Will didn't mature slower because of the trauma. He matured faster. He didn't want to play board games in the way that 12 year olds do, he wasn't 14 still acting 12. He wanted to play board games in the way that adults do when they miss home.

They were behind him. They were outgrowing being children. He was so far past it that he was reaching back for it again. They thought he was bringing yesterday into today, but he was really just nostalgic for what for him is now such distant past.

He didn't not outgrow childhood. He outgrew childhood then outgrew the teenage idea that adults need to leave childhood behind, all they were still outgrowing childhood. He didn't stay and was forced to leave. He was trying to return and couldn't.
