivion, a total absence of being, true death as promised even for a god. Meanwhile the other is fear, yes, and unspeakable pain, but then transmogrification. There’s an afterlife on tap for one group but not the other. If I had to choose between throwing my siblings into the black hole of nothingness that has terrorized us since we first learned what terror was…. or shifting a bunch of our beautiful creations messily from one state of existence to another—
I think I’d make the same choice. It’s not about who’s worth more, it’s that they’re two incomparable types of destruction.
#i dont think the gods are that blase about the death and the suffering they cause#but pelor and saranrae were so hesitant to destroy aeor bc they on some level recognize that death is on some level bad#but the prime deities are selfish and greedy and are destroying the world#if you cannot end the feud between yourselves and your family why are you involving the mortals#and thats kind of the contradiction that the lawbearer points out#if you made pact to protect your children then why arent you protecting them at all costs#if you cannot bear to destroy your siblings as they would to you why did you swear to protect your children#theyre not absolute on siding with either the mortals and honoring to protect them#if they considered death as simply shifting mortal lives from one state to another they would not have put up the divine gate#the divine gate stands as a testament to their guilt

You ever wonder if Vriska, having met Vrissy - knowing that she was raised in a comfortable home with loving parents where she never had to fight for survival, seeing how she turned out (bitchy but not a true threat), and knowing that they share literally the same DNA but only raised different... You ever wonder if Vriska is jealous of Vrissy?
I'm sure that the unpleasant reminder of how she could not be such a huge 8itch is also something she doesnt wanna think about. We've seen this twice over through (Vriska) and Vrissy - her potential to be less destructive.
But Vrissy gets to just... be that? No redemption arc required? Sure she's boring - the token mean girl in a high school drama - but she's arguably safer than Vriska ever was. And she's definitely safer than Vriska has ever been.

Tl;Dr
Homestuck in both canon and post canon have a remarkable throughline re:
John as a Person
Dirk as a Character
John consistently hyper aware of the narrative to the point of looping back to thinking only he could be real
Dirk consistently hyper aware of the narrative and embracing it to the point that he can only submerge himself further as a narrator
They give each other a reach around and deny everyone their personhood and agency
(Candy John is maybe improving but also maybe this is part of Ult Dirk's plan)
Anyways, I think they should kiss
My personal opinion is that John is kinda boring as a character - and wasnt that his whole point? average kid with an average life - loving father, suburban house, no tragic backstories just the folly of being a teenager
But if we sink into the verse and treat him as a person, he's almost believable. He was a fun guy (pre-canon), and then became horribly depressed and consequently awful (post-canon)... But like we've probably walked by a thousand Johns in the real world who maybe didnt become gods but who still treat the world like its not a part of them and theyre going through some shit that makes empathy real fucking hard - making them unpleasant to be with
John is a believable person
Dirk is a character - all the way to how he was Dave's Bro - this bigger than life figure. Who does all this crazy and cool shit - with all the irons in the fire, with all the sicknasty tricks, etc. etc.
Dirk always seemed to be framed as someone who could never be real. So he can't become a believable person and his whole journey to villainhood is just another way for him to run away from his own (for lack of a better term) humanity.
It all circles back to the idea that John is a loser because he's basically an everyguy. I could meet a guy like John on the street and think there goes another divorcee father at forty. but if Dirk walks down the street, you will always look twice - you will always watch. That's Dirk's whole deal
And a good long way that canon and post canon seems to fight is because Dirk thinks that people want a spectacle - they want the keyfabe - they want the wrestling match
But the spectacle works best as an opening gambit - it works best as a way to grab people, hook them in - people come for the spectacle
People stay for John. And Rose. And Dave. And Jade. And (insert favorite character here).
They want people to form parasocial relationships with so they can read and be changed however minutely - however infitisemally. We can't as a matter of fact feel things about characters as written without the double think of "oh for a second that felt real". And Homestuck's general navel gazing into the nature of fiction has utterly forgotten the most important question of all
Why do we tell stories?
#homestuck#dirkjohn#smarter people have talked a lot about narrative#im not adding anything new#but its kinda remarkable#i started with dirkjohn#and i ended up emotional about the art of storytelling#disclaimer#fiction ISNT real#disagreements over narrative interpretations are not personal attacks#dont prioritize the again PARASOCIAL relationship to a character over real people#i cant BELIEVE that needs saying#but you know....

The idea that Dirk and John both share a flash with "Rise Up" in the title...
But for John, his is "John. Rise up." Note: he - him - John, not his role but him as a person. And it's not formatted as a command. The WV/Mayor was grieving his windy boy. This was a plea. For John specifically.
And for Dirk, his is "Prince of Heart: Rise up." Note: it's not about Dirk, it's about his role that he has to play. It's about the stuff he has to put in motion. It's less about him and more of what he can do. And this one is formatted like a command.
I feel like the Always Sunny guy with my massive conspiracy board - like!! LIKE!!! Do you see what Im saying? Do you say what Im seeing???
#dirkjohn#for both these flashes mark the beginning#both for dirk hes putting his plans into motion#and for john hes just the next domino and the momentum has finally reached him#for dirk hes starting to really play the game#for john this was the beginning of the Bad Stuff#for both this marks the beginning of the game really becoming serious#equal and opposing forces#homestuck#for dirk this is the start of his plans#for john hes just the next domino piece and the momentum finally reached him

"Freedom brings all to ruin in time," Bane's champion once told him.
And it feels like a lifetime ago when she said that.
And maybe she was right.
And as FCG - Letters, Fresh Cut Grass, Faithful Care Giver - who was blessed with many names, graced with happy memories, and gifted a second chance at a life well loved... as this little aeormaton sees his fallen friends, he thinks that makes sense.
There is no code, no programming, no hardware strong enough to keep him from this. And that must be freedom. He refuses to believe otherwise.
Because given the choice, he would always choose them.

Wait. What does it mean if FCG can't come back - on a technical level not a narrative one?
Matt has to come up with a better reason for FCG not being able to come back. Because otherwise, is there an implication that FCG can't come back because he doesn't have a soul?
We know he has that.
Is it that his body was blown to pieces? Technically, you don't need a body to reincarnate.
What reason could Matthew give that would bar FCG from coming back to life while at the same time acknowleding that he must reside in the existence beyond death because he has a soul. (And at the same time say that even if they could technically ressurect him, they can't.)

420 days. FCG made it 420 real world days before blowing himself up.
We all knew it. I’m surprised he made it over a year really.

If anything, last night's episode is very much affirming my point that DnD or TTRPGs in general is very much not just a rules as written to play game
You very much have to play your GM as well
Haggling, bribing, or sweeping them away with hype can swing the GM in your favor
But! Player beware! For the GM, the game has always been the players. So they can balance out any bargain anyway they please

FRIDA shared a dream with someone on Ruidus?!?
When we met FRIDA, he talked about dreaming of a child that looked at Exandria from the outside? From below looking up? (Correct me if I'm wrong)
Did FRIDA connect with someone's mind on Ruidus? The way the Ruidus folk connect to Exandrian dreams? If so, what does that mean???
Do aeormatons dream of electric wookors?!?
And why did FRIDA connect but not FCG? Is it tied to FRIDA being one of the aeormatons tasked with protecting the god-killing machine?

they can do sending now bc part of the moon plan was to sick predathos on the gods
and to do that, they need to have the gods accessible
which means, ludinus cant have that pesky divine gate in the way
by chipping away at the gate, the leylines unfuck a little so sending happens
thats my theory at least

They went at least 100 feet straight through rock, and they got a party coming up behind them - Ashton turning Titan is absolutely the best way to get the backup party to the surface
He makes a free tunnel upwards. Eat the consequences. You gotta use your consumables, gamers. Especially if the tradeoff is that you give allies a free shortcut.
Also man, imagine if the Mighty Nien ended up following them....
