truly the thing that has most improved my mental wellbeing since my slow motion mental breakdown sophomore year was not actually improving my time management skills and getting more organized or any of those things that ive been bad at my entire life but instead just not glowing with incandescent self loathing and inadequacy because of it. like i still do a ton of shit at the last minute and forget to open important emails and my bedroom is a mess but im sooo much happier because at least i am not constantly stewing in overwhelming guilt because of it.

And since I also received my copy in the mail today, here’s my piece from the @gfhunklescalendar2017! I had the month of May, so I thought something to get people in the pre-summer vacation planning mood would be appropriate. Just aim for slightly better choices than these and you’re sure to have a blast.

I really wanna give it up right now for the set design for the Owl House, because it is truly remarkable and you can tell a lot of love went into it. And I’m not just talking about all the creepy parts where they play up the horrifying fantasy world angle. I mean the way each character’s values and personalities is reflected in their living space.

Like, let’s talk for a minute about this in the terms of Belos, Eda, and Lilith. We’ll start by comparing the Emperor’s Castle and the Owl House. At first glance both the Emperor’s Castle and the Owl House are situated in isolated areas, but that’s pretty much the only thing they have in common. The Emperor’s Castle is grand and intimidating. There’s a lot of beauty to it, but it’s cold and artificial, and the entire building and the way everything is situated in it is almost perfectly symmetrical all throughout, with the exception of the strange pipes we see which seem to serve as artery veins leading up to the heart being held in the Throne Room. This gives a fascinating visual impression of Belos’ obsession with control and order. There are so many shots where you can draw a line down the middle of the picture and the architecture is exactly mirrored on both the left and right sides. Some of the guards even salute with the wrong hand to further drive this home.

There is only one place where this visual symmetry is broken in a way that feels intentional, and that’s in the throne room. While most of the architecture and guards have the same symmetry here, the Owl Masked person standing directly on Belos’ right hand side has no reflection on the left. They’re a visual abnormality to the order we’ve seen displayed thus far.

Meanwhile, the Owl House goes to the exact opposite extreme. NOTHING is symmetrical on the Owl House, on the exterior or inside. The windows are all different sizes and in different placements. The roof is longer on one side than it is on the other. The tower is crumbling, and leans a bit to the side, and there’s at least three different brickworks going on for the exterior molding. The back of Eda’s couch is uneven, and neither of her side tables are from the same set, and the entire thing is mismatched and chaotic both inside and out. But because of that, the house feels lively and comforting and colorful, even with some of Eda’s horrifying array of knicknacks and odd collections. 

And then there’s the one shot we get of Lilith’s bedroom, which is an odd in between of the two. Lilith has bulletin boards and keep notes and lists that are clean, precise, and bullet pointed which reflects  Belos and his influence in her life, but her overall room is a state of chaos. Half her drawers are open with her clothes spilling out on the floor. Books and crumbled up pieces of paper. she keeps her sister’s wanted poster by her bed to take potshots at when she’s pissed. This drives home the point that Lilith is someone who wants to seem like the more organized and orderly Belos, but she can’t quite escape the same chaotic nature that Eda has embraced wholeheartedly. This is even something that’s reflected in her physical appearance as well, when you think about it. Controlling her hair and ditching her glasses wasn’t about a glow up as much as it was her trying to hide the things about her that kept her from fitting in, the exact opposite of Amity who dyes her natural hair a much bolder color so that she can stand out.

There’s also the fact that Belos, Eda, and Lilith all have images of themselves hanging on the wall, all of which seem to reflect that which they are most proud of. 

For Belos, this is his rule, and the subjugation of the Witches of the Boiling Isles, a sign of his power;

For Eda, it’s her wanted poster, a sign that she lives her life in defiance of those who want to control her or turn her into something she’s not, even if it makes life harder for her in the long run;

And for Lilith? It’s her graduation photo. This is very telling, since they could have made it something like the day she was promoted to Head the Emperor’s Coven instead. She’s the only one of the three who’s proudest moment is based in her past and who she used to be, rather than the person she’s become or the way she currently lives her life. It’s kind of a sad reminder that her happiest days are all behind her and her ambition has isolated her from the only person who ever brought her any real joy.
